View Full Version : Twilight of the House of M

Well I just got through House of M #2 and is it just me or does this book bear a remarkable (if not amazing, uncanny, sensational, spectacular and astonishing even) resemblence to the old Alan Moore treatment Twilight of the Superheroes? (http://www.hoboes.com/html/Comics/Twilight/)For those not in the know Alan Moore wrote a treatment before his falling out with DC Comics that had the DC Universe superheroes split into major houses to protect territories in a world controlled by the metahumans. I won't get into the plot points of the treatment here just check out the link. Many aspects of this treatment have been used over the years at DC, most recently being Kingdom Come.
So I was quite surprised to find these similar plot points in House of M. I trust Bendis and enjoy everything he writes and that isn't me sucking up to his sarcastic ass. I wasn't even mad when he killed Hawkeye. Really. Honest.
I may be reaching here but I think it's fair to say there has been some influence by Twilight in this storyline. I look forward to see how this concept plays out in the Marvel Universe, but one wonders how Alan Moore feels about this since it takes little more that a sneeze in his general direction to get on his bad side for life (just kidding Alan). Did Alan give his blessing? I do know Brian is far to talented a writer to be swiping from the likes of Alan Moore, but knowing the strangeness that is Marvel I wouldn't put it past Joe Q. That piece of crap called Identity Disc was an obvious rip of the Usual Suspects (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114814/) and despite it being a great read, Daredevil: Redemption is definately based on the real life story of the West Memphis Three. (http://www.wm3.org/)
Basing material on real life events and media is nothing new. Warren Ellis has done this many times in brilliant fashion with Tokyo Storm Warning (a much better rendition of Neon Genesis Evangelion) and a short Hellblazer story whose title escapes me at the moment. But liberatinig plotlines or artwork, I'm looking at you Liefeld, has never been looked upon very fondly by this industry and has had negative impact on careers. Something I'd hate to see in the case of House of M. It's far to early in the books release to make an accurate comparison to Twilight but I hope Bendis at least acknowledges where the inspiration for this epic came from if nothing than to save him from being banned from afternoon tea with Mr. Moore.

Actually, Bendis & Alan Moore go to snake worshiping church together so I'm sure, even if this is true in the slightest, that they'll probably continue to be friends.

You almost say that like it's a bad thing. No one has ever denied that Redemption was directly inspired by the West Memphis Three case. In fact, Hine and Marvel have been using that as one of the major selling points of the series.

No, I don't think so at all. Nothing he says is rude.
But I don't really agree with him, becuase the themes he is talking about are pretty Universal.

He's skirting on troll. But not there. The politeness outways the sarcasm.

Are you kidding? So now anybody that offers an opinion that doesn't fall under the category of unquestioning worship of Bendis is a troll?

Wasn't the idea behind Millar's "Enemy of the State" originally an X-MEN storyline that Claremont had planned to do?

No kidding. Seems like it was rather thought out question rather than any troll kind of comments.

Hey Bendis, fuck you.
I come here every fucking day and I give my opinion. Positive, negative, whatever. And if you fucking take a minute to look, it's positive JUST as often as it is negative. I spend a shitload of my money on YOUR work, so I am entitled to my opinion on it, be it favorable or not.
If I'm a troll, then kindly kiss my ass before you ban it.

That's not true...Alan stopped joining Brian quite a while ago. Now Brian gets to worship my snake all by himself.

And no, I don't really think they are very similar at all, and I have read the Twilight treatment many times.

Yeah as far as saying certain stories or ideas are inspired by, or reintupretations of earlier ones, covers all artistic mediums, and all publishers, including DC.
Also, as RazorGod noted, its still early, but I think one thing that will make this story different than what he feels it might have been partly based on, is the Sentry. The more I think about it, this might end up being more about him than Wanda when its all said and done.
