View Full Version : BB Review Group Voting Thread for 1/27

Ray G.
01-21-2010, 04:22 PM
Quick summary of what this thread is:

This thread is for everyone to determine what book we will review in the BB Review Thread. In the past we took turns picking a book but now we are openly voting for titles we would like to see reviewed. Everyone is welcome to participate, no need to ask.

After visiting the Midtown shipping list (or another one you prefer) and looking over the choices please nominate one book. At the end of the week (thread closes on Tuesday at 6pm EST) the title with the most votes wins. Feel free to lobby for your choice as much as you please :)

There are no restrictions on what you can nominate and vote. Any publisher (no matter how small) any price (singles, trades, hardcovers ect) and import titles are all fair game.

We will do a new thread every week to do these votes

Here's the list of what is shipping 1/27:

Time to pick next weeks book :)

Ultimate Enemy is my #1 book of the week, but...Bendis #1.

I'll go with The Atom and Hawkman #46, but Batman and Robin #7 also looks good.

I saw that Remember, the second manhua by Benjamin (Beijing based artist Benjamin Zhang Bin), ships this week. Here's an interview Paul Gravett did with him that showcases some art. Remember should be in full color (I've only seen the German edition so far).

Here's a video of him in Strasbourg.

I have no idea, everything that I think looks review worthy is an OGN or collection, and those never (unless written by BKV) win.

It is a huge week, but thankfully my buddy gets it, and we usually trade comics on Thursday for books the other did not read.

I am still a little lost after the last mini, but it is a decent enough universe that I am willing to keep reading on this one.

Y'know, I wouldn't mind so much if it was two books that haven't been reviewed in a long time/ ever, but this voting for EVERY FUCKING SINGLE issue of Morrison's B&R or ASS when he was on that and probably every single issue of his NEXT run, on top of the fact that we just reviewed ANOTHER of his comics in the last week or so is starting to really piss me the fuck off.

We get it guys, you like the book. Awesome! I'm glad you get so much from it. Take a bloody breath between story arcs at least for god sakes.

I'm sorry Andrew, I like you a ton so I hope you don't think I'm getting shitty with you or something, you're just the only person to reply back who does what I'm talking about.

This is a recurring theme. Votes or not this particular week, like clockwork, every month, "What's out today? Let's scroll through DC fir... BATMAN&ROBIN! BATMAN&ROBIN! BATMAN&ROBIN!!!". It's not just you, as I said, there are quite a few who do this. Every issue of All Star Supes that came out, we had people who voted the same. As far as I remember Final Crisis got votes every issue and half the people voting fucking hated the thing! I'm sure we'll have a few Joe the Barbarian votes till that's finished too.

I've actually grown to like a little more about Grant Morrison's writing in the last couple of years, to the point where I actually have thought about (and think I did with B&R) voting for a book of his once in a while. But seeing people vote for every single issue of his books, especially considering certain books I've seen that would've made great review threads get completely dismissed from being able to be picked for a review thread because they were the last issue of a run, or "We voted for that four months ago. Give something else a shot" is getting to be a little much.

I love Ennis and Brubaker, but I'm not going to vote for every single issue of The Boys or Captain America when they're released. Especially if I thought there was a chance they might win. The review threads seem to be floundering as of late as is, but add in a constant string of review threads to follow one particular series and we have the "Bendis Board Batman & Robin (and some comics in between, even some more written by GRANT MORRISON! WOOO!) Review Thread" and I honestly think that would be the nail in the coffin for these things. There's a B&R megathread already, people would be thinking why should they bother coming in here.

Again, I'm not singling you out here or anything. But you commented so I'm expanding on my point (also I'm having a REEEEEEEALLY shitty day, so I'm trying really hard not to sound shitty and may be failing. If so, I'm sorry).

No offense taken. And I do vote for B&R every time. And except for the first issue I didn't think there was a chance at hell it would win. No one else voted for it from 2-6. But like voting independent in the election I wanted to vote for my person choice, not necessarily the one that would win. This time though, there was sort of a legit reason to pick it as it's a new arc with a popular artist after a 2 month break.

And with all of these great books coming out this week from the big two and indies the thread was pretty much dead. Up until Pat came in to give B&R a second vote the leading vote getter was Astro City with what, 2 votes. No one was paying any attention to this thread, Pat gave B&R the second nom and I rallied to try and get it ahead because I think it will be the most deserving book to win with the least likely chance of any book to disappoint and it made the thread fun for awhile. There was smack talk. There was begging. There were shifts in votes. It was exciting, as a huge week like this should be.

Next month I'll vote for B&R 8 and I'll likely be the only one to do so. But if there is no interest from any other voters and the thread is dead and then all of a sudden another crazy guy like me gives it a 2nd vote and it wins with 2 votes that's not our fault for picking a book we like. It's the fault of those that didn't vote at all.

See, YOU voting for it doesn't bother me so much. You make it clear you love the book and that's your choice. It's the votes for it because "OMG! MORRISON IS OUT AGAIN!" that pretty much piss me off. It's not the book they're wanting to review, it's yet another Morrison comic they want to give a 10 to. And they'd do it again next week if he had a different book out.

And yeah, the lack of votes for other books don't help either, obviously. As I said a while ago, these threads seem to be dying pretty steadily. Or is it just me?

I think the problem is, the same stuff keeps winning recently, and it's mostly stuff that everyone already gets. So it's kinda hard to get excited about the same old same old week in and week out.

Seems like all review type threads aren't as popular as I think they should be on a COMIC BOOK message board.

Even when a Bendis book is stickied people tend to spend more time speculating about what comes next in the comic or story rather than what they liked or didn't like about the issue. But I'll keep reviewing and promoting review threads for as long as I'm able to log in

No, that's really not the case. In fact, last month we had a three-week stretch of Image and independent books winning. I think the problem is that after a stretch of really big launches, there just aren't that many great jumping-on points at the moment. It seems to come and go. Joe the Barbarian had a fairly healthy turnout last week, and I'm sure when Heroic Age and Brightest Day hit, those books will get big turnouts too.

THWIP!

I like the review threads. The best thing that happened was that we could participate whenever we want. I reviewed last week which was cool, but this week I'm out. I usually try to vote for shit I'm already buying or might have an interest in. Sure it sucks when the book I want to win doesn't win, but I've learned to not care. I'm just not a fan of the spamming or people who come in and vote for shit who aren't part of the regulars to make up review shit that they're not going to come back and review, that's what annoys me.

Seems like all review type threads aren't as popular as I think they should be on a COMIC BOOK message board.

Even when a Bendis book is stickied people tend to spend more time speculating about what comes next in the comic or story rather than what they liked or didn't like about the issue. But I'll keep reviewing and promoting review threads for as long as I'm able to log in
It is pretty strange how little people on a comic writers messageboard seem to care about actually reviewing comics.

What kind of changes would you like to see? What would get you excited again?

More people reviewing about books because they care about the books, like Andrew and some others here, and not just trying to wank certain creators by constantly giving them 9s and 10s in reviews because "OMG! It's Grant Morrison/ Alan Moore/ Warren Ellis/ whoever! It must be the bestestest comic EVAR!".

Most of the reviews I've seen here are less about giving actual critiques and more about seeing how far up a creators ass they can get their tongue so that they fit in with how certain other comic fans view and respect their opinions. Even when they (and the people they want to like them) know jack shit about what they're talking about.

I think he wants more Morrison books reviewed but I may be wrong
I'll Morrison you!

*shakes fist at Andrew*

I like the review threads. The best thing that happened was that we could participate whenever we want. I reviewed last week which was cool, but this week I'm out. I usually try to vote for shit I'm already buying or might have an interest in. Sure it sucks when the book I want to win doesn't win, but I've learned to not care. I'm just not a fan of the spamming or people who come in and vote for shit who aren't part of the regulars to make up review shit that they're not going to come back and review, that's what annoys me.

Thats also a frustrating thing to see.

What kind of changes would you like to see? What would get you excited again?I think Thud and Kirby would probably have some good insight here.

Agreed. I am not sure I vote and review enough to count as a regular.. But it is why I really like Ray's rule about actually doing the review if you want to continue to vote.
