I am sorta ranting about how big the signatures of artists sometimes are on cover art. Seems like there is a great importance applied to the impact/size of the names everyone who laid a hand on a the piece of art as if this is the fucking Sistine Chapel.
The example I'm giving shows that the sig is bigger than Spawn's head in a pinup in which he IS the single character. That to me is a no-no.

So, in that sense, I agree with you.
I don't have a problem with the size.
Just the importance put on it.
I actually like artists who are much more subtle, and hide their sig.
That's the ultimate end of the scale! Like a reneissance painter, I've forgotten who, who actually painted his name into the background of something.
Bill?

I think signature size is directly proportionate to the size of the artist's penis.
That’s, like, a science fact.

Ah okay I totally understand now. That bothers me a little when it gets out of control. But I really get pissed when the damn bar codes ruin a totally beautiful cover. Why the fuck don't they stick them in the back or inside cover?
As a side note, my roommates girlfriend (who doesn't read comics and thought DareDevil was a girl until yesterday) thinks the DD cover I have as my wallpaper is pretty.

If so, the size of it doesn't bother me too much. I can't really think of an example where the artist's sig was too big. However, like Mike H stated, there's too much importance placed on it, too much emphasis with the light color on the dark background. I like being able to see the signature of an artist, but I don't want it to take away from the art itself.

I much prefer the artist's signature being a more subtle element. It's not so much the size of the signature in the Spawn picture for me, it's the fact that it's like neon freakin' green and right in the middle of the bloody page. It immediatly draws the eye and ruins it....but then, it's Spawn so I'm not too distressed over it.
I think a lot of artists put too much stock in their little signature frame too but that's just a personal beef I suppose.

There's always Liefeld who puts more effort into a signature than a background.
I often neglect my backgrounds so I really shouldn't talk but...meh...

I've seen some fairly big ones that fade into some of the linework that made me go wow. But yeah - Big ones detract. That spawn picture - why is the little sig box right in spawn's crotch?
The only sig's I remember seeing recently were Terry and Rachel Dodson's. I love their work - but sometimes the signature is ill placed.

I see the one you're talking about AM, and you're right its bigger than his head and is way too prominent with all that white space behind it. It might not be that bad if there were larger details in the same amount of space, but like that it just destracts.

Oh wow. I didn't even see that one.

Damn, that's horribly blatant.
Yeah, you're completely right. The signature is just too much here, it's not even pretending to be part of the art or trying to blend in.
It's a bit much.
Then again, maybe it'll look different once the color is added.

It's sort of appropriate on Spawn, considering Todd McFarlane is the first guy I remember making his signature about 10 feet long on every cover...
