View Full Version : "All Black People" Asked to Leave S. Jersey Wal-Mart

Store is looking at security video to figure out who made the announcement
Wal-Mart officials are looking at security tapes after an announcement was made for "all black people'' to leave a store in South Jersey.
A man used the public-address system at the Route 42 store in Washington Township Sunday night and calmly announced: "Attention Wal-Mart customers: All black people leave the store now.''
Patricia Covington and Shelia Ellington were inside the store when it happened and told the Courier Post that customers and store employees looked stunned when they heard it.
"In 2010, I want to know why such statements are being made because it flies in the face of what we teach them [our kids] at home, and that's tolerance for people," said Ellington.
Ellington and other customers let store management and police know they were upset.
They asked the store to use the same announcement system to apologize to customers that night, which it did.
Wal-Mart management called the incident "unacceptable," and said it's working to make sure nothing like this happens at any other stores.
Washington Township police and the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office are investigating the incident as a possible bias crime.
"I can't believe it in this day and age," Covington told the paper. "Wal-Mart needs to be more responsible."
Covington and Elllington are boycotting the store.

I don't get it.
If someone abused the PA system, made an offensive announcement and Wal-Mart apologized is investigating and it wasn't an official announcement, why boycott?
I can understand them being offended, but it's not like it was store policy.

Sorta.
Take for instance, if I'm eating at a chain restaurant, and someone spits on my food. No one would find it odd for me to say, "I'll never eat at (blank) again!" due to that negative experience. Now, obviously it wasn't corporate policy for the employee to spit on the food, and the restaurant may apologize and take action against the employee. You probably still wouldn't eat there again. One bad experience is all it takes.

Honestly, I would find that odd. If the store is taking actions to meet your demands because you were wronged, it seems odd to me to harbor a grudge.
It would also seem odd to me if a non-store employee did it, as is possible here.
If you go to a chain store, and a random passerby spits on your food, and the manager came out apologized and they tried to find the person, but you publicly declared you were never eating their again, I would find it odd.
Now if wal-mart took no action, sure, I'd be all about boycotting the fuck out of them.

Well there's definitely a difference between boycotting a company and just deciding not to go to a specific store again. I'm not boycotting Taco Bell by not going to the store on east side, I'm just going to go to a better Taco Bell if I want some again.
I mean, by your example, would you never want to eat at any of the stores in that chain?

I would give them benefit of the doubt that the areas where this is happening probably doesn't have a lot of black people who would even buy one.
Last year, Wade posted a blog entry on another case where a black doll was apparently priced less than its white counterpart at an unidentified store. Wade said that when white dolls outsell black dolls, it's usually because black parents are more likely than white parents to buy their children dolls of a different race.
"Most white parents wouldn't think to buy a black doll for their child, even if they believe in equality and all those things," she said.

I was actually in the store when this happened. Swear to God.
Of course I didn't even notice when it happened. I was in a toy aisle with a 3 year old, kicking around a soccer ball and swinging around a NERF sword. Also, there was a really hot chick in the toy section, and I remember that much.
After it happened though, I saw this shocked look on the faces of a few people, so I says to Nancy (the person I was buying toys with) "What the Hell just happened?" So she says "You didn't hear that?"
Meanwhile I start seeing employees scrambling all around running towards the various PA system phones or whatever they're called. One of them overheard my brief conversation with Nancy and as she walks by says "that gives you an idea of the quality a' jackasses that shop at this place."
Figuring the employees were going to be busy I used this opportunity to start teaching the 3 year old about baseball and whacked a few dingers (using a NERF Bat & Ball of course) across the toy section. This lasted until I hit a ball into one of the hanging signs and it made a loud "DONG" noise, at which point I put down the bat, grabbed the 3 year old and proceeded to the Kids DVD section...
Anyway, this store is within 10 minutes of a large college campus with a reputation as a party school (albeit a small one) and it's regularly patronized by college fraternity members. Not 3 minutes before this shit went down I saw a pair of frat boys in the toy section, stoned as hell and playing around with the NERF swords as I was, 'cept they didn't have a 3 year old with 'em, they were stoned. I won't be surprised if one of those guys winds up being the culprits once they review the security tapes.
Oh, and some of the news outlets are reporting that there was a "crowd" of people that rushed to the Customer Service Desk after it all went down. It wasn't a crowd. There were four people at the Customer Service Desk.

Howdy neighbor. I didn't realize there was someone who lived near me here.
From what the news is saying they are several PA systems in the store that aren't near cameras so they don't have any suspects. Sounds like you might have the most credible lead though :) Sounds like the "angry crowd" consisted of the two women and their husbands that seem to be getting all the media attention.
Our little area is making the news a lot lately. Did you hear about that guy and his wife/girlfriend who broke in to cars at LA Fitness near the TGI Fridays and stole credit cards and went to the Target down the road and bought iPods? They've been doing smash and grabs all over and going to Targets and buying iPods. I saw it on NBC the other day.

http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local-beat/Arrest-Made-in-Wal-Mart-Intercom-Case-88704842.html
A man has been arrested for allegedly announcing a hateful message over a South Jersey Wal-Mart's intercom, police told NBC Philadelphia.
The unidentified man, who is from Atlantic County, N.J., was taken into custody Friday evening, police said.
Officials are staying tight-lipped on the arrest, but more details are expected to be released at a press conference Saturday.
Several shoppers have been boycotting the retailer since last Sunday when a man accessed the Washington Township, N.J. store's public address system and announced: "Attention Wal-Mart customers: All black people leave the store now."
The store immediately admonished the remarks and issued an apology to shoppers in the store and then through the media several days later.
In the wake of the incident, angry and offended customers lambasted the store for the ease at which someone could make a storewide page through several phones inside the store.
Wal-Mart said Friday that an internal investigation uncovered new evidence suggesting that a shopper may have made the page.
Washington Township Police and the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office have been investigating the case as a possible hate crime.
Authorities have previously said the person responsible could be charged with harassment and bias intimidation.

My point is that the easily offended waste a lot of energy. Anyone using police resources as if this is an actual hate crime, religious people protesting The DaVinci Code, that sort of thing... all those people burn through energy and resources that could be better used elsewhere for some real common good.
He thinks this is a real crime, or else he would not advocate jail time.

I appreciate you point of view, I just don't agree with it.
I appreciate yours, as well.
This seems more like some sort of disorderly conduct offense than anything. Definitely not a hate crime.
But there is the real risk that it could have turned into some kind of violent racial incident, if things went south. In a way, it's kind of like shouting fire in a crowded theater. That's why he should get the max - for disorderly conduct.
I like this line of thinking. You make good points.

Thing is, that's a pretty vague and blanket point to fall on because you can take anything, even people meeting for bridge nights once a week, and say that those people burn through energy and resources that could be better used elsewhere for some real common good. Anything. Even arguing on internet message boards. Instead of doing this we could be out volunteering at the local food bank right now.

Looks like it was a 16-year-old boy.
This kind of makes more sense now.

Slap the shit out of him for an hour or two.
Then we can move on.

Since he's a juvenile I doubt they'll release his picture.
But I wish they would so I could confirm whether or not he was one of the stoners that I'm fairly positive were behind it.

Yeah I would call this a misdemeanor and fine his ass.

Yeah, this could have easily turned into an ugly situation. If some violence had broken out and people got hurt and property had gotten damaged, then the douchebag should get charged with a felony and get a much harsher sentence.

Seriously, how would violence have started over this unless some offended party acted stupid and got violent first?

Kid was lucky he didn't get caught saying that nonsense. Though he deserved it.

The people acting stupid would be arrested and charged.
And the person who started it could be held liable for inciting a riot. Incitement is not protected speech under the first amendment.

This needs to be on Law & Order, but in the show, the kid is murdered after his remark.
Pretty much a non-issue. The "boycotters" are wasting their time and losing out on low everyday prices and in the process increasing their monthly shopping bills by upwards of 50 bucks a month.
Some dick thought he was being "funny" and made a dumbass comment. Whether a minor or adult, they should post his picture everywhere, just so everyone knows that he's a dick, though I'm sure most people he comes in contact with already know that fact.
