First vinyl record: Billy Joel - An Innocent Man (I was 7 and bought it at Caldor with my allowance)

First cassette: Roxette - Look Sharp! (Columbia House!)

First CD: Billy Joel - The Stranger (CDs were expensive and this one was cheap. It came in a longbox!)

First MP3 download: REM - 20th Century Boys bootleg (I never found it in a record store, but I always wanted it. The first thing I downloaded when I had Napster!)

I still listen to ALL of them.

Mine was some Weird Al album, which I might find fun to listen to every now and again if I'd ever get around to getting digital versions of what I own on cassette tape.

The first album I ever bought with my own money, yes. I still listen to it on a regular basis (although it is no longer the ACTUAL copy I bought, as I had to buy it again)

Cast - All Change:

http://www.comparestoreprices.co.uk/images/ca/cast-all-change.jpg

I'd had albums before this that I had bought for me, and unsurprisingly, they don't get listened to anymore  Gems including the likes of Kris Kross - Totally Crossed Out and Snow - 12 Inches Of Snow. My early introductions to hip hop were very watered down as you can see!

Ha! One of my first vinyl albums was the Half-Speed Mastered version of The Stranger. And when I switched to cds, I got the Japan editions of most of Billy Joel's catalogue. I also still have the Japanese vinyl of An Innocent Man. :)

I still have the Innocent Man record, though it's pretty beat up.
Still have the Stranger CD too.
I don't think I have any retail cassettes any more...it was the worst format of all time. You lost the random access capability of vinyl and a ton of quality. Even those $6 a pop Memorex metal tape cassettes sucked.

Others' responses on this thread are making me feel really old.

First ones I ever bought with my own money were Wham! - Fantastic and the Miami Vice soundtrack.

Miami Vice not so much, but Wham!? Yeah, from time to time.

I'm actually listening to one of the first CDs I ever bought -- David Lee Roth -- right now. Started before reading this thread.

Oh, the metal tapes aged fantastic. I used Fuji, TDK, Denon, and Sony and they still sound the same as on the day they were recorded (at least twenty years ago or more). I still listen to them on my car radio.

The first album (cassette really) I ever owned was an Elvis Presley greatest hits collection. I can't even find an image or title to that one.

The first album I bought with my own money was either Barenaked Ladies' Stunt or The Offspring's Americana. I probably bought both at the same time.

I still love "One Week" after all these years.

Maybe 1/8 has been digitized(either on CD or MP3) and I listen to it randomly.

As for the first CD that I ever had/bought for myself-
Notorious B.I.G.-Ready To Die
