The Waiting Place is the teen drama McKeever created and self-published for several years beginning in 1997. Telling the story of a group of coming-of-age characters in small-town Wisconsin, the series caught the eye of Marvel editors and paved the way for the writer's comics career. The Waiting Place is also where readers first saw McKeever together with Norton as they collaborated on the comic, and the creative team later introduced Gravity to the Marvel Universe in that character's five-issue origin mini-series.
Newsarama: What's this rumor about a new story about The Waiting Place? Is it true?
Sean McKeever: Yeah, I got in contact with IDW late last year, and we set up a deal to reprint all of The Waiting Place in one volume, so that will come out in September. Mike Norton's done a new cover for it, and it's a really awesome cover.
And as an extra-special treat, Mike and I are going to be putting together a new 20-page story for the collection.
Back in New York Comic Con, in February, I had an idea for a new story, but I was kind of struggling with the ending. And then I saw this commission that Mike did for somebody of Jeffry and Lora from The Waiting Place. And seeing Mike, today, drawing those characters just lit a fire under my butt to get the story going. So I finally came up with the whole story. I'm scripting it currently. And I'm really geeked to see Mike draw them with his ability now.
NRAMA: Is this an ending for the characters?
SM: It's a coda. I don't want to say too much about it, but I think fans will really like it.
NRAMA: How was it to return to these characters after all these years?
There's some stuff about him leaving Teen Titans and such, but I need to do a lot of catching up. I will say, I'm incredibly geeked on a personal level to see The Waiting Place get a second chance at an expanded audience on a personal level. Beyond just adoring the book, it's one of the few comics out there that means something to me personally. It helped me through a really dark period in my life, and on top of that, helped to influence me in telling the story of Love Buzz through the comic medium. It told me that a down to earth, personal book could be modestly successful and make an impact. I talked to Sean last year at NYCC and gave him my old busted up trades to sign and told him all about how much the book meant to me and then back in February, I got a message from him on MySpace, telling me he saw the Love Buzz solicit and was excited to pick the book up. That was an awesome moment.
I urge everyone to check it out, whether you haven't ever read it before, or you just want it for the new 20 page story McKeever and Norton are doing. This book deserves to be read by way more people than it has in the past.

Hey, IDW, take a look at the Local hardcover from Oni, and then do that.
That would be awesome.

How many issues was this? I love SMLMJ so I will most likely check this out.
I actually just finished the first Waiting Place trade today. I pretty much dug it and wouldn't mind seeing more.

Sweet! Already got the collection, but I'm happy for Sean, who I met last year and was easily one of the nicest guys on the floor.

Ah...I've been looking for this for a while now but the trade was out of print.
Can't wait to read this. And awesome that there's a new coda to the whole thing.

So it's your fucking fault I have to buy a new edition of something I already own?
Asshole.

I would concur, but I don't think I'd see it happening, sadly. I think it'll most likely be one of those regular book sized omnibus things they and Dark Horse have been doing of late, which I'd also greatly appreciate, because I like that format too.

Kelley? Seriously....wouldn't add the middle name. :p
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE The Waiting Place. I bought the issues as they were coming out and my wife even read it and LOVED IT! She was all like comics suck, here read this, oh that sucked...GOT ANY MORE! YEAH BABY!
Depending on the packaging/production design IDW comes up with, loving the cover so far (it sort of looks like it could be like a D&Q type of book), I'll probably pick this up.

Pretty sure he used his full, full name back when these were originally in print, so that's probably the reason it's staying the same here.

I'm pretty sure he didn't...cause I would have totally made fun of him at the conventions over it.

The Waiting Place may be my favorite comic series of all time. It's certainly one of the top 3. Absolutely perfect in every way, shape and form. Even if I didn't have the issues and the trades and there wasn't new material I'd be getting this new collection to support the book.
Fan-friggin-tastic news.
I swear if I had the choice of writing a year long run on Amazing Spider-Man bringing Ben Reilly back or my own one-shot slice of life comic with characters as realistic and honest as TWP I'd go for the one shot. Brilliant series.

He was always planning on writing the short. Mike Norton told me, and sean confirmed it (but didn't want the info leaked)

I just hope it isn't too expensive. I'm happy do double dip regardless but I've definitely got a budget to keep

I haven't read this but really enjoy McKeevers work. Have wanted to pick this up for some time...but I kinda forgot to...my B. BUT, now I'm glad I didn't buy it (that sounds bad) because I'm a sucker for hardcover editions with extra stuff. Looking forward to this.

I'd imagine 20 to 25 bucks would be the call. IDW just put out a collection of the first 20 odd issues of PAD's Fallen Angel for 25 bucks in full color. I'd imagine TWP would cost a bit less.

You can't always compare like that, because sometimes they can't find all the film from older books and have to redo it or whatever and production costs increase price, but yeah, I'd expect it to be around twenty, probably.

First comic I'll ever triple dip for. I first discovered the series 10 years ago at the Montreal Comic Con or Comic Expo (along with Copybook Tales, another great slice of life story). It's one of my favorite series of all time and definately my favorite non super hero comic.
Can't wait to have this latest volume.

You also got the Howard The Duck Omnibus printed, which I never thought I'd see beyond my wildest dreams, so you're alright by me, Grunwald.
