Report: Law & Order canceled after 20 years. (http://www.parade.com/celebrity/hollywood-wire/2010/05/14/report-law-and-order-canceled-after-20-years.html)
Although NBC has made no official announcement, the cast and crew of "Law & Order" reportedly were told Thursday night that the show has been canceled.
The series is wrapping up its 20th season, a tie with "Gunsmoke" for the longest-running drama in history. Insiders expected NBC to sign the series for at least one more season to set a record, but creator and executive producer Dick Wolf has reportedly asked for more money than the network wants to spend, according to the L.A. Times.
If NBC cancels the show, Wolf may offer it to TNT, which currently runs the series in syndication. But TNT has indicated it has not begun discussions about the show. "Law & Order has been a valuable programming asset for TNT," the network said in a statement. "Currently, we have multiple seasons under license, up to and including Season 20. With this series, TNT is the buyer and NBC is the seller. TNT is not in ongoing discussions about picking up the series for first-run episodes."
"Law & Order" has been averaging about 8 million viewers this season. In March, actressS. Epatha Merkerson, a mainstay of the drama, announced she was leaving the show. The Emmy-winning actress has played NYC police chief Anita Van Buren for the past 17 years.

I love that show.
:(
What other actors have played a character as long as Buren? Frasier was on TV for maybe 20 years? And Belzer's played Munch for a while.

I think Belzer is still playing Munch since he's on LOSVU and that show is doing much better in the ratings than LORegular.

I really lost interest in this show when Jerry Orbach left. I tried a few times to watch, Sam Waterson was still interesting, but once he went to full DA all the interesting characters were gone, unfortunately. It was like the team said "We know you're not going to like this new guy as much as the last one, so we're not going to try too hard."
But still, it was a good show. And 21 years is quite an achievement.

This was one of those shows that I would only watch usually in reruns when I had nothing else. They usually caught my attention, and stuck to an equation that anyone could easily pick up and watch at anytime...but there are many other alternatives...I won't miss it so much...now THE SHIELD and THE WIRE I do miss...terribly.

I thought it was *Doink* *Doink*?
That's what the actors kept saying during the commercials on the USA marathons.

I always went with "gung-gung."
This could be the makings of a totally useless poll to find out which is the dominant interpretation of that sound effect.

And it looks like it's now done.
After a flurry of last-minute talks, NBC has officially cancelled "Law & Order," concluding the show after 20 seasons.
The network has also renewed spinoff "SVU" and has ordered yet another series in the franchise, "Law & Order: Los Angeles."
A source close to the talks said discussions between the network and executive producer Dick Wolf ran late into Thursday, with NBC ultimately deciding to end the flagship "L&O" due to the cost of ordering another season of the ratings-challenged series and the strength of the network's new shows.

Constantly hearing about NBC's faith in it's new shows convinces me that all their new shows will suck.

Why do a Law & Order: Los Angeles instead of just moving the original to Los Angeles and not adding the subtitle?

Also, maybe I need to catch an episode of this.

Because that worked so well for SAVED BY THE BELL: THE COLLEGE YEARS.
But it's all about money. LAW & ORDER was becoming increasingly expensive to produce while the ratings were heading in the other direction.

Law and Order was about six months or so behind The Simpsons for the overall Prime Time record. If The Simpsons went off the air when L&O was still on, the latter would likely have surpassed it quickly.

Well then as long as we're bringing up records no one was talking about; Meet the Press will hold the record indefinitely!
Is Thriller still the highest selling record?
