I thought the official talking point was that he cracked within minutes???
Edit:
From Wikipedia (follow the links for more data)
According to sources familiar with a private interview of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, he claimed to have been waterboarded five times.[94] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_boarding#cite_note-John_Mayer_Black_Sites-93) A CIA official told ABC News that "he had been water-boarded, and had won the admiration of his interrogators because it took him two to two-and-half minutes to start confessing—well beyond the average of 14 seconds observed in others".[101] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_boarding#cite_note-Independent_WB_091307-100) This is disputed by two former CIA officers who are reportedly friends with one of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed's interrogators. The officers called this "bravado" and claimed that he was waterboarded only once. According to one of the officers, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed needed only to be shown the drowning equipment again before he "broke". "Waterboarding works", the former officer said. "Drowning is a baseline fear. So is falling. People dream about it. It’s human nature. Suffocation is a very scary thing. When you’re waterboarded, you’re inverted, so it exacerbates the fear. It’s not painful, but it scares the shit out of you". This former officer had been waterboarded himself in a training course. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, he claimed, "didn’t resist. He sang right away. He cracked real quick". He said, "A lot of them want to talk. Their egos are unimaginable. [He] was just a little doughboy. He couldn't stand toe to toe and fight it out".[94] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_boarding#cite_note-John_Mayer_Black_Sites-93) After being subjected to waterboarding, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed claimed involvement in thirty-one terrorist plots.[102] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_boarding#cite_note-BBC_WB_091507-101)
So if he cracked right away, why did they keep waterboarding him?
Somebody is lying.

It also means our government and the previous administration has repeatedly lied to us about the scope of their use of water boarding.
It should also be remembered that we actually executed people under war crimes charges on the grounds that they water boarded people. Water boarding is illegal and is a war crime. Fact.

CIA Confirms: Waterboarding 9/11 Mastermind Led to Info that Aborted 9/11-Style Attack on Los Angeles
The Central Intelligence Agency told CNSNews.com today that it stands by the assertion made in a May 30, 2005 Justice Department memo that the use of “enhanced techniques” of interrogation on al Qaeda leader Khalid Sheik Mohammed (KSM) -- including the use of waterboarding -- caused KSM to reveal information that allowed the U.S. government to thwart a planned attack on Los Angeles
After he was subjected to the “waterboard” technique, KSM became cooperative, providing intelligence that led to the capture of key al Qaeda allies and, eventually, the closing down of an East Asian terrorist cell that had been tasked with carrying out the 9/11-style attack on Los Angeles

I'm glad Obama released the torture memos, but I think he should take Cheney's advice and release documents about the effectiveness of torture. Cheney lied about asking the CIA to declassify them, so he's probably bluffing, but I would like to see a study of the amount of and number of people we tortured versus the actual actionable intelligence we received from it. If they produced good intelligence, it wouldn't retroactively excuse those who tortured and those who drafted those memos (they should all be prosecuted), but if they didn't, we won't have to hear bullshit unsupported claims of their efficacy anymore.

Well, I think I'll volunteer to have my head cut off, and then be put onto a plane that's flown into a building. Ok, yes, waterboarding is obviously not comparable to suicide bombings, and the sick shit that a lot of the terrorists do.
However, that does not excuse us from starting down that merry little path. The fact is, torture is torture, and there is a reason most civilized people do not excuse its use.
Beyond the fact that its merits are questionable at best, once it is a given that we no longer abide by the Geneva conventions, how much do you think people are going to be willingly taken? Seems to me, if I knew I was going to be held indefinitely and tortured, or I could die for my savior and get 72 virgins; I would sure as shit attempt to martyr myself instead, and take a hell of a lot of my perceived enemies with me.

Look at their "history" page:
Study after study by the Media Research Center, the parent organization of CNSNews.com, clearly demonstrate a liberal bias in many news outlets – bias by commission and bias by omission – that results in a frequent double-standard in editorial decisions on what constitutes "news."

I personally think torture is inexcusable, and it's illegal nationally and internationally on top of that (we prosecuted the Japanese for waterboarding as war crimes after WWII), so people who committed those acts should be prosecuted. As to whether it will change anything, I know where I stand (illegal!), but if it's going to happen I want there to be transparency for a real public debate on the issue.

I'm not disagreeing with you on the last point at all. We sometimes handcuff ourselves while trying to win a fight and non-uniformed fighters without a nation provide a difficult legal trick. But when it comes down to it, waterboarding steps over the line. It's been deemed an unacceptable tool to use in interrogation since the Philippine-American War.
Also, your first analogy is completely erroneous. Maybe I'm missing something, but both the rhetoric and records from American run POW camps during WWII show humane treatment.
There's a great passage from Theodore Rex by Edmund Morris that covers Roosevelt's thoughts on the issue.
"For the very reason that the president intends to back up the Army in the heartiest fashion in every lawful and legitimate method of doing its work; he also intends to see that the most vigorous care is exercised to detect and prevent any cruelty or brutality and that men who are guilty thereof are punished. Great as the provocation has been in dealing with foes who habitually resort to treachery, murder and torture against our men, nothing can justify or will be held to justify the use of torture or inhuman conduct of any kind on the part of the American Army.”

Great quote. I'm almost frightened by people who don't get this concept. It's like they don't understand the very basics of what the American ideal is. We're supposed to be better than this.

This obviously was abhorrent behavior on our part, and we should be ashamed. Also, the people responsible should be held accountable.
It's called the rule of law, and it is the foundation of this nation.
But what's worse about this entire debacle is that nothing, absolutely NOTHING could be a better recruiting tool for those we are supposedly trying to stop. Every story like this damages our ability to battle those who want to harm the ideals for which we stand, harm us.
The world is a small place in this day and age, and reputations can be demolished nearly instantaneously, even those which have been carefully cared for.
When we engage in an activity such as this, we accomplish one thing: We convince those who have been told "The United States is EVIL!" that they were being told the Truth.

Perhaps, but I think this enemy is far different than the Nazi's and has to be dealt with on a different basis. They talk of peace, but would kill us all in a moment if given the chance and I think we just can't give them the benefit of the doubt. America is bad about thinking that we are untouchable and Pearl Harbor happened, we got to that place again and 9/11 happened and unfortunatly it will probably happen again I hate to say. I'm more in favor of a pre-emptive strike on our enemies and this enemy is not as easy to find thus I think it requires different methods to ascertain who they are and to deal with them. I know we may not agree on this, but we're just going to have to agree to disagree I think.

I think I do, but maybe not. I think that left alone it is going to fester and do more damage in the long run. I think if followed it will lead to members of congress as well as the Bush admin. I think that a big reason this is not followed up on is because of where it will lead.

I have seen cops do it and it is fucked up.

I suppose it depends on how it was done, if it was done to inflict serious injuries it could be construed as torture. But it strikes me as a small thing to fret about.

Oh fuck that. I'm looking at specifics of what this "torture" entails, and it's "forced nudity", sleep deprivation, face slapping...I want to know under what circumstances by who and to whom. This is the biggest load of politicized shit I've ever seen.
No wonder Obama doesn't want to make a bigger deal out of it.

:: In "walling," the interrogator would pull a detainee toward him, then slam him against a "flexible false wall" in a technique designed to create a loud sound and shock the prisoner.
A detainee may be walled once to make a point or 20 to 30 times when interrogation requires "a more significant response to a question."
It was just to shock the detainee? A loud sound is supposed to make a trained terrorist give up info?
