View Full Version : Hi. I'm a dad.

Saturday night, at 10:14 pm, I became a dad to Parker Penn Dickens. And that first name will catch your eye. The answer is, yes. But not directly.

In our lists of possible names, we created categories like sports, comics, literature, and so on. We also had a "bad name" list which included Voldemort Bismarck, Chewbacca Acapulco, and Flawless Victory. The name "Parker" won its division (comics) pretty easily, and it moved on to the finals and beat out "Alexander," from one of my wife's lists. For a while we couldn't decide between the two.

But then I started seeing "Parker" everywhere. Street names, authors, magazine bylines, company names, etc. The further we progressed in the pregnancy, the more it appeared. I joked that this was metaphysics: The closer we got to the time of his birth, the better reception we got on his broadcast signal.

But the clincher -- the lead-pipe lock cinch -- was in a recent comic. Ultimate Spider-Man 9, and this strip of panel:

I don't believe in signs. But I can take a hint.

His middle name is that of his uncle, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

We didn't think to Google the names together or we would have found Parker Pen, a company that's been around a long time. Even if we had, it would have only convinced us to use that name earlier. When I was told of Parker Pens, I did an image search and recognized one type immediately. My dad used that style of Parker Pen. I didn't know what type it was until now. Dad's been gone two years as of May. I wish he could have met his grandson.

We're well. We're rolling with the mercurial schedule, and we're happy.

He has my ears, and that's mindblowing.

Everytime we would get caught up over the potential nicknames and bad initial combinations, I'd refer to the Nic Cage SNL "Ass-wee-pay" sketch.

I wanted to name our soon-to-be son Parker, but my wife vetoed it.

For me my firstborn, who came along in October 2003, was named Logan. Obviously my wife knew where it came from (though Kurt Busiek once told me I could have fibbed and said I was really fond of the Canadian mountain of the same name) and agreed on the condition she could name our next child.

Son # 2 came along in Feb 2008 and she got to name him Hayden, a name she's liked ever since Craig T Nelson starred in Coach. I was fine with that obviously, but I always half jokingly told her if our next kid was another boy I would call him Peter Parker Nelson. She wasn't as thrilled with that idea as I was.

So our third and final child was born on April Fool's day this year. Early on we kind of liked the name Peyton, but surprisingly it was my wife who told me while she didn't like Peter for a first name she really liked Parker. This was good enough for me as I figured I'd take what I could get. :D

OK, Parker made the name list because of Spidey.

Greg!

How's it going?

He now only takes micronaps, and he wants to eat constantly. The pacifier works momentarily, as does the bottled milk. He's become a crankypants.

He howls, he flails, he soils himself, nothing makes him happy. Wait, that's me after I saw the changes to Wonder Woman.

Hmm. Maybe WillieLee was right.

I'm not as exhausted as I should be. Nor is Half-Pint. But we're eager to walk outside and escape the same old walls.
