View Full Version : THE BEATLES (White Album) – Make it a single album

Rafiennes

I know George Martin said he thought they could have had a great single album and that a double album was too much.

Was thinking about this the other day and I was wondering what would have been cut (a few things are obvious and a few others probably would have been cool, stand-alone singles)
So, there’s the challenge.
No more than 14 tracks, no less than 12.
Go for it

1) Back in the USSR (Lennon/McCartney)
2) Dear Prudence (Lennon/McCartney)
3) Glass Onion (Lennon/McCartney)
4) Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da (Lennon/McCartney)
5) Wild Honey Pie (Lennon/McCartney)
6) The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill (Lennon/McCartney)
7) While My Guitar Gently Weeps (Harrison)
8) Happiness is a Warm Gun (Lennon/McCartney)
9) Martha My Dear (Lennon/McCartney)
10) I'm So Tired (Lennon/McCartney)
11) Blackbird (Lennon/McCartney)
12) Piggies (Harrison)
13) Rocky Raccoon (Lennon/McCartney)
14) Don't Pass Me By (Starkey)
15) Why Don't We Do It In the Road? (Lennon/McCartney)
16) I Will (Lennon/McCartney)
17) Julia (Lennon/McCartney)

1) Birthday (Lennon/McCartney)
2) Yer Blues (Lennon/McCartney)
3) Mother Nature's Son (Lennon/McCartney)
4) Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey (Lennon/McCartney)
5) Sexy Sadie (Lennon/McCartney)
6) Helter Skelter (Lennon/McCartney)
7) Long, Long, Long (Harrison)
8) Revolution I (Lennon/McCartney)
9) Honey Pie (Lennon/McCartney)
10) Savoy Truffle (Harrison)
11) Cry Baby Cry (Lennon/McCartney)
12) Revolution 9 (Lennon/McCartney)
13) Good Night (Lennon/McCartney)

I didn't cut anything -- I haven't even finished trying to make this happen!
It's really tough..........that's what she said

Not possible. There are 30 songs here. And at least 10 are bonafide classics.

Given You can get rid of Revolution 9, but even it's unspeakable weirdness has some value.
I've been listening to the beatles a lot lately so I'm biased, but in their 8 years of albums, there are very few missteps.

Isn't it a bit odd to take a seminal piece of modern music and ask yourself, "How can I make this less compelling"?

I think you can make a really excellent single album from it but part of the fun of it is its sprawling nature.

No reason why they can't be used on the next album.

Or released as a non-album single.

I wish more artists did that these days.

Bit of a flow to it and the stuff that was cut would be amazing b-sides or great on another album.

And in the end...the tracks we take are equal to the tracks...we make...

Having not heard the White Album yet, I can still guess that Bob Dylan's The Basement Tapes probably needs this more.

The misfires and the experimental pieces are half of the charm! I wouldn't cut anything.

Are you kidding? The Basements don't need to be cut, they need to be expanded. There's a ton of amazing music that never made it to wide release.

I always thought it would be interesting to take their first post-breakup singles/albums and piece together the "last" Beatles album.

There was a music magazine a few years ago (I think it was UNCUT) and they did something like that, where they listed the essential post-break up tracks and then they put it in an order they deemed album-worthy.

I think the name of the 'album' was Everest.
