Let's keep it to domestic B.O.

My vote is Toy Story 3...I just think Shrek's moment has passed and Pixar has been on such a role recently that Toy Story 3 will get more repeat business. I also think you're more likely to get the 20-30 age range seeing Toy Story because they "grew up" with Buzz and Woody.

Thoughts?

Toy Story 3. I weigh it in terms of how many good movies we've had from the franchises. Toy Story is 2/2. Shrek is 1/3. Soooo... Toy Story wins IMO.

Toy Story 3.

Pixar's reputation is on the way up, while Shrek 3 left everyone really cold.

I'll be the odd man and say Shrek 4 just so someone is contrary. :D

(All seriousness I think Toy Story 3 will top out at around 250, with Shrek 4 surpassing it by 20 or so million.)

/looks forward to being wrong

Toy Story 3 by quite a fair margin.

You nailed it. I have friends that want to see a midnight, which I'm not sure will even happen for Toy Story 3.

TS3 has everything going for it.

No, I was agreeing with you. Damn, this is twice today I haven't been clear enough. Must be my paranoia while posting at work. It's rushing me.

All my friends want to see Toy Story 3 at midnight, but I'm not sure if Toy Story 3 will have a midnight showing.

I think Shrek 4 will make more money.

Toy Story 3...without a doubt. Its been 12 years or so since the last one, which was great.

Shrek will take a hard tumble this time. When a sequel comes out after an entry that faltered, the box office takes a dive.

You know, I actually thought the Shrek 4 trailer before Iron Man 2 (I saw both trailers for the first time then) was actually funnier.

I think Shrek, as all the Shreks have done better than the Toy Stories. Indeed, Shrek 3 did about $80m more than Toy Story 2 in the US, and almost did as well outside of the US as TS2 did total.

Toy Story II was also before the animation boom, and it was only the fourth major CGI cartoon release ever, I think.

Box office was also usually a good deal smaller on average.

I'll go with Toy Story 3. Pixar has a better reputation. Shrek 3 was pretty weak, and the box office reflected that, relative to Shrek 2.

Shrek 4 also seems less accessible to anyone new to the series, with a plot that depends heavily on knowing the events of the first three films.

Both movies will still make shitloads.

I hope Toy Story 3. Both of the previous films were instant classics. 2 is one of the sequels I actually classify as better than the original.

The first Shrek was a forgettable and dated, but entertaining enough genial shot at Disney when Disney was already making fun of itself. The second was awful. Didn't even bother with the third because I hated 2 so much.

But given how much the first three have made, I would be unsurprised if Shrek 4 outgrossed TS3. Disappointed, but unsurprised.
