View Full Version : You Guys See Cap's Movie Costume Yet?...

For a World War II film, I kinda dig the look just as in The Ultimates #1. Though for Avengers proper, I love my wings.
Though I do like how the buckles make the red & white around the waist. Clever idea.
And I nerded out when the concept artist used some of my favorite Cap images...

It looks okay, if they were going to change the suit because it's a WWII movie, they should've gone all the way with the soldier thing and given him the Hitch design more fully, IMO. This looks like a compromise between soldier and and superhero, which is a little eh.
I wonder if the eventual modern suit'll have all the shiny from Bucky Cap's suit, though? That'd be hilarious to see in live action.

It's bland. It almost looks like a football uniform. Too much brown, not enough red. I kinda wish they'd just adapted it straight from Ultimate Cap, since they made it a good ways toward that mark anyway. I hate the shoulder pads.
And honestly, the "A" remains a pretty crappy piece of design work (sorry, Kirby). I loved Liefeld's eagle-emblem redesign from the '90s (but without the wings).
The utility belt is nice.

Again...I'd bet my bottom dollar that this IS the MODERN costume, not the war one!

You think the 1940s army would've designed a super soldier outfit in spandex, pirate boots and head wings? Simon and Kirby were not designing a functioning super soldier outfit, they were designing a superhero costume for a comic book. Function wasn't their priority. They wanted a striking costume that looked good on a page with an American flag painted on it. Costumes at that time were pulling inspiration from pulps and adventure novels and myths, etc., so they threw on some wings and pirate boots. They did a hell of a job with the design, no doubt, but its not disrespecting them to look at a super soldier uniform practically and favor function over flare. I've read Captain America since 1998. 12 years, and he's been my favorite character throughout. The design isn't perfect, but it's at least more plausible. That doesn't make the original costume design bad or goofy or whatever. It makes it impractical. I'm withholding judgment until I see the film, but so far, I think they're on the right track.
Simon & Kirby were both artists during WWII (the BIG one) and I believe that they both served in the military. They are the type of guys that that US war propaganda machine would have employed to design Cap's costume! I think Simon & Kirby knew just a lil' more about designing Captain America's costume than these producers.

my question, although unrelated is why do you always put the BIG one in brackets after saying WWII?
Because that's a term of endearment popularly used for our "greatest" war.

His suspenders are really bugging me, and yes, I'd like some stylized wings on the head. My gut reaction is I don't like it. The new Thor pics look okay to me, but for some reason the realism on this one irks. Maybe it's that I never liked Ultimate Cap.
We'll see. It's not a deal-killer, but it's definitely one I'm gonna need to see in action before it'll win me over.

They really should take some inspiration from the Captain America with a Burrito down his Pants... (http://www.wftv.com/news/12926707/detail.html#)
"This is definitely an unusual situation. We don't usually arrest people in costume," Frederiksen said.

I would like to see it go farther toward Ultimate Cap. The helmet is genius! He needs to have it in at least the first scene.

I'm saying it's obvious that folks who like this costume haven't read Cap prior to the Ultimates & probably have no idea that quite a lot of the elements that Ed Brubaker has used are derived from Roger Mackenzie & Sal Buscema's National Force storyline in the late 70s. Huh? What?
I like this costume.
It makes sense in a war setting.
And, I'm older than you and have been reading Cap longer so my Nerd Cock beats your Nerd Cock :)

Super-duper hot. I only hope it's the modern-day costume, and we get a proper tin-hat version for the WWII stuff, because I imagine the "helmet" in the mock-ups will be made of the same "metal" as Thor's sleeves. (Y'know: rubber.)

The main problem with this and the Thor pictures is that they are renderings taken completely out of context.
They look too clean, almost sterile.
We need to see them in action on film under proper lighting to really judge.

I was looking at the comments on the Thor costume pictures, this one caught my eye
Drew McWeeny of HitFix, who’s been to the Thor set and viewed Hemsworth’s final costume tests, confirms that what we’re seeing is the actual design, but cautions that “there are several details about it that are ill-served by those images.”
“For one thing, it does not appear to be made of vinyl or plastic when you see the costume in context and in motion,” he writes. “I’m surprised by how disco-shiny those photos make him look, because that’s not at all what it looks like in the film. There’s a real cloth and metal feel to all of the costuming, especially the Asgardian stuff.”
“Look, these images weren’t meant for public consumption,” McWeeny continues. “If you’re looking at these and thinking, ‘Oh, man, they got him totally wrong,’ relax. The world of Thor is big and rich and surprising, and I think once people actually see moving footage, they’re going to let go of any minor issues they have with button sizes or color palettes.”
Probably applies to the Cap pictures as well, it's not a good picture to judge from
For the wing crowd:

Try not to let a massive embolism pop in your brain.
IMO, it’s about as middle-of-the-road as you can get. Do I think they could’ve done better? Yes. Could it have been a lot worse? Yes.
I’d like to see the wings added to the helmet somehow, either by stenciling or some kind of raised motif. I think the gloves (and perhaps the boots) should be more red than brown. About the only think I flat out don’t like is the hexagons on the thighs. Otherwise, it looks like a near-futuristic soldier’s uniform, which is kinda what it should look like.

They're concept art. Nobody seems to get that. You can't be able to see the textures and weights at play, and they're not for public consumption.

I have been reading Marvel comics for the past 35 years and am a fan of the comic book Cap look but this is a movie about Cap in WW II. He is a soldier and his outfit should look like a soldiers, it needs to be practical. If they made him look exactly like he does in the comic book, everyone would think the movie was a complete joke. Well, everyone except for one person.

I think folks forget that the artists who designed Cap did so in the 1940s, so it's not that odd that he had pirate books & was colorful.
Exactly. Being the 40s buff that I am I always dress in pirate boots, it was the style at the time...

I can say this truthfully. My generation(15-25 year olds) are the ones that are going to make or break this movie. We are the ones that see it 10 times if we like it. and if someone throws me a gay colorful pirate on screen im going to think its fucking stupid as will all of my friends. And i assume thats how almost every other person in that generation will think. We didn't grow up with cap having wings and pirate boots. We grew up with the Ultimates, so thats what we want to see.

I'm jumpin on 30 pages in so I'm sure it's already been said, but that's great modern look for Cap. But this movie isn't set now so having it look modern is kinda stupid. I'm not saying it has to look exactly like it does on the page but it should look like something someone in 1940 woulda thought of.

Those were mostly low-budget affairs without a great deal of design work. The good news for you is that Hollywood's got too much hubris to not overhaul the designs from the comics, but let me tell ya, if they tried they could work up something a helluva lot better than the 70s TV movies people keep referencing.

from what we've heard, the movie will be set almost all in WW2, with just the ending being in modern times..
which begs the question, why would they release this as "the costume from the movie" if it only appears at the end?
I think the logical explanation is that this is the modern suit, yeah.. but I can easily see it being the WW2 USO suit or something. Especially if Howard Stark is involved as has been rumored.
