View Full Version : Wow I suck, I'm actually contemplating spending my entire Friday in a theater...

My nearest theater is playing three movies I desperately want to see this weekend. And while it's kind of sad, I think I might see all three in one day. It would only cost me $17.50.
Ponyo (morning) - $5.00 matinee
District 9 (afternoon) - $5.00 matinee
500 Days of Summer (evening) - $7.50
Sure I could spread them out over the next few weeks, but I have nothing to do on Friday and the theater is nearly an hour away so I'd save on gas money in the long run.
Should I do this?

I once saw two movies in a day at a cinema, a Martin Lawrence movie (One of his better ones :) ) and then Mystery Men.

When I was little, our local theater never kicked us out, so we would sit through the same movie twice in a row. I saw Rocky and Star Wars that way back in the mid-70s.

I've wanted to do something like this as well.
Of course, that was for Lord of the Rings. As much as I love those movies, that sounded crazy.

How come people will watch three DVDs consecutively and think nothing of it, but feel self-conscious if they watch three movies in a row in a theater? I say go for it, and enjoy focusing on the movies and the junk food.

Actually I might do the same thing. My choices are District 9, The Time Traveler's Wife, and Kaminey (Hindi film).

One time in high school, I did 6. It was a festival of classic Warner Bros movies. They a decade a day for a week. I made it to a good chunk of the weekday ones, but school didn't help. But the weekend ones, I saw all of the 80's and 90's screenings. Risky Business, Lethal Weapon, The Color Purple, Full Metal Jacket, Blade Runner, and Batman. The 90's day was only four, Driving Miss Daisy, JFK, The Fugitive, and Unforgiven.

I was considering seeing District 9 and sci-fi Notebook in one day this weekend. But I never end up feeling like seeing two movies in one day, even with the 10AM shows they have here.

I do this every year on my birthday. I take the day off, assuming there are three good movies out worth seeing, and spend the day. I time it out so I can fit in lunch and maybe a cigar between films. Sometimes people go with me, sometimes I go alone. But it's a good time. Definitely go for it.

What's wrong with that? I've quadruple featured before at the theater. Tomorrow I'm seeing Funny People and 500 Days of Summer. Only reason I'm not hanging around for District 9 midnight showing is that the fiancee wants me to wait and see it with her.

You've never been to a film festival have you?
I've seen 5 films in one day at the Toronto Film Festival and didn't even flinch.
In fact that same festival I did 21 films in 5 days.
For the Cleveland Film Festival one year I rammed down 22 films in 6 days and that's working full-time 4 of those days.
And the craziest film festival time, I did the ANn Arbor Film Festival where I did three straight days of of 4 hour blocks that are filled with short and full-length films. I drove down to Cleveland for the Cleveland Film Festival for two days and fit in six films. Went back to the Ann Arbor Film Festival for another 2 hour block on Sunday.
3 films in one day? Pffff. let me know when you want to get serious.

I have an unlimited cinema pass ( have had it for about 6 years) and I used to work a 4 day week.
On my extra off ( was tuesday then a friday) i used to go the cinema nearly every other week.
It cost me £10 a month at the start, now it's £14, but that covers every film.
I saw three films in one day a few times, I don't go as regulary now I'm on a 5 day week, but I must still be up on the amount of money I would have spent seeing those films.
Incidently the only film I ever walked out of (and I have seen some clunkers) was "sprirted away" not because it was bad, but I was tired and kept falling asleep, that is not a film you can understand if yopu miss large chunks of it....

What's Ponyo about?
Ponyo (崖の上のポニョ, Gake no Ue no Ponyo?, literally "Ponyo on the Cliff") is a 2008 Japanese animated film by Studio Ghibli, written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. It is Miyazaki's tenth film for Ghibli. The plot centers on a juvenile fish named Ponyo who wants to become a human girl. In pursuing her goal, she befriends a five-year-old human boy, Sōsuke.

I actually just double featured Ugly Truth and GI Joe yesterday. Sometimes you regret the decision, like after those two, but if you are actually going to see good movies it's definitely worth it.
I don't understand how people can sit down for longer than 1 movie... That just gets to be uncomfortable after awhile.

Just wanted to give you guys a heads up and say that I did indeed do this, and it was a good time.
Things to note about the experience:
- In all reality this wasn't that weird of an experience. It didn't feel like I spent that much time watching movies. I got there at 1:40 and left the theater for good at 9:15. I'd gladly do it again if there are ever three movies I want to see in one day.
- I saw probably 21 trailers but not one repeat over the course of the day. I was shocked by this. I did see the same commercials over and over. I hate this one particular Vault commercial so damn much.
- There are some laughably bad movies coming out in the near future (Gamer and Legion come to mind).
- I had no idea Toy Story 1 and 2 are being rereleased in theaters in 3D. Two great features for the price of one!
- I quickly ate Chick-fil-a between Ponyo and District 9. I got pretty sick during District 9 and thought I was going to poop myself. I went to Bestbuy between District 9 and 500 Days of Summer because Cheegy wanted to price printers. I contemplated buying Watchmen on Blu ray despite not liking that movie very much. I'm glad I opted against it.
- I saw the same people in multiple movies. I had no idea double features were so common.
- If you missed my post in the "last two movies you watched" thread. I thought Ponyo was below average. District 9 and 500 Days of Summer were great. I doubt either will be in my top ten of the year, but both were highly enjoyable. All three movies were fairly full as far as attendance goes. I was worried about seeing a G rated movie by myself in the afternoon, but the audience was mostly comprised of adults.
- An extremely dirty couple got into an argument while entering 500 Days of Summer. I don't remember the last time I saw someone yell at the top of their lungs in public. They were really fucked up and smelled horrible. They seemed to enjoy the movie though.
- The outing cost much more than I anticipated. Three movie tickets, two meals and gas. It ended up being just shy of fifty bucks, which totally sucks. I definitely could have put less gas in my tank and not ate that second meal though.

Worried is not the right word. I just didn't want to seem like some creepy weirdo. Thankfully it was mostly couples and anime geeks in the audience.

Seriously, you are too concerned about what others think. Be confident in your likes and dislikes and don't push off things because you can't find enough people to go as a group. You can't always find people to share your likes, so watch them yourself. Sure it's great to have those buddies to enjoy with afterwards, but I am at a movie theater for a me + theater experience, not to talk with people, at least not until after. I block everyone else out.
People don't think that much about people who walk into a theater by themselves to be honest.

I honestly don't give a shit what people think of me or my tastes. It's more of what I've experienced when out by myself. I honestly can't count how many times I've been called "fag" while walking home from work. It hasn't happened recently, but I've been in my (verbal not physical) altercations with stereotypical rednecks looking to start shit with me in the strangest places. Honestly guys it was a two second "Oh shit, I hope no one thinks I'm a pedophile" thought and nothing more. I was sweating or overly concerned about this.
Also I just thought this would be a fun thread. I wasn't really looking to you guys for advice if I should do this or not. I was more than likely going to go no matter how the poll turned out. I just wanted to see if others had done it before.
