I was contemplating buying a few new CDs this week when the thought occurred to me.
So which method more directly benefits the band?

It probably depends a lot on how the band distributes their CDs. I've got a friend who sells his music through both avenues. If I happen to talk to him in the next couple days, I'll ask him.

It depends on the contract they have with their record company. If it's a major label, chances are "neither".

Buy it from them at a show, that gets them the most.

If it's an independent band, and you are buying CD's from Amazon or CDBaby, they make almost the exact same as they would from itunes.
Buying the CD from the band's personal website, they could make more.
The best way to give a band your support is to buy merch at their live show.
All that aside, itunes makes small independent bands lots of money.

Yeah. I'm looking at major label bands. I was just wondering if there was a difference.

People still buy CD's?

In terms of actual margin, CD's obviously. There's more of a markup and therefore more profit. The problem is that iTunes sales tend to be more in volume. So, if you're talking about someone like me, who's relatively unknown, I probably make more in online sales than straight CD sales.
If we're just keeping the argument to iTunes vs. CD's, that's where I stand...

They will pry CDs from my cold, dead hands. I like physical media and the ability to rip lossless files.

You and I alone will survive the rise of the machines with our music collections intact.

What if its iTunes vs. CD's vs. Galactus?
