View Full Version : Anyone still buy Previews?

My friend is getting back into comics (huzzah!) and is asking me about buying the Previews catalog.
I'm torn about buying Previews. With online solicitations and my pull list of books I already enjoy, I can't seem to part with $5 for a catalog that I'll flip through once.
I'm rolling the dice with all those indie publishers that don't put up solicitations online. I could be missing out on good books by smaller publishers. But if there's an indie book worth checking out, most likely I'll read about it here.
Anyone still buy the catalog?

I buy Marvel previews. Sometimes I miss solicitations and the $1.25 mag is usually as entertaining as most my pulls (yes, I've even saved it for last).

my shop gives it to me for free, not sure why, maybe because he can't get rid of them

We sell it for cost at my store. No reason not to- it exists to generate sales, so why not make it easy to get? Because of that, we sell a decent number.

At the moment I still get the Previews from my store, but I consider going without it. The solicitations of the big publishers can be found on CBR or other magazine sites. With the online version of the order forms (http://previews.diamondcomics.com/public/default.asp?t=1&m=1&c=6&s=459&ai=0) you have at least the title/publisher information and should be able to find more information on 98% of indie comics online. As for the missing 0.2%, if you want to be on the safe side perhaps you can make a deal with the store to let you borrow a catalogue for a day or two.
Of course, there's always Thomas' thread that asks what you order from the new Previews and may point you to stuff you'd miss else. :)

Getting the order in late means you won't get the same discount on books. :surrend:

I do. I like to spend an hour with it and make sure I find some really cool looking stuff. It's worth the $5 to me to make sure I get my LCS order just perfect, and I don't miss out on something cool from a small press company. And my woman orders a lot of Manga based stuff, so it's convenient for her as well.

My shop does too but his reason is if you buy a certain amount (dollarwise) of comics then you can get it thrown in for free or at reduced cost at time of purchase. What i used to do is I would get my comics (usually around 40 to 50 bucks) and getthe previews guide at around $3 and get the Marvel preview for free
DCBS: Previews + Marvel Previews = $1.12

When I got it for free, it was great. But when my shop stopped giving it free to pull files, I didn't bother paying.

I read it in the store during my shift. If I ever get a grown-up's job, I'm uncertain as to whether I'll be dropping $4.50 to comb through the indie section (which is the only reason left to get it since I regularly visit at least 3 websites that throw up Marvel and DC's sections for the low, low price of free).

I love Previews. Always fun. I like to know what my favorite creators are doing, and I like to know what's coming out so I don't miss stuff. As a package customer, my retailer throws it in for free. I would pay for it if he didn't.
i also can grab it for free at my store.

Shouldn't they release this via iTunes, I'd have thought it would be a good candidate

Exactly. I even give it away at no cost to my regulars that spend a good amount each week.

I still buy it. I love diving through it every month, especially the smaller press stuff.
I go through it in the store for free. If I had it at home I'd probably spend just as much time going through it the one time and then it'd sit and collect dust.

The shop I went to in St Louis gave it to me for free to. I liked it, but I found I spent too much money on paraphanilia then comics, so I stopped buying it.

As I don't have a local comic store, it's my connection to the geek market.

I don't because I can find everything I need via DCBS or Heroes corner.

Same here. I spend enough time digging through the Heroes Corner website...if I had Previews (which I did get when HC offered it free or cheap one month) I'd waste even more time looking for stuff to spend my money on, but the website provides plenty!

Yea, the month HC gave it away for free was the last time I got one!
