This is a little comic project I've been working on for the past few months.

It's a little suspense story with a sci-fi background...and anthros.

No text dropped in yet, but several of these pages are silent anyway, and I hope the picture convey enough to get the general idea of the story.

All pages archived here: http://benjamin-the-fox.deviantart.com/gallery/#The-Shuttered-City-Comic-Inkwashed

Edit 10/27/09: I just finished the cover, gonna post it at the start of this post, even though it was the last piece I've done.

I'd be elated if I wasn't so beat up and exhausted. Mainly I'm just relieved.

Now I gotta drop in the text and come up with a cover, then start submitting this crazy thing to some publishers. For the future availability of this comic, keep watching this thread.

And now, without further ado. the last page:

Well Boys and Girls, I've made my little mad project available as a e-book on Lulu.com for the time being, pending any more professional distribution methods.

It's available as a print-quality PDF (300 DPI) at the following address.

http://stores.lulu.com/store.php?fStoreID=2634740&f

There are no protections on the file, so you can do as you will with it and are at no risk of not being able to access it, but, please don't distribute it for free, I worked hard on this.

Hopefully I'll have a more professional distribution channel some time in the next few months, but I just wanted it to be available in some form to the general public.

Thanks for all your support guys. Oh, and Arion and Andreas, you guys get one for free. Just drop me a note on how you want it sent to you.

These are the pages I've inked the linework for but haven't yet gotten to ink-washing. They really don't look finished in this stated because so much is carried by the shading.

Wow, Thank you very much. I think all of the landscape shots I had to make two attempts on, because I blew it in some way or another the first time. Ink does not forgive those who rush in blindly. But slowly I feel like I'm getting into a groove with this project, and I really hope I can garner some interest from a publisher, cuz I don't know how much longer I can stand my day job...

I feel your pain regarding the day job.

And, yeah, to my eye, the art definitely tightens and becomes more confident as the pages progress. There's growth there.

Really impressive work, man! Best of luck to you.

I really like those. The characters are really nice. Page 8 (I think) is the freshest one. I also like page 4 with the city in the background. My only problem with this page is that the panel composition looks a little wonky and the way the rabbit has no feet in the bottom middle, it looks like you just extended the legs to the bottom to avoid the feet. If you can try and make the top panel bigger then figure out a way to not make the panels so elongated. But I really dig the environment you set up and I can tell you really enjoy drawing the rabbit.

Yeah I don't know why I'm so inclined to chop off his feet. I'm not doing it on purpose, I swear. I'm gonna have to be careful about that in the future.

And yeah, Leland is fun to draw, but I've been drawing him so long, and it's still a challenge to get him on model. The other characters...ooh boy, I'm gonna have to work extra hard to make sure they look right...

Well, got a letter back from the publisher. He seemed to think it had some merit, but he ain't publishing it, at least not now. So... yeah. Is this the part where I sink into a morass of self-pity for a few weeks? :surrend:

Well, I hope not. I'm gonna be setting up a website soon, and trying to set up some kind of on-line thing, so hopefully that'll keep me busy at least for a while.

In the meantime, I'll continue posting updates to this thread as I add on to my project. Thanks for the support and kind words, guys!

Don't be too discouraged. This doesn't seem to me like the type of project that Top Shelf would usually publish (although it's hard to tell without dialogue, I suppose). Hopefully you at least got some useful feedback.

This is really impressive. I like how each of the panels captures an emotion.

Perhaps send a submission packet to Arthur A. Levine Books. They publish Shaun Tan's books, and perhaps it'll open a door.

I remember a couple of years ago when an editor rejected my book... he was very direct and he told me what I was doing wrong. Although I didn't agree with him 100% he did make a lot of very valid critics.

It's hard to tell with Top Shelf sometimes. Like, 4 years ago I would definitely not thought about to submitting to them, but they seem to be branching out into other genres, so I figured it was worth a shot.

Hey now that's a thought. I've got The Arrival sitting on my table here, and I really like Shaun Tan's stuff, so I really appreciate that you think my stuff merits being sent to the same publisher. Thank you.

...he was very direct and he told me what I was doing wrong...he did make a lot of very valid critics.

I didn't really get any critiques in the reply, just some advice about what I could do if I couldn't find a publisher, although he said he was too busy to go into detail. But he did seem pretty positive about the overall project, and it was nice to read some encouraging words from an editor.

Anyway, I don't know exactly what I'm gonna do next, but whatever it is, you'll hear about it here, and I'm hoping to have some new artwork up this week. Thanks for letting me know I'm not just yelling into the darkness with this stuff, guys. It keeps me from getting discouraged. =)

I know what it is like to put a lot of effort into something, hoping to get published to no avail...

I'd pay attention to those advices . Glad to hear that you don't feel bad about this. If your editor was like my editor then he probable said "keep trying, keep up the good work, the raw talent is there now you just need to polish it a bit". I know it doesn't sound original but sometimes that's it, you just have to keep trying. I'll be waiting to hear news from you.

Urgh. Thanks Arion, I've been really busy with non-comic related stuff lately, and just when I needed a few moments to compose myself and plan my next move, a whole bunch of stuff came up.

Anyway, here's a little update, something to keep this thread going during the dry spells. I had a day off and wanted to kinda recharge my artistic batteries, so I decided to finish the design for the logo for a spaceship in my comic come hell or high water.

Doing Super-high contrast stuff is way outta my comfort zone, so this was a big challenge for me, and I had to do some repair work with gesso, but oh well.

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c112/Benjamin-the-fox/twologo.jpg

Here's a more finished, shoulder-patch version, with the name of the ship and Leland (the rabbit's name) on it.

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c112/Benjamin-the-fox/lelandspatchcopy.jpg

And finally, a less than stellar sketch of Leland and Ishmael (the squirrel character) that I did as a costume experiment more than anything. '

I'm just kidding, he used to be famous in the 80s, when Nexus was being published. Now it's just like he has disappeared...

You can order the Nexus: Space Opera collection from this month's Previews (AUG091044). The four parts collected here were published from 2007 to 2009 and present what is arguably the finest art in a superhero book (south of Darwyn Cooke's DC: The New Frontier and Frank Quitely's All Star Superman). He also illustrated a story in Harlan Ellison's Dream Corridor Vol. 2 (2007).

Thanks. I feel much more confident than I was when I started this thing, but I definitely feel like I'm gonna have to bring on some help for future issues/chapters.

I think as long as I do all the inkwashing and layouts, I should be able to retain the look of the comic, even if I get help with some of the drawings.

Well, we'll cross that river when we get to it. Meanwhile, I've got four pages to draw before issue 1 is complete.

Well, I've been drawing Leland so long I can usually eyeball him and get pretty close to the look I want, but he does tend to go off-model a bit, namely in the exact length of his snout.

Anyway, here's page 19, where we first see the Preacher, the other main antagonist of the story, as he squabbles with Councilman Waldgrave.

I know what you mean. Sometimes we just need a break .
I remember a few months ago I had to finish a small comic book project and I even started skipping classes to get it done on time. It was time consuming and although I was having fun doing it sometimes it was just too much.

By the way, congratulations on the last page. It looks really good. I'm trying to imagine what the dialogues are.

Thanks Arion.

I'm kinda struggling with the cover right now, since I haven't done color work in a long time now.

As soon as I finish it, I'm gonna format and letter the comic, and I'll probably have it available in some form soon after that.

I'll keep everyone updated.

Covers are difficult. You have great artists that sometimes can't draw an appealing cover. I draw some stuff from time to time and whenever I've tried to do a cover I've come up with poor results. But you are a talented guy, I know you'll come up with something good.

Thanks, getting those reflections right was quite an effort.

I'm planning to do an extreme close-up image of an element from the most important scene from each chapter for the covers. Something that has a nice contrast with the interior artwork.

Thank you, I feel honored . I'm going through a bit of financial restraints but in a couple of months I should be more than able to pay for it. I feel like it'd be abusive of me to request a free copy after all the hard work you've put into it.

Okay, Time to resurrect this thread. Feel kinda bad about not posting anything for a while here, but I had to step back from actively working on my comic to take care of some other stuff. So let's post some news updates!

My Website is up and running, and since I know diddly about HTML, advertising, or website design, it's been quite the (time consuming) learning experience. Anyway, here's the link: www.Lucrecomics.com (http://www.Lucrecomics.com)

And here's my latest Shuttered City related thing, a character sheet! Whoooo....

I spent Way too much time on this. Hidden to keep it from stretching out the screen. Large version available here: http://benjamin-the-fox.deviantart.com/art/Character-Sheet-With-Mini-Bios-148483787

Thanks Arion. Yes I did make the site myself, but I'm not about to pretend that I know how or why it works. I just used a visual HTML editor with some minor tweaks to the script in Wordpad. And as for the actual controls for navigating the comic, I just used some free script I found on this guys' blog, and played with it till it worked (though that did require a lot of copying and pasting in WordPad, since when I tried to assemble it in Komposer, it kept breaking the page.)

Anyway, I'm glad it came together, and is functional, 'cuz there were a few late nights when I was definitely sweating it, along with some 3:00 AM epiphanies.

And Thanks for the compliment on the Character sheet. I'd really wanted to do something different from most character sheets, and I hope I succeeded. I'm considering printing out a poster of it, when I have the dough.

I'm glad you're still commenting on this thread Arion. It's nice to get some feedback as I resurrect this thread and begin making my way toward...Issue TWO!

I wrote out the whole story in September/December of 2008, I just had so much trouble making my way through issue one.

Also I've been taking breaks to do other stuff, attend conferences, etc. and the number of mistakes I made that necessitated starting over on very complex pages.

I've learned how to work with the medium much better now, and how to compromise with it when something isn't perfect, so I suspect that this one will go much faster. Although I'd like to say 2 months, I have a feeling it might be as much as 3 or more, but we'll see.

Until then I'm just going to keep updating issue one every few days. It'll give me a little breathing room on issue one.

I've just finished laying out page one of issue 2, and I'm gonna start detailing and inking it right now.

Yeah it's somewhat simplistic compared to some of the linework for issue one, but since I need to remember that the finished, inkwashed version is what's important, I'm trying to keep the detail reasonable as best I can.

Anyway, here it is inkwashed!

Simplistic is not bad (mind you, that's how I draw most of the time). I have yet to learn how to do the inkwash thing. I love how it looks, it's a very special texture.

Yeah it's a tricky but I think I'm getting better at knowing when to stop and declare a picture done before I drown in the details.

Doing everything on tracing paper first is helping a lot I think. Let's me concentrate on the details rather than setting up the composition on the watercolor paper.

Hope you enjoy those links.

I was reading some European comics from 390 years ago or so and a couple of artists would be so keen on details that it was just insane. It's good to know when to stop.

I think this is the first time I see how you work. Great to see those sketches there .

That's a good page . How do you get the perspective of the streets ?

Well I drew the horizon line for all the buildings, and depending on the angle of the building from the reader's point of view I marked the vanishing point farther or closer on the left (the vanishing points are several inches off to the left side so I was using bits of tape to mark them on the board) until the ones further back were just vanishing directly to the vanishing point directly down the street.

And that was a lot harder to explain than it was to just draw. I've taken to substantially reducing the detail on buildings far away in perspective and just inkwashing over them to get the right atmosphere. I'm learning to minimize detail where I can and save my energy for the more important stuff.

I was just asking because I always have such a hard time with perspective. I mean, look at this :
http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc299/tebeos2006/a31.jpg

It just looks bad.

By the way, I had an accident on Wednesday. I nearly cut my right thumb. I went to the hospital and I got some stitches and now I'm not supposed to move my thumb for nine days. Good thing is that I can still move it, so it's not as serious as it sounds but at least for now I won't be able to draw at all.

Benjamin-the-Fox
02-20-2010, 11:06 AM
Ooh, sorry to hear about that Arion, I once stabbed myself in the left thumb with a razor blade; that wasn't fun. Hope you're back at it sooner rather than later, but if the cut was made where some tendons run through, you're gonna have some stiffness and an unpleasant tearing sensation whenever you stretch your thumb out for a while. Well good luck and lemme know how it turns out.

Now, as for perspective, I'm no grand technical master, and I was never a great draftsman, but ultimately you just really have to pick a horizon line, make sure all the buildings are disappearing toward the horizon line (though not necessarily the same vanishing point, if the buildings are at odd angles to each other), and try not to get lost in the sea of construction lines, which has always been my problem. I kinda fight that by inking parts as I go so I can erase some of the pencil lines and not totally get lost in the spider web. I usually draw out the construction lines for the walls, then ink them, erase the pencils, then draw in the construction lines for the windows and doors.

Not a lot of help if you're working in pure pencils...but I'm a lousy penciller anyhow.

Oh and make sure you've got the scale of the buildings right. If you've got a guy in the foreground and a building twenty feet behind him, draw some perspective lines from the guy to the horizon, and where the building is, measure against that point on his perspective lines, so that the building is the correct scale, and it won't end up looking like, if he walks away from the viewer, he'll trip over the little doll house in the background.

Hope this helps. I'm gonna upload page 3 of issue 2 soon, and I'm halfway through page 4, so updates coming as soon as I can manage them.

Thank you! I just had an art lesson with your post.
I've been taking pills for the pain and everything and I can now move the thumb but it still hurts so I can't really do much. Anyway, this was a real funny weekend for me. First there was the tsunami risk and people panicking and leaving their beach houses in full stampede. All of my friends wanted to return to the city (and let's remember that Lima is in the coast), anyway, I convinced them to stay. Cell phones were ringing for at least three hours, there were contradictions, but believe me it was fun.

By the way, I really like the facial expressions in the last page you posted. Those faces really communicate things.

You live in Peru, Arion? I never realized that. I hope everything's okay for you there. Did you actually experience any effects from the earthquake?

Took a little while, most annoying thing was drawing in all the scribbles for the bark and having my marker-pens run out of ink. I still haven't finished painting this page because I was called out of town for a couple of days.

Speaking of which...I'll be going out of town next weekend too, to MegaCon in Orlando, where I'll be selling printed copies of The Shuttered City. Hope it gets my name out there and draws in some people to my website.

I'd invite you to stop by Arion, but Florida's a bit of a ways from Peru.

Well, I'm glad nothing dangerous happened in Peru. I've been through some nasty hurricanes, but never an earthquake, I can't imagine what those are like to experience.

I like page 5, but is it me or it looks darker than usual?

Yes, yes it does. I rushed to post it and must've screwed up the photoshop settings. I'll try to fix it a little later.

Just got back from Orlando about an hour ago. Made some contacts, showed off my work, got some leads etc. Didn't make any money but whatever. Now I've got to follow up on those leads...tomorrow. ;)

Glad to hear your thumb is healing. Hope you get back to drawing soon. :)

I have been very busy lately and unable to work as much as I'd like on Issue 2, so I just wanna post this panel from page 6 up by itslef, to give ya'll an idea of what I'm up to.

Enjoy, and lemme know what you think. :)

Thank you. Well, I fell down yesterday by accident and now my whole hand hurts, but at least nothing happened to my thumb.

Important thing is to do what you do . Which is to keep moving. Money will come later, don't worry about it now.

In the meantime, Enjoy! Or else!

I think I'll just leave the tombstones with the squiggle text. I really don't feel like trying to do good lettering for them. Of course, given the tombstones I saw in Ireland where the carver seemed to keep running out of space and skipping to the next line or squishing the text in to fit, maybe the standards aren't that high.

Heh.

Anyway, I've been sick for the last couple of days, so I've gotten very little done, but I'm trying to force myself to do the inks for page 8 right now. I'll be uploading that in the next couple of days if I have the willpower to finish it.

Hey Guys, thanks! Sorry I haven't updated or responded for the last couple of weeks, but I developed a really nasty cough that I just couldn't shake, and between that, work, and trying to keep up my artwork, I just kind of forgot about this thread.

Anyway, I am finally finishing up the artwork for page 6, I skipped ahead and did page 7 and most of 8, because I was experimenting with changing lighting conditions, and wanted to ensure a smooth transition.

Page 6 is 97% done now. Two panels are half done, so I'm gonna finish that up today.

And, while it may not be much to look at, I have started updating Issue 2 on www.LucreComics.com, even if it is just the cover.

Don't worry, important thing is that you're OK now. By the way, I like the cover, those handcuffs really make it look dramatic. And the last page is great, it feels like it needs no dialogue because it's all there, a certain tenderness and sadness, it's a very expressive page.

Thanks Arion. I still have my misgivings about the cover of Issue 2, but the positive response it's gotten has warmed my feelings toward it a bit.

I'm glad the melancholy mood of page 6 comes through. I was worried that issue 2 would be rather dull, since it's mostly character development and dialogue, so I have to make sure that the mood and atmosphere are as close to perfect as I can make them.

I'm going to have to be very careful when I add the dialogue to this page, so as not to ruin the composition and mood.

I think it looks great. I have been suffering because of time limitations ... It has been quite a crazy week for me (no wonder I couldn't post here for over a week). I had to finish my 7 page comic before Friday and with the current home situation I just couldn't concentrate there. Plus let's throw in the upcoming elections for major and the noisy and chaotic street campaign, I just couldn't draw. So I've pretty much spent the last week at the café in the Galería Lucía de la Puente finishing my drawings. I love it there because with only one buck I can stay there for over 4 hours and nobody is telling me to hurry.

Here, let me show you my table (I always had it reserved for me, isn't that just great service?).

Oh that's very cool. I wish I had a spot where I could go to concentrate on artwork. I used to spend a lot of time at my old school's animation lab, but I don't live anywhere near there any more. I've been spending a lot of time at the local university working on various projects, but I still miss the old lab... home can be so distracting.

Anyway right now I'm working on an illustration for a historical pamphlet the university's history department is putting out; I should be done with it already but it's coming along well. I'll upload it when it's done.

I keep wasting time on 3-d assignments when I really need to be concentrating on my paintings, so I'm going to dig my heels in and do something simple for this next assignment.

You're insane...ly talented, Justin. Never forget that.

That's how I read that. But, thanks Andreas. :)

That Treasure painting was such a slog to complete, and now I've found it's a nightmare to reproduce correctly. Something about the contrast of the colors and shadow, and the reflectiveness of the ink... in the end I had to take it to a specialty art/photo reproduction shop, and ended up shelling out 20 bucks for a high quality print of it.

Working on the comic seems downright easy in comparison. Just shades of gray, oh thank God...

I was kinda hoping that working on some fine-art/illustration pieces would raise my skill level and make working on the comic easier, and it seems to be working. With any luck, I'll have issue 2 finished by the end of January.

Well that was a long-winded response to a two sentence post. I must be feeling talkative today.

I literally had the paintbrush on the paper the moment the neighbors began setting off all their fireworks. What exiting lives we artists lead.

Did you catch this bug too, Andreas? I'm still battling the bronchitis from the flu or whatever it was I got.

I think it's a combination of temperatures below freezing point outside and dry, heated air inside. And of course, lucky me left the house this morning at exactly the same time there was a heavy shower of sleet. So far I avoided a flu, but I'm battling off cold feet, a cough, a massive migraine (ow!), and a sinusitis. Which reminds me that I need to put a bowl of water on my heater.

Get well soon. :)

Worst thing right now is the length of time these coughs tend to last. I've gotten them twice in the past few years, and it took a month each time to shake it.

Also, the anti-biotics seem to be killing the GOOD bacteria in my body too, so...yeah I'm kinda falling apart. Felt like I was going top pass out in the sauna at the gym...

So glad I don't live up north; the cold weather woulda killed me. I think I'd better stay south of the Mason-Dixon line, at least in winter.

Ok, enough whining; page 14 is in progress, but it's got a long way to go. I'm gonna try to get a decent amount of work done on it tomorrow evening.

I can recommend Esberitox (http://www.amazon.com/Enzymatic-Therapy-Esberitox-Chewables-Tablets/dp/B0013OSEL4/) or Echinacea (http://www.amazon.com/Echinacea-400-mg-100-Caps/dp/B00068U25O/) (natural herbs) to enhance your immune system. When I notice a cold coming I take them several times a day for about three days in a row, and usually this prevents the cold. Perhaps you can avoid anti-biotics that way in the future.

My dad uses Echinacea and sometimes gives me a dose if I'm feeling ill. Didn't seem to work this time. Maybe if I upped the dosage next time.

Anyway...

Hey, I really like this man, it is stunning. Your characters "act", and you really tell a strong story visually. I think those two things, near as I can tell, are tremendously important. I'll get a copy when I can, thank you for sharing this.

Hello all.

It's been a while since an update, so I'd like to give ya'll a heads up on the current status of The Shuttered City, Issue 2.

I've been working on the last six pages, trying to get them done before the end of the month. One page is done, but I don't want to upload it out of order, because I jumped ahead. I've been working away on the last section all at once instead of one page at a time, so I've got little bits done on all the different pages. It keeps me from getting all bogged down.

Anyway, I'd like to imagine that I'm half done with the last batch of five pages, and I've been doing some experimenting with harsher/more direct lighting and painted, un-lined backgrounds. Hopefully this will make the comic more lively and dynamic without losing the mistyness of the earlier sections.

Anyway, no major hiccups so far, and I'm very happy with the current batch, so here's hoping to have an update soon.

Hey Folks, just finished the linework for the cover of the third issue of The Shuttered City. I know it's a bit of a muddle right now with all that detail, but once I ink in the shadows things should really start to pop.

This went pretty smoothly; I can only hope that shading and painting it goes just as smoothly.

The comic this is for is available online here: http://lucrecomics.com/

After wrapping up my classes and applications this spring, I decided to have another go at digital art, as it's something I've never really mastered.

This is a simple piece, but the first successful piece of digital art I've ever completed.

Hopefully this will open up new artistic horizons for me and widen my scope of abilities.

...used to? I haven't given up on it just yet. But seriously though thank you. As soon as I get over this digital art kick I'm on I'll start working on Issue 3 more seriosuly.

Right now I've got a little bit of color on the cover for issue 3 and it's starting to look at me resentfully.
