I believe in the template of the perfect song: a piece of music with lyrics that states its premise, builds on it, has a masterful chorus, and ends without superfluous clutter. It has a message, states it in a catchy efficient way, and closes.
I think there are examples from throughout the decades, including songs by the Beatles, Stones and Beach Boys. But I'm beginning to think the apex is the Police's "Every Breath You Take."
