Yeah, I've run out of things to say about AVATAR, not to mention the enthusiasm to even talk about it. I'm sure someone else will come along with more to say about it.

Looks like Dark Knight will be #3 after this weekend.

And Titanic will be toast soon. I would've never imagined lightning could strike twice for Cameron, but after watching Avatar, I totally understand why it did.

Legion opened way higher than I thought it would.

The Blind Side just won't die... :D

Harrison Ford. Damn.

Meryl Streep's amazing streak continues. Another 100 million-grossing film. Nobody more deserving than her, imo.

Just under $48 million domestic, around $97 million worldwide. 2 more weeks and it should be #1.

The fact is Cameron made the only two films to make $1 billion in non-North American money. Return of the King is next and barely broke 75% of that.

Different thread but there's successful and then there's quality. No denying that Avatar is indeed one of the most successful movies of all time in terms of box office, and James Cameron once again proves he knows how to deliver ticket sales and deserves all the credit for that but the film itself is still not a high quality movie because James Cameron wrote a crappy screenplay.

I just have zero interest in seeing Avatar. I really hate CGI, especially when it's pervasive like in 300 or Sin City or those George Lucas movies that never happened. Occasional CGI is fine, but I'd rather do without entirely if possible.

I'm normally with you. I think most scifi movies that were made in the 80s looks more real than those that came out in the last two decades, and the use of CGI as a crutch and short cut to set design, animatronics, and makeup has ruined a lot of otherwise decent scifi movies. But Avatar really is something else entirely. It's a fantasy movie that does good on its promise to take you to another world, and the effects are altogether seamless, especially in 3D. I don't want every new scifi movie to try and copy what is here, but there's no denying the CGI worked effectively for this movie.

True. When I remember films like Van Helsing, and Phantom Menace, I realize how well CGI was used in Avatar. It was a brilliant, brilliant film.

In my opinion, the CGI and special affects are the reason to see the film, and see it on a big screen. It's quite a spectecular and breath taking visual display that should be seen. My issues with the film is the characterization, story and screenplay.

2/3rds of what makes it worthwhile is the 3D experience. I can't imagine it being nearly as impressive on a TV screen.

For the record, I liked it. It liked the film's message, and visually it was nothing short of amazing. The dialogue was almost painful, and the ending fizzled a bit, but all in all, I definitely enjoyed it.

It really is something amazing when you watch it on a big screen. Watching it on TV wont do the visuals any justice.

Same thing applies to paintings and statues. Best viewed in person compared to looking at them through pictures or a magazine.

actually, depending on the model and make, a headphone can replicate the same audio quality as a stereo system that would have to cost at least 100 times more money.

Ah, too bad, since if this was 1977, I guarantee you'd be confronted with the same argument vis-a-vis Star Wars, which, let's be perfectly frank, is not exactly Donald Trumbo or Paul Schrader or Orson Welles in terms of the screenplay.

I just saw it for the second time this week, and I have to say that the dialog didn't bother me at all during the second viewing. Most of it is just functional, segorney's delivery is a bit flat, but there wasn't a single line as bad as some of the clunkers in A New Hope or Xmen, nor was there a delivery as annoying as Bale's in the Dark Knight. It's not Mamet but thats not what the movie is all about.

On another note, there might be different threads but it is still the same universe. I mean, gravity works the same on every planet so far as scientists are able to determine.

Logic, facts and individual's belief system should pretty much remain constant. Unless, of course, they are just making shit up.

If a cheap, low quality $10 headphone can perform as good as a high quality, expensive headphone or stereo, I'd love to see it.

Sweet, so I haven't see the two highest grossing movies ever made!?! Awesome!

I actually tried to go see Avatar (in 3D!) last night with a friend, but I checked online over 2hrs before showtime and it was already sold out. I think I'm done with it. I wasn't that excited about it anyway, but I kept hearing about how "you have to see it in the theater in 3D!" so I figured I'd just do it. It was Saturday night, my wife's out of town, I had no plans...sure, why not? But it's been out for a month and I can't even get a ticket without planning hours and hours in advance?!? No thanks. I'm out.

that was precisely what I was referring to when I started my reply with "actually".

Again, there seems to be a lot of confusion on the board about how when given the quality versus cost/value set-up, and when one of the two variables changes, the other does not necessarily react consistently to the other.

That was my point.

I just saw it this morning. Cameron needs to spend less time writing & more time directing. The story was total shit. Just bad, but the world he created was amazing. Every scene with humans in it was painful to watch, every scene with the Na'vi, a joy.

Someone needs to turn the Dark Elf trilogy into a movie using these effects. I'd love to see the Underdark portrayed withe this level of detail.
