John, this might be my favorite interview from the last year. I really enjoyed it. I loved hearing your "guilty pleasure" movies. I agree with you that Daredevil Director's Cut is definitely better than the theatrical release. I could have listened to another 3 hours of this interview easily.

Why do you think that Hollywood has such a difficult time getting the Punisher movie right? It seems like the most simple concept.

I'm not John, but for my 2 cents, I think they just keep trying to make a "comic book movie" out of a comic that wants to be a movie.
Just make a movie! Argh!
Sorry.

I see what you are saying. They can't get past the superhero comics to see that there are amazing books out there without superheroes. The Thomas Jane movie was my favorite, but what about Tampa Bay says dark or gritty? The movie definitely had its flaws. War Zone had the right look, but I hated everything about it beyond that. The awful mob stereotypes, the poor special effects, and less than average acting derailed it for me.

once again i'm not John but...
For my 2 cents i think it is the fact the Punisher is such a simple concept that we have seen before in film a million times, some loses family and acts out
now i'm not trying to undermine the character at all because of this i think its brilliant and suprised it took comics so long to do it on the basic human level.
problem is its had to break it down to a two hour film with out it becoming stereotypes and cliches and going beyond it could stray to far from the source
Punisher works in the comics because his ongoing and we see the character break through the outer shell over time. i actually think Frank is one of the characters that would work better as a TV show then trying for another film

I think Diabolik is great movie and not even in a ironic way. I love the Ennio Morricone score. that film had style.
hey John have you ever seen "The Hand" with Michael Caine? it's about a comicbook artist that loses his hand. it was written by Olive Stone and Barry Windsor Smith did the comic book artist's art.

i agree... i also know that in the case of the first film, what also got in the way was tons of money and tax breaks from miami, to shoot the film there versus getting no money to shoot in new york

I have to see that if only for Barry Windsor Smith's art. I'm such a fan of his work.

Very good discussion. Avoided Fanboy traps and really made me think about comics and fils. Thanks.

Very good discussion. It actually made me start listening to Matt Singers IFC News Podcast as well which is very enjoyable.
