ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Avast! Disney says a new "Pirates of the Caribbean" film is on yonder horizon.

Johnny Depp sailed onstage Thursday on a pirate ship in Anaheim, Calif., to help announce the forthcoming installment of Disney's blockbuster franchise.

Depp will reprise his role as Capt. Jack Sparrow in "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," slated for summer of 2011. It's the fourth in a series.

Chairman of Walt Disney Studios Richard Cook announced the news to about 5,000 fans on hand for D23, Disney's answer to Comic-Con. The first all-things-Disney convention runs through the weekend.

Really ? thats cool. I thought the series was done at 3....wonder if the other characters are gonna sign on or if it's just Jack Sparrow this time.

Could be cool if they make it Barbosa vs Sparrow or something, let the Will and Elizabeth story end.

Yeah, I remember hearing somewhere that the fourth one would just be Jack. elizabeth's and will's stories are done now. But Jack's is still wide open.

Everything that's been mentioned about PotC 4 since the third movie was released has said that neither Knightly or Bloom would be returning, to the best of my knowledge.

This won't upset me in the least, I must admit.

A full Sparrow movie without those cheesy/bad actors would be great.

I will. I'll definitely notice not having to stare at Twiggy and the Elf for half a movie.

Sweet. I had no problem with them hugely (Not a big Bloom fan, but he could be worse), but I'm a lot more interested in Barbosa's classic pirate and Captain Jack :)

Could be good. Really enjoyed the first one. Second was awful. Third was alright, but not anything I'd need to see again.

If Barbosa's in it, I'm there.

As bad as Pirates 3 sucked, they left things set up perfectly for a sequel. As long as they don't attempt any overwrought, multi-film epics like they did with the first sequels, they should be fine. The first movie worked because it was essentially a standalone adventure - that's the model they should have used for the sequels as well.

I actually love the second movie more than the rest, but I think they're all pretty special and I'm happy to see more!

I think it could have worked if they hadn't been making up the script as they went along. If you're going to do an epic with lots of mythology, it needs to be planned out ahead of time.

But you're right that I hope they don't plan this as the start of another trilogy, but as just a good movie that they could maybe follow up on with some more Jack Sparrow adventures. I hope they also make Jack the character from the first film instead of the insufferable prick that I was rooting to see eaten by the Kraken in number 2.

As long as it's the Jack Sparrow show (was starting to wisely swing in that direction in the last two anyway) this time around and Geoffrey Rush gets to be evil again instead of the weird alliance he was brought back for in World's End, I'm in.

Just got back from D23. It was pretty rad. Saw the Flashforward pilot. All the theme park stuff was awesome. Anyone in the area should go check it out over the weekend. They have this awesome robot dinosaur named Lucky that was so realistic. And radio controlled Wallll-EEEeee!

I AM GROOT!

Can't wait! Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow is pure gold.

My friend was there at that panel and he said it was incredible that after some footage, the lights went up only to reveal a giant pirates flag and Johnny Depp appeared as Jack Sparrow.

Wish I could've been there Friday :(

I'm checking it out Saturday to see what the hubbub is all about.

They're calling it On Stranger Tides? Do they have no fucking shame!??

I'm sure it'll be as bloated, nonsensical, and shitty as the rest of the movies in the series.
At least Depp will be in it as the likely sole point of light.
I guess this franchise is the money train that allows Depp to make good (or at least interesting) films and not work too hard. Can't blame him too much.

I saw your original post, so thanks for the answer.
That's interesting.

I understand if you'd rather not open that can of worms.

Powers' novel was one of the main inspirations for a series of video games. While the movie series is based on the theme park ride, the fourth instalment seems to be based on the novel's plot. Let's wait if the original writer will be compensated.

Remember when Hollywood used to make a nice film, then a bunch of shitty sequels?

Then in recent years, franchises like X-Men and Toy Story and Spider-Man developed better sequels than the original film?

Well, Pirates seems to be doing it the old way. A charming first film followed by two pieces of garbage. And now, another installment. Lovely.

I really don't understand why people don't love the second Pirates movie as much as I do.

Empire Strikes Back, Godfather II...

This is true. The "superior sequel" may trace all the way back to Bride of Frankenstein, in fact.

I guess I generalized because my kids always watch Ghostbusters II when its on cable and it makes me want to kill myself.

All of the franchises that have had superior sequels have also had terrible third films (Spider-Man 3, X-Men 3, Godfather 3, Return of the Jedi).

I really hope that Toy Story 3 bucks that trend.

I love the second movie!

My favorite aspect of it? Until the end, Barbossa was dead. I fucking hate that guy.

I thought ending it was World's End was a good idea, but I will watch a fourth one regardless. All three movies were great. :)

The only 3rd installments I can think of that weren't a let down are Army of Darkness and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. I'm sure there are others, but those are the only ones coming to mind.

Oh, and I actually enjoy Star Trek 3. Not as good as two, but not exactly a bad film.

I just got done watching the third movie for the first time (and I watched the second a couple of weeks ago), and I think they're all of pretty much equal quality (though I think II & III each could've been tightened up by about 1/2 hour each). I don't understand why people who loved the first one suddenly hated the second and third.

Johnny Depp and Geoffry Rush were the only people I cared about throughout the movies so yeah I'm fine without Knightly and Bloom.
