View Full Version : NYC DRINK UP! June 5th 2009!
THWIP!

We can talk about wherever you guys want to have this, I really don't care about that.
The important thing is that we will be joined by a special guest. Former Bendis Boarder Shawn DePasquale. And maybe even the elusive David The Mighty.
Shawn is moving to California but is making a stop in NY and wants to hang out with us. Let's show him a good time.

I'm in, and a Fourthman b-day bash to boot? and possible Dave the Mighty sightings??? Badass!
(watch though, now that I'm going Flonk will have some convenient excuse as to why he can't make it. watch, just watch)
Also, if you guys can make a note of it now, on June 25th Ashok is throwing a birthday blow-out (for himself :) ) at Arlene's Grocery. We'll be playing in a reconfigured version of Stephanie's band, on the same bill with Locksley and Titus Andronicus! Should be quite an evening.
I'm sure Ashok or I will start a specific thread about it in early june, but wanted to throw it out there now in hopes a lot of peeps can make it then.

They also have a great jukebox, but ... the place is tiny, and narrow, and tiny.
What about 7B in the East Village? On the corner of Ave B and 7th Street (across from Tompkins Park). We ended up there once one other time (after starting somewhere else, I think that first Ghost Town show) It's a dive bar, also has a good jukebox, and enough room that we should be able to coral a couple of tables or a corner. Plus there are a lot other place we could migrate to in that neighborhood if it was too full or something.

Everyone have a lovely time.
Mr. McManus and I will be seeing NIN in Camden that night so unfortunately we can't make it. Which sucks b/c I haven't been to NYC since I "lost" my job there and moved back to the Philly office. -sigh- I do miss it.

I'll be there - looking forward to meeting people I have intermittently posted online with/near!
7B is a fine choice. There are zillions of bars down there that would do the trick, if 7B is packed, as an earlier poster mentioned. As an alternative, anyone ever been to The Distinguished Wakamba? It's at 37th and 8th, and it's one of the strangest bars I've ever been to (but it's awesome).

Passed by a very nice place on the West side, at the piers across from 26th street there were old boats docked with open bars on top. Right in the river!

Wasn't it June 5? And if enough of us are Brooklynites, there are some great bars out here, too - of all types. A lot have outdoor sections, for example, and there's not much better on a spring night.
Maleev (or any other Brooklyn folks), what's your neighborhood, just out of curiosity? I'm in Clinton Hill.

Close to Penn is good for me too. With my new train schedule I'll have to leave earlier, so the closer the better.
So where we going gentlemen?
I've only been once, and it was to Sally's. Sally's was good, but I'm willing to go other places should the NYC Elite deem other places better, and easy to get to for a New Jersian.

As an NJ commuter, taking the Holland in to this bar is as easy as anything else. But you are right, the hard core commuters might have a problem. This IS pretty downtown.

Grand Central is still midtown, so you are looking at a three mile hike to get to the bar downtown. You could probably take a cab or the subway, depending on how comfortable you are with either.
Jonny Z
06-04-2009, 10:05 AM
for those wanting to get there somewhat easily and cheap, the C or E trains stop 2 blocks away at Spring Street (Then walk 2 blocks west on Spring to get to the bar). The 1 train also stops at Canal street nearby

Hm, Grand Central is a different thing all together. There are places to hang and drink right in Grand Central actaully. :)
Or, you guys could walk over to the Royalton Hotel on 44th. Always a great place to hang and booze in their bar.
That's also the east side train line (4, 5, 6) so maybe 119 Bar might be back in play?
EDIT: Seems like everyone is cool with Antartica though, so Jen and Trav are probaly gonna have to cab it. But if you guys do, your first few rounds are on us for the extra bucks you'll have to spend there and back.

We're looking at a 20 dollar can ride, aren't we?
I don't know what kind of action you guys are looking for here in the city, and I'm certainly no expert, but I think you'll find a can ride for a $20 spot, sure ... :mistrust: Maybe you should just check Craig's List for that.
A cab ride however should be a little less probably, but over $10 ...

I guess we'll end up looking at StopHopper and figuring it out from there, or just taking a cab. I'm still not 100% sure if we're coming or not, and if we are, if we're bringing my sister-in-law and her husband.
I hope you come down. I'm dying to meet you face to face. Not in a gay way. . .unless you want it to be.

You out of towners and your Hop Stop. It's cute.
(and yeah that works, but they're 4 bucks in for subway rides and wasting time with the shuttle when for a little more you can just get there without all the BS. But if finances are the main consideration then that would be the way to go.)

Hey Trav and Jen if it's still raining pretty good when/if you get here, you might have trouble getting a cab around Grand Central. So if you want to do the subway, go back in the station, go downstairs buy a Metrocard (I guess put $8 on it, that's a ride there and back tonight for both of you) then find the "S" or Shuttle to Times Sq. Then find the blue circles for the "A, C, E" lines when you get off the shuttle. You have to walk a bit through a long hallway to get there as those trains are another block from the Times Sq station. Then grab the C or E (not the A) downtown to Spring St.
If you do come with friends though, and you can find a cab (I'd suggest trying to get one going down Lex if there's a long line at the cab stand on 42nd street) you're better off, and it won't cost but a few bucks more than taking the subway would've for the four of you anyway.

A reminder to anyone who might be interested, thursday night (6/25) Ashok is throwing a 30th birthday party at Arlene's Grocery (http://www.arlenesgrocery.net/main.html) I'll be playing in Stephanie's new band Ivory Daggers at around 8:00PM. Also on the bill are one of my very favorite bands around Locksley (http://locksleymusic.com/) as well as New Jersey's own Titus Andronicus (http://www.myspace.com/titusandronicus). That is one hard hitting, fully hipster approved line-up right there.
Cover is $6, there are already 120 plus people confirmed just from his e-vite, so the place should be packed and in full rock and roll mode that night.
Anyone who can make it, please do, should be a great time.
