Former CBS News anchor Dan Rather, speaking on the GOP's expected strategy against Democrats in elections this fall, said Republicans would describe President Obama as "a nice person ... very articulate" but an ineffective leader who "couldn't sell watermelons if you gave him the state troopers to flag down the traffic."

Rather prefaced the comments, made Sunday on the "Chris Matthews Show," by saying, "The Republicans will make a case and a lot of independents will buy this argument."

Rather is known for his homespun anecdotes, though his choice of language in this instance already is raising some eyebrows on media blogs, which note the potential "racial minefield."

He is a homespun-aphorism machine. He is old. Thus, he shall be destroyed.

In Rather's defense, he mentioned neither fried chicken nor grape soda.

Oh yes, that ugly old stereotype about African Americans and their love of roadside agriculture commerce.

The fact that he will get shit about this is why I can't stand people on both sides of the fence.

Grape soda (or Grape Drink depending on where you from<see pic below>) is the next stereotype after kool-aid

There was an issue in Richmond a few years back where a small convienience store owner was called racist because all he stocked was grape and orange soda. He defended himself by saying, that was all he sold. I don't get it. Of course when I drink soda I drink Sunkist and my wife drinks Welches grape religiously. I just don't get it.

I'm not a fan of Dan Rather at all, but I don't think there's much significance to the word "watermelon" here, aside from being something that should be easy to sell.

Personally, I'm very suspicious of any roadside fruit vendor.

Technically Radar's drink of choice was not just grape soda, but Grape Nehi specifically.

I grew up drinking purple flavored kool aid and miss it sometimes.
