Poll forthcoming.

I'm of the school that defines Casablanca as "The perfect movie", and so it gets my vote here. I'm not sure that equals "greatest of all time" but for the purposes of this poll I'll support it's greatness.

Young Punk. I'm some clueless idiot that think that art, including film and music, is continuously evolving and that we're far from a point where we can go "yep, it never got any better than that right there."

Doesn't mean we don't come up with a lot of crap, too, though.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat. It's nigh impossible to call one movie the greatest movie of all time. Same as how it's impossible to have one greatest song, or TV show, etc.

Fair enough. So, what's the greatest movie made to date?

The Godfather, obviously.

I find it hard to define any movie as the greatest ever, for the simple fact that there are so many great movies in so many different styles and genres. The greatest comic book movie imo is The Dark Knight, and the greatest dramatic movie i've ever seen is The Shawshank Redemption. Greatest comedy ever is a toughie, i don't know that i could pick one. greatest animated movie imo is either The Incredibles or Up, both are perfect movies.

I voted the Godfather. Casablanca is a wonderful personal drama, and Lawrence is an amazing epic. But the Godfather is both is just the right amount of each in my opinion.

Young Punk. I don't believe that any of your geezer movies will be remembered as the greatest movie of all time. In fact I don't think we have seen the greatest movie of all time yet, and we will probably never live long enough to see it.

It is my assumtion that the greatest movie of all time will be created thousands of years from now in the future. Film making and video game will have merged and crossed over into eachother so that movie watching will become more of a experience. At some point programers/film makers will make the greatest movie of all time in which the auidence lives out a full a complete life of another human being. It will be so in depth that those that were already born will not be able to finish it, and those that are born will have to watch it from day one for them to understand it. This of course will lead to the downfall of man and the rise of a technological society that will leave earth in it's hibernated state where all we do is watch a movie for a life time.

...It's going to be that or maybe Police Academy 4. You know the one with David Spade as the skater kid and the Citizens who act like cops but don't get to be cops because they are a little more quirky then the originals. That's a fine peice of cinema.

No Citizen Kane?

Kane is certainly a great movie, and is inarguably the foundation for pretty much every movie that came after it. I see at as more of a vital evolutionary step rather than one of the top 3.

Godfather II trumps I.

But.. I'm of the mind that don't like to call any film the greatest of all time, I have my personal favorite, though.

Casablanca might be a good movie (I do not know, I have never watched it) but isn't it a little insulting to all other film makers to say that in the last 68 years you haven't made a better film than this?

Of the three I selected Godfather. But Godfather II was actually better than the first. It's one of those rare sequels that's even better than the first one.

I remember you mentioned in the "What are your top 25 movies of all time?" thread that you haven't seen a lot of movies on our lists. Do you have netflix? If not, you need to get it, and start going ape shit on some fine cinema. The kind of movies you've missed are the kind that make you happy that film exists. The kind of movies that actually make you feel like a better person for having seen them.

Have to go with Casablanca.

It has a little bit of everything that I look for in a movie and a bunch of quotable lines.

And to top it all off:

He let her go!

I dont think I've seen that.

If it's half as entertaining as SNL's alternate ending to It's a Wonderful Life, I'm sure it's pretty funny. :)

Andreas

It's pretty easy. Actresses.

Can you imagine Ingrid Bergman in Barb Wire...? Not really.

Now try to imagine Pamela Anderson in Casablanca. See! :)

I was not overly impressed the first time I saw it either. It one of those phenomena where something is great for no discernable reason.

Or that's just my opinion. ;)
