This week we're returning to Marvel with one of the most popular New Avengers, Power Man himself- Luke Cage.

Sweet Christmas, jive turkeys! I hope to see some modern superhero Avengers costumes for Luke, some updated 70's gear, some retro classics, and some totally new directions. There's a lot that can be done with Cage.

We're also kicking off a poll for the weeks ahead. We're gonna to pick who we want to work on in the future, based on suggestions from weeks past. This is not a straight election, more like an interest gauge for various characters to get the Club treatment and be redesigned. Also, as much as I'd love to everyone kick in a redesign- voting does not obligate you to contribute.

Also, if you have any suggestions for who you want to redesign, or who you want to see redesigned- please, feel free to PM me.

Thanks Dave.

There's a number on that list that I would go for, but, picked GG because it would be cool to hit him before the end of Siege.

I'll have my Luke Cage done later. :)

Which is cool if people are making requests. Have at it!

Luke Cage should be fun! I haven't participated in the last two, due to not having time. This week looks a little easier though. Hopefully I can get something done.

AS far as next week, I'm torn. I definitely would like to see a woman in this thread. I'm either voting for WW or Jewel. I've always dislike WW's costume and definitely have some ideas. Jewel just has one of the most non-descript boring costumes I've seen in a while. Either way, it would be cool to see what everyone comes up with.

And here he is in action:

As much as I love how Cage has risen to prominence in the Marvel U and has been modernized successfully, I feel like a lot of what is iconic about the character has been lost, visually. For better or for worse, yellow was his color so I brought that back. It's a color that's not that common in the superhero palette, but Cage makes it work. Also, his origin is that he got his powers in jail, his name is "Cage" and he wore chains. That's what made him who he was. So I brought that back. Now, I didn't want to give him a yellow silk shirt, so I updated it to a track jacket. I liked design-wise how something on his head looked but there's no way to justify a steel tiara. So, I changed it to a sweatband like NBA players wear. I think Cage should be fresh ta death, so I gave him Jordan Space Jams on his feet.

Dave and I were coming from the same direction, I see.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v311/thetravis/redesign/LukeCage.png?t=1268068442

Luke looks kind of silly with a costume, but I will cop to really loving his 70s Hero for Hire look. So I basically just adapted that color scheme to street wear. And since I've been playing a LOT of Marvel Ultimate Alliance, I replaced the chain belt with a big chain he could smack people with. :)

And, because I feel like it, Lucinda Cage.

Right on Dave - I'm with you on all fronts and your action pose is one of my favorite drawings of yours. Love the specific personality you brought to his face - not generic at all, feel like I know that dude.

The yellow and chains (post-racist re-appropriation?) are essential and the headband is a clever solution.

Love "Lucinda" Travis and chain-smacking, but not sure about a sleeveless hoodie. Feels a little like he should be "the black guy wearing yellow" in a music group for kids.

Kidding.. here's what I came up with..

http://newcomicreviews.com/bendisboard/mspaint/revamps/lukecage/CageRevamp.JPG

THOUGHTS:
I wanted Cage to have some facial hair. The full beard made him look too Mr. T-ish. I wanted to keep some of the yellow, but thought it should be relegated to highlights. I stumbled on a coloring effect and it turned out that I liked how the purple looked on him.

Anyways, the idea is something like Aquaman's shirt.. all purple-shimmery for the shirt. Maybe the effect you'd get if you wore a purple mesh tank top over a yellow undershirt? Or if you dressed like Prince

This all presumes Cage puts on a traditional looking costume. I kept away from the chains, "C" logos, headbands, etc.

Besides, I liked Richard Corbin's version :D I may try another one later.

NickT
03-08-2010, 12:48 PM
I haven't got anything for this week right now sorry. I like Cage basically how he is right now as a guy in regular clothes. Will have a think.

I decided yellow was fine, but I didn't like using blue for a proper hero costume. I tuned it down to a glossy black for the britches.

I thought he needed a logo with a bold, heavy font. Something to suggest strength and toughness. And then I went Adam Warren on it.

He should be known by a one long name: "Power Man" Luke Cage. It sounds like a fighter, and using his real name in conjunction with a nickname suggested a brand like a sports star. But only the kind of sports star that becomes an icon for advertisers. But in this case, Cage is advertising his own brand or philosophy. That's why I like the exclamation point in the chest block. It fills up the space between the P and L, and it conveys action and energy.

The chain stays. Period.

Keep the shirt, loose the collar. Also kept the arm bands and the chains. The pants would be dark blue, with regular black boots.

One thing Gregory, did DC's Mr. Terrific come to mind at all in designing this?

Wouldn't be a bad thing if he did but he uses a similar design theme.

I knew a black hero had text like this, but I didn't remember which one. It's too good an idea to not have been used before.

Not so much a redesign but a what if.

Very cool, Ron. The yellow silk shirt finally makes sense to me now! I like the 'fro too. I think the bald head with goatee look is a bit over used for black comic characters (even though I rock that look myself...).

And, because I feel like it, Lucinda Cage.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v311/thetravis/redesign/LucindaCage.png?t=1268068562

Period.

I've been sick all week. I've been struggling with this for the last couple of nights. My thing was, I wanted to see Luke in a more traditional superhero costume. The Superman thing was only half-joking. I figure he's risen up through the ranks, he's fought his way up into the pantheon over the last few years, and as much as regular clothes Luke is cool, he deserves a shot at a look as iconic as his contemporaries. Only I failed spectacularly to deliver one. :) It was gonna be kinda hokey. That's the point. But it was just problems, problems, problems. He doesn't need a mask because his identity's not a secret, so that's out. No cape, obviously. His traditional colors of yellow & blue aren't terribly unique in this application. I ended up with a metal belt that calls back to his old tiara and a stylized "P" on his chest. And yes, I know, he just looks like an X-Man in training. Oh, well. They can't all be winners...

Here's a somewhat more serious take on Mr. Luke Cage. Went with the boxer look because if he's bulletproof, he's probably going to want to save on clothes by wearing as little as possible, and he got a really good deal on boxing drawers. And picture him skipping and bouncing around with his dukes up, laughing maniacally as bullets ricochet off of his skin. Tell me that's not good comics.

Yay for software crashing :D

It's just as well.. I tried a redesign that looked like something out of an Azarello comic or GTA V..

Of course, he looked like Cobra Commander or Chamber.

Bare-chested, with metal bracelets and rings on his fingers. One or two visible tattoos, maybe the Iron Fist symbol (but then again, there's the bulletproof skin thing.. of course, there's always adamantium needles :D)

Regular Jeans.

Dark sunglasses. Just cause I liked the idea of this bulletproof guy not caring about his clothes, etc.. but mess with his sunglasses and he gets all Terminator on you. The visual of part of his sunglasses bring broke and this pissed off eyeball staring back at you. Complaining about having to buy another pair. Or stopping in the middle of a fight with someone way underclassed, holding them in the air above him as he looks for his glasses that he dropped.

I was about to add yellow highlights, either in the form of bandanas tied to his upper arm or designs on the shirt/cover.

Ah well.

Finally made a little bit of time to do this up. I actually like the street clothes approach to Cage, but I admit it only works because there aren't any muscular black guys in street clothes running around the Avengers.

My first thoughts went towards sports uniforms (Steelers - steel-like skin).I was actually thinking of being a smartass and just popping a NY Giants jersey on him with CAGE on the back. I was originally going to have his name on the wrist bands, but I was already wandering too close to many of the previous redesigns.

I mentioned this on deviantArt but felt it worth mentioning again that I think this is the best of all the redesigns. Not overly complicated. Very straight and simple, different enough from previous versions but very much in keeping with the essence of the character.

STREET CLOTHES
So, like just about everyone, I saw the challenge of Luke's costume as one of keeping to the basic idea of street clothes but, in my case, I really wanted to find a play up a superheroic element.

SUPERHERO/ SYMBOL
My thinking - with Jess getting back into the hero game maybe it's time to turn himself into a symbol. There is something powerful about looking like an ordinary dude and doing the hero thing, but I tried to take a cue from Mr.T and the power of turning yourself into a symbol to inspire others.

As such, it may be a little overt, but I thought of the broken chain as an evolution of an emblem. Oh, and I totally stole Gregory's "square C" design for the belt buckle. Love it!

I kept the yellow, because, fuck it, heroes wear primary colors and it identifies him. I'm also a huge Heroes for Hire fan and wanted a costume that would look sweet with Danny's newest duds.

BODY TYPE
Although I love how Stu and Lenil have rendered Cage as a rock hard shiny bulletproof MOFO, I just wanted to try something beefier to add a different body type to the roster.

I'm only OK on the final execution and worry that he looks a little like a metrosexual NY Sports Club trainer.

~R

I  this one. Very similar to what I have in mind, except that my idea had short sleeves, and where the black meets yellow on the chest comes to a point rather than straight across. Also, I was not clever enough to think about the chain design down the leg, mine was just a yellow stripe, like that of football pants. Great stuff man.

Like I said last week, there's no way I could redesign Cage and not have it be his 70's costume. So I came to a happy medium.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v325/blake4000/lcpm.jpg

Keep the shirt, loose the collar. Also kept the arm bands and the chains. The pants would be dark blue, with regular black boots.

Can I just say how delightful all of your drawings are?

The Chucks are funny and so Mr.T but I actually really like the shinguards Johnny did!!!

Makes him look like a modern-day Hercules!

Thanks for getting your collab on. You totally gave my design the finish it needed.

Thanks too Dave for pointing out the Kirby connection. I wasn't going for it initially but saw it as I went to color. I like the idea that every Marvel character has some Kirby in their DNA to tie them together.

Here tis - Kev Walker's Luke Cage sooperhero costume for Thunderbolts along with Jeff Parker's description... (I bolded my favorite part)

http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt268/hamgravy_photos/1271187249.jpg

Parker:

Though the hero for hire known as Luke Cage is already as hard as they come in the power department, Walker had to armor him up a bit with a new uniform and gauntlets, taking the "everyman" hero from Harlem into a more superheroic direction than he's had to occupy in recent "New Avengers" stories.

"He has some gear on that's specific for his job because he has to wrangle these criminals, and some of this allows him to move through the force field at the Raft prison and things like that. In the first issue, you'll start to see why he's wearing that. But also. we wanted him to have a uniform. We didn't want his costume to be 'He's the black guy.' [Laughs] We wanted to harken back with the belt and the arm bands a bit to his early days, but it's still not and out-and-out superhero costume like some people wear. It's still reserved, and a lot of the time he's still got his leather jacket on over it. But it's Luke Cage, so that jacket will get destroyed in almost every fight."

Basically this kid back in Luke's Heroes for Hire days hired him and looked up to him. The kid grew up and moved to Philly and started his own Heroes for Hire type company but gets put in the hospital by Hammerhead. Series isn't over yet but it would be cool if he would take over being a new Power man.
