View Full Version : How do you pronounce Ra's al Ghul?

In then animated series and the brave and bold cartoon they pronounce it "raysh", whereas in begins it's "razz".

I always said Raysh just because that was my first exposure to his name...is it really just a matter of preference?

Raysh.

That's how it was on BTAS, that's good enough for me. One movie's not gonna change that. :)

"raysh" is acceptable because "ra's" is just an alternate spelling of rais, which means "head" or "commander" in Arabic.

Raysh sounds stupid.

Well now that's just silly. The actual Arabic pronunciation is Raysh and the long-running tv show said it's Raysh. To say it's Rahz is like walking up to a scientist and saying the Earth's the center of the universe. You know it's not. It's been proven. The two sources saying it's Raysh far outweigh one movie that said it's Rahz. So get with the program. :)

So far we've got two people in this thread to say that Denny O'Niel says it's Rahz and two who say he said it's Raysh.

I think it's more like what killed the dinosaurs. Until recently at least. :)

Yeah so those two votes for each side cancel Denny out, leaving us to fall back on the Arabic + BTAS > BB.

I've always wondered this as well.

However I like the sound of Rahz. Far more regal and commanding.

Raysh sounds too much like race. And that makes me think "Whats this guy in a hurry for? He can live forever thanks to those pits he has."

So I thumb my nose to correct pronounciations and direct translations and I say Rahz!

Well, Ra's al Ghul is sometimes written Rā's al Ghūl, which points to a long a ([a:]) and a long u ([u:]). Now what do you make out of the " ' " in "Ra's," is it a glottal stop? And do you pronounce the "gh" like "g" or like "j"?

I'm pretty sure it's a hard G because our own word "ghoul" is derived from ghul (a monster of Arab folklore).

I can't remember who the interview was with or where I read or saw it, but it was around the time frame where Batman Begins came out. The interviewee said that when pronounced "raysh" it means (I wanna say) some kind of flower , while "rahs" means "head".

Again, the details are very sketchy right now but the implication always stayed with me.
