View Full Version : Grant Morrison wants to do All-Star style Wonder Woman

Did a search, didn't find this posted.
Avclub.com posted an interview with Grant Morrison today. It was pretty interesting, but the part that I found most interesting was this:
"Wonder Woman is the one I want to get to work with next. I’ve become fascinated by all the contradictions and complexities in the character over the years, and would love to do an All-Star Superman-style take that would clarify and redefine what she stands for, and what she’s capable of as a character."
You can read the whole interview here (http://www.avclub.com/articles/grant-morrison,30678/).

Hmm.
Yeah, I'm all over this, should it happen. I think Morrison would have a lot of interesting ideas to bring to the character of Wonder Woman.

Yeah, that would've been awesome. But iirc, Cooke only wanted to write it and J Bone was going to draw it and that was a big reason DC passed.

Cooke didn't want to do All Star WW. That's still being worked on by AH!
Cooke wanted to do an all-ages Wonder Woman book. The feeling I got at the time was that DC didn't feel there would really be a market for it. After all, the main title is only in the 30k+ orders/month range.

The Adam Hughes one is still a go last I heard. A hand injury has delayed it, but I think he's back drawing it now. I'd heard it said Hughes made sure DC wouldn't solicit the mini-series until it was all complete by drawing the first issue last.

I'd rather see the AH! Wonder Woman series, but the Morrison version sounds like it'd be interesting, I suppose.
Darwyn Cooke's all-ages WW? I want it.

Yeah, where is Adam Hughes' All-Star Wonder Woman?
As someone said, he had some kind of hand injury. I think he also got busy with some other work, and obviously ASWW can wait, since it is in its own little world.
It's still on, though, as far as I know.

Not really a major Wonder Woman fan (nothing against her, I've just yet to read anything that's captivated me) but all three of those projects (Hughs, Morrison and Cooke) all sound like excellent books that I would love to read. Guess I'll get one of them at least.
Hell, Morrison should just All-Star style every major character in the DC universe. All-Star Green Lantern, All-Star Flash. This could be a classic line.
Let's see ... my favorite writer, my favorite character.
Hmm.

I thought that was Supergirl.

They certainly need to do something to keep the brand going. They did one really good series and one half-completed series of crap, and we haven't seen anything All-Star in a while.

How about Miller's sperm bank WW? now that'd be AWESOME!!! (kidding)

I truly hope that if that was the case, Morrison never gets the gig. Call me crazy, but besides all the kickass stuff that Diana represents, I like my Wonder Women to look somewhat pretty.

That reminds me of that WW cover Quitely did. She didn't look like a favored daughter of Aphrodite...

That's a sweet cover. And I love Quitely. But I don't think he'd be right for this. I don't want a "pretty drawings" artist like Greg Land either. But just someone who can make WW look more aesthetically pleasing. This is not a knock on Quitely. I've loved everything of his that I've read, from way back when he was doing Invisibles issues. I just find his women to not be all that pretty, which Diana definitely needs to be.
This sounds like it could be either the best thing or worst thing ever.
I am very intrigued.

I totally respect if people love Quietly and his aesthetic sensibility, but to me that's just plain ugly...my opinion, not a knock on the guy or his fans, of course.
I certainly don't want an All Star WW by Land and his creepy PhotoPornFaces, but I definitely want an artist that conveys the "as beautiful as Aphrodite" part of the character...

I was just talking with a buddy about how I've never read a Wonder Woman comic that I genuinely loved, which is ridiculous since she's such an icon. She's appeared in good stories, but her own title has never once kept my interest. Knowing Morrison, and knowing I like 99% of everything I've read by him, this could finally change.

Heh. Not really. I was very excited about Supergirl starting off, when her ad was in every book when I was first starting to read comics.
But Wondy is by far favorite character. And I don't even read Supergirl anymore.

Just pair him with someone like Ryan Sook (A guy DC's had under contract for a long while without giving him any substantial assignment) or José Luis García Lopez and get it started already!!!

This is an attitude I've never really understood. In art is beauty. And yes, sometimes beauty includes sexuality.
Diana is gifted by the gods, one of whom is Aphrodite. She is given the beauty of Aphrodite.
Now, I may not be an art historian, but I've seen a hell of a lot of paintings and sculptures of Aphrodite/Venus in Italy and France. And they are almost all attempts at capturing the beauty of the female form, in a state of perfection.
Sure, there are little examples of the artist playing with things. Like, the painting of Venus and Mars, after having sex, and the look of exasperation on Venus' face.
But the underlying idea is: Let's portray this figure as beautifully and as perfectly as we can.
If superheroes are modern mythological figures, shouldn't they be treated the same way?

Only if the artist doesn't tell a story. I don't care how "cheesecake" the female form is drawn as long as the the artist is telling a good story with the art.

If we're talking Greg Land tracing porn shots, sure.
But if we're talking real artists, then making her look hot is what he's SUPPOSED to do! Look at the Power Girl, and Amanda Conner's artwork. PG is smokin' hot. But she's also hilarious with her expressions and body language.
I bet a lot of people would call Conner's art in Power Girl "cheesecake." But I call it simply fun, excellent artwork.

Cooke wanted to do an all-ages Wonder Woman book. The feeling I got at the time was that DC didn't feel there would really be a market for it. After all, the main title is only in the 30k+ orders/month range.
There's something screwy with the whole comics market-to-kids thing. My daughter saw some Wonder Woman comic covers in a book I have and immediately wanted to read stories about her. I bought her the Showcase collection (stuff from the 60's) and she's reading those. But they are pretty dated storylines.
Same thing happened with the Divas cover. She was all over it. Who are these characters? What do they do? What are their powers?
