I thought George W. Bush was supposed to be the stupid one who mispoke all the time. God bless you Donald Rumsfeld. In explaining why the many Guantanamo Bay detainees deserve to be held, without charges, for now more than 3 years, Rumsy said on Meet the Press:
"These are suicide bombers, these are murderers."

Now, I'm not saying there aren't bad peeps being detained, but how can you detain a suicide bomber? Doesn't the act itself negate the possibility?

Yes, I'm being a nit-picking liberal asshole, but you know, flip the situation and the Repubs would be doing far worse.

I think he means would-be suicide bombers.

Wasn't it Clinton who said that "is" bullshit? God, I miss when our politicians lied about sex, and not about atrocities.

I want to know how it is that Clinton almost got impeached and Bush has not?

Are you a suicide bomber if you intend on doing it? I think that's his angle.

It's unpatriotic, it supports terrorism, and it exposes you as the freedom hating liberal you are. Now stand still while I tar and feather you while simultaneously babtizing you into the chuch of the United States of Jesus.

Isn't that the issue though? If CNN did a story saying "Bob Dickerson is a suicide bomber" and not "an alleged suicide bomber" or had "allegedly attempted a suicide bombing," they could be sued. Rumsfeld's words are a lot more powerful than a journalists and should be held to as high as, if not a higher, standard than that. The point of the detainee controversy, aside from the questions of abuse, is that these people are being held for years with no attempt to prosecute, no due process and absolutely no policy for release or trial. The government needs show NO proof that someone is a "would-be suicide bomber."

Being a Jew, I always get a little cagey when the government creates a ghetto and just starts shoving people in there.

But the story would be that he is held as a suicide-bomber. I really don't think that the difference between him saying suicide-bomber or would-be suicide-bomber is that great.

So you're saying that if you were thinking about mudering someone, you should be held in prison and called a murderer?

I agree with you, one hundred percent. I'm simply pointing out that Rummy's words probably described what he meant to express pretty clearly.

If I think for myself, the terrorists have already won.

No, I'm saying that you're nitpicking over words. If he had said would be suicide bombers, this thread wouldn't be here. Considering what we're talking about, the missing of "would-be" is hardly the biggest issue here.

If I think for myself, the terrorists have already won.

Every now and then, I look up from my comics and my video games and begin to entertain the notion that the terrorists already have won.

Then I return to my escapism because reality is fucking depressing.

Well, other countries consider the US to be the worst terrorists in the world. And out leader declared "Mission Accomplished" in Iraq. So yeah, I guess the terrorists HAVE already won.

So you're saying that if you were thinking about mudering someone, you should be held in prison and called a murderer?

There's precedent:

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. -- A teenager was found guilty Tuesday of posting threats in an Internet chat room indicating he was planning a Columbine-style massacre at his suburban Detroit high school.

Andrew Osantowski, who turned 18 on Sunday, was convicted of two counts of threatening terrorism against students at Chippewa Valley High School. Each charge is punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
