I'll be passing on this film.

Maybe I'll see it on HBO or on DVD, but only if I'm with someone who really wants to see it.

Won't be seeing it.I don't know. Most people only see WWII era carriers up close. I am sure the modern ones are much bigger than those.

Length: 1,052 feet (321 m) overall, 990 feet (300 m) waterline Beam: 252 feet (77 m) extreme, 130 feet (40 m) waterline Height: 192 fteet from top of the mast to the waterline Draft: 36 feet (11 m) maximum, 37 feet (11 m) limit

The overall height of the White House (to the top of the roof) is 70 feet on the south and 60 feet 4 inches on the north; the façade (grade of lawn to parapet) is 60 feet on the south (lawn at 54 feet above sea level) and 50 feet 4 inches on the north.

The width of the carrier is just over four and a half times the height of the White House in reality.

They may have gone for accuracy.

I used the poster because it was pretty blatant, going out of his way to show destruction to the White House. The fake white house.

But he won't destroy a fake Muslim monument. It's the ONLY thing that makes it out alive.

Terrorists. Won.

It certainly didn't disappoint in terms of the spectacle, and that's why I went there. Some of those scenes were among the best disaster sequences ever put to screen. The Yellowstone one and the destruction of the White House were amazing.

But I just wish his screenwriters would put a tiny bit more effort into the "ordinary joe" storylines that go into these films. Independence Day did it pretty well, The Day After Tomorrow wasn't terrible, but this? Geez. The world is ending, and we're supposed to care about this shlub and his irritating kids? And then they nearly ended humanity. And don't even get me started on the dog.

Look, I'll keep on seeing these films as long as they're insanely spectacular like this one. But this was the first Emmerich movie where the terrible human interest subplots actually grated on me a bit.

Nah, its destruction was likely just left on-screen. It's not like we saw it at the end. We didn't see a lot of other monuments get destroyed either.

I think I read that he finds some sort of humor in "JFK returning to the White House". I find that rather twisted.

I will say that Danny Glover's line as he sees the aircraft carrier bearing down on the White House was probably the best scene in the movie that didn't involve Woody Harrelson.

If crazy survivalist dude lasted longer, this probably would have been four stars.

From Roger Ebert's review (3.5 stars, by the way):

When St. Peter's Basilica is destroyed, Leonardo's God and Adam are split apart just where their fingers touch (the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel having been moved into St. Peter's for the occasion).

I had free Tickets on Thursday and It was to bad, Typical disaster Film, but it had its moments, and there is alot of running away from stuff that gets kinda old, but over all not a bad flick. It was fun to say the least.

I was enjoying the SHIT out of this movie. The shots as the plane left Santa Monica Airport were INCREDIBLE. There were just many many parts in the movie I enjoyed on the spectacular level, and a few that I enjoyed in the story and character level too.

Then came the last 20 minutes of the movie.

I found it unfortunate that I wanted to see all three arks just get destroyed. I just stopped caring about every remaining human being. I think it was the moment when I realized that in this movie, I and everyone I cared about would have been dead a long time ago. I remember being happy that the people on Ark 3 were looking like they were going to die, and I blame the filmmakers for that one. As far as I'm concerned, EVERY civilian on those arks were personified by Yuri and his fat fuck kids (you remember: "We're going to live, and you're going to diiieee.")

Oh, some of the people on the arks were scientists and people picked based on genetics? All I saw was that one Dwight Schrute lookalike who was screaming like a bitch the whole time, and that older guy, whereas Satnam who had a family got to eat a wall of seawater in New Delhi.

As someone who I watched it with put it, it would have been a lot better if at least SOME of the people on the ark were placed by lottery or something. But they actually specify that they did not.

The Curtis family lost me when Gordon died in such a stupid and pointless way and no one gave a shit. Basically he was a plot hinderence and they got rid of him. Just have him survive and have HIM do the specifically-described-"SUICIDE MISSION" and at least look like a hero instead of a cuckold that had to die so that everyone could be a family again. Also, how about the Russian girlfriend's death for another pointless one? Two seals come up six feet from each other and the only section that fills up with water is the middle one? THAT again, I blame on convenient writing.

What was so bad for me was that I LOVED the movie for 2.5 hours. LOVED it. And then the last 20 minutes just made me mad.

This movie was ridiculous in a fun way. It had every hollywood/disaster movie cliche known to man, the one liners, the main hero has more luck than a leprechaun, no story, a dog makes it and lives (like ID4 and more), humor right before the shit hits the fan. It's everything people expected.

If you were expecting something more, you have issues.

Is the setup for the TV series clear?

yes.
