View Full Version : Secret Six is the BEST ongoing monthly series from DC

I challenge anyone to say that Secret Six is not the best ongoing series that DC has.
The artwork by Nicola Scott, who is very new yet highly skilled, has a new look while retaining the visual of a DC universe title circa the late 90s/ early 2000s. A time that was very good to DC. There simply isn't another DC title on the shelf that looks like Secret Six. Of the 13 issues to come out, I'm pretty sure Nicola has only had one fill in. That's significant.
The story is one of the only places on the shelf that still actively acknowledges the pre-Infinite Crisis DCU. When I saw what the hook of the first storyline was, I was shocked at the reference and the resurfacing concept. Absolutely crazy if you know your DC from the past, Secret Six is where you need to be.
And speaking of story, Gail Simone is completely out of control with the content. I don't know if anyone remembers how Preacher worked mechanically as this near perfect mix of compelling content, humor, strong characterization, and over-the-top sadism. Gail Simone is doing it here. I know that she is a capable writer, but she taps into some truly gruesome and at times uncomfortable places. No idea where it comes from. There have seriously been moments that have made me cringe in new ways. This book is unlike anything we've seen in Birds of Prey, Villains United and the previous Secret Six mini, or Wonder Woman.
Here at Acme preorders for Secret Six are consistently stronger than established titles like Wonder Woman, Outsiders, Superman, Action Comics, Superman/ Batman to name some of the big ones. Its one of the few DC titles that I currently read AND add to my collection. We sold out of a hefty 10 copy order of the first trade in less than a week and now have the trade and issues #8-12 on a prominent display close to the register. So get on your retailer to make this stuff available. This isn't a series to trade-wait on. It needs monthly support from you.
Read this book, thank me later!

"World's Tallest Midget"
An excellent series indeed.
But I'd say The Unwritten is DC's best monthly right now.
In fact Vertigo (plus Wildstorm's Ex Machina) is pissing all over the big two, IMO.

Secret Six is pretty good (and the only other DC monthly I buy), but it can't even touch Batman & Robin.
Scott's good, but she's no Quitely.

What you get from GL and what you get from Secret Six are two different feelings though. There's moments you get out of an issue of Six that you just don't get from GL, bottom line. The moments when Bane and Ragdoll talk the way they talk, the revelations (the card, the true nature of Jeanette). Just the way Wonder Woman was behaving in one of the recent issues, that's the real Wonder "why are you making me hurt you" Woman.
I failed on Captain Britain and MI 13, but I'm trying harder this time. This book is great and its my personal goal to see more people reading it and Agents of Atlas.

I don't know about the best, but it is a fantastic title, and it is consistently so.

I fully agree with Agents of Atlas.
Isn't it getting the axe though?

Scott's good, but she's no Quitely.
Frank Quitely is good, but I guess I'm no longer super excited about him on/ associated with a monthly ongoing.
Morrison is good with developing bizarre cases for team Gotham, but he's never excelled at the characterization piece of the pie. For me anyways.
By all means if you feel another title is better (for you or for new people) by all means break down what's good about it. Don't just say that Batman and Robin is better and then walk away from the computer. Tell me why so I can look at it again with new eyes. Or someone new can say "I gotta see that!"

Agents is getting a two part Vs the X-men mini, then its going to be involved with Incredible Hercules, and then it'll come back. And people need to be there for it.

So what?
Conversation? Yeah, we went ahead and killed that for ya.
I could ask you what moments those are so that we can all hear about them, but I'm going to try something new and not even ask.

Huh? I don't even read GL, and I actually like SS a lot more. I'm just trying to point out that your statement that SS is better because it does different things doesn't make much sense.

It's a great book.
But behind Green Lantern, Batman and well no comic comes close to Batman and Robin.

I'll say Batman and Robin is a great read, but I cannot give Frank Quitely the praise he seems to always get. Sure he draws with a great dynamic flair that can jump off the page. However, the guy just does not do a great job with figures. To me, Robin's neck cannot support the mass that is his head! Maybe there is something symbolic about that disproportion associating that with his ego, but it's a massive turn-off for me. To me, Batman and Robin is not even the best Bat-comic being put out now. That honor goes to Detective Comics and Batman is not even the main character!
Secret Six is probably the best comic DC releases that doesn't get the sales. It's a fun, almost unpredictable comic with fantastic art. Simone seems to know what to do with these characters and enjoys placing them in situations where you don't know if they will choose the right way or a sleazy, disturbed alternative.
Of the comics DC puts out, GL, Secret Six, and Detective are the best comics in my opinion.

Seriously, though there are so many good books out there that people simply are not aware of. We're so quick to talk about books that aren't getting it right (ie making sense/ being fully entertaining for the price) that I do like to speak up when something is going right. And generally, I think people are interested to know. Maybe some shops don't carry the book/ don't read or recommend the book, who knows. But I carry it and I promote the stuffing out of it.
But as such, I just don't have certain early issues (and I've traveled around and emailed other shops about the same issues). DC never did any kind of reprintings. So the way you can read it from me is the first trade and then issues #8-13.
If you are truly interested I think we might be able to work something out. I'll just have a favor with you. But I'll warn you, I sometimes ask the world. I recently asked Bendis to do that thing in the first Superman movie where he turns the Earth around backwards in time and I did it with a straight face.
Email me at jermaine@acmecomics.com and we'll talk.

I wonder if there really is someone out there that holds Lord Retail personally responsible for Captain Britain's cancellation. I imagine it's a lot like Gwen Stacy for Spider-Man, it's not true but every time this douchebag villain brings it up he falls into a fit of melodramatic guilt.

Based on the Eisner Nominated Lord Jermaine Retailer I have picked up Secret Six #2-5 to see if I should buy this series in serialized form or in trade, which obviously I missed the first trade somehow.
If I don't like it I'll expect Jermaine to take these issues off my hand for a sizable premium. :p

Let me (and Gail) know what you think! Compare your level of interest and engagement to the actual content (as opposed to anticipation of content) with other DC titles you may be reading.
