View Full Version : Blinding pilots with lasers from the ground

(my father-in-law is a pilot for American, he was just telling me this)

Pilots flying (up to 3,000 feet in the air) have been getting blinded by green laser pointers which originate from the ground.

Pilots are urged to look away if they notice the green flashes, as they have been blinding the pilots for minutes at a time after exposure. He also mentioned that the people doing it are most likely just regular people who own green laser pointers and that it's almost impossible to catch them.

I'm curious if anyone else has heard about this.

(Just as a heads up, he said that if he and the co-pilot were both blinded he could still land the plane)

How are they able to hold them so steady on the pilot's eyes? Everytime I see someone using a laser pointer in a talk, it's all over the place. And that's from like 5 feet away.

It is only a split second of exposure and it blinds for minutes.

What about pilots being blinded by their own ardor?

It's in the news all the time. Some goofball with a cat toy aims it at an airplane, thinking they're funny. The feds show up pretty quick.

What? How the hell did they figure out it was him?

I could only imagine that they are getting turned in by others. If not, the government is recording us with satellites.

We used to have a club that would meet on weekends and do this. We would count how many flights coming out of the air port we could get to wobble off course. Good times.

That seems totally fucked to me.

It's more amazing that it works though, does the laser widen into some kind of wide beam or something? Or are people just super accurate or what?

I would imagine that the beam splits when it goes through laminated glass. It would be pretty crazy if someone could hit a point as small as an eye with a small laser at thousands of feet without some kind of optics.

That just shows you how highly I think of humanity in general, when I think something like that could be true. The drawbacks to being a cynic.

The solution is clear.

Remove the glass window from the cockpit.

For some reason I think I tried this once with a red laser. But never in a million years did I think it would reach it.

Sorry Mister Air-o-plane!
