So I am definitely moving to Seattle. I leave Atlanta, GA on April 12th and hope to arrive in the Emerald City on April 16th or thereabouts.
With all that alone time, I'm going to get tired of listening to myself breathe so I'm hoping you all can recommend some music for me to put in the Ipod.
Please?

I usually listen to fairly mellow music (like Explosions in the Sky, Blonde Redhead, and Portishead), but I'm looking for more upbeat tunes.
Stuff that'll make me want to bang my head...or at least keep me awake. :D

I drive from Portland to LA and back every other month, and to TX two or three times a year because I love road trips. A couple of years ago I discovered podcasts, comedy albums and audiobooks, and as much as I love my music, they can make a road trip totally fly by.

But for music, Massive Attack, Conjure One, and surprisingly Sixpence None the Richer (it's my traditional anthem I play when crossing New Mexico) are my go to's. On road trips, songs you can sing really loud to are great, but only if alone. Even good music can get boring after 1000 miles.
So Pearl Jam Ten, Live Throwing Copper, Alanis Jagged Little Pill, and STP Core are good.

So you think driving music needs to synergize with the environment? 'Cause I'd warrant there're plenty of times when you want the exact opposite. Beautiful rolling plains are great, but sleep-inducing after a while. You need something to counterbalance that. Up-tempo music, urban music, singalong schlock, etc..

Let's just say adding some synergy could enhance the trip-- make you aware of the journey.
Stop the car once in awhile.
What would you recommend, Mr. Patch?
These aren't particularly designed to keep you awake, they may not be to your taste-- and they're not meditative exercises, just records; but adding a couple to your trip out west might add to the feeling of being there.
Bill Frisell - Ghost Town
Bob Dylan - Nashville Skyline
Marc Ribot - and the Prosthetic Cubans
Cowboy Junkies - Black Eyed Man
Grant Lee Buffalo - Mighty Joe Moon
Johnny Cash - American Recordings
Sonny Rollins - Way Out West
Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska
Ennio Morricone - spaghetti western music (Once Upon A Time in the West/The Good the Bad & the Ugly)
Lucinda Williams - her debut record (Side of the Road, Passionate Kisses)
Neil Young - Harvest
Calexico - Black Light
Neko Case - Blacklisted
Nick Cave/Warren Ellis - sndtrk to Assassination of Jesse James
Emmy Lou Harris - Elite Hotel
Howlin' Wolf - any Chess/MCA collection that includes Killing Floor
Aaron Copland - Appalachian Spring/Danzon Cubano/El Salon Mexico
Willie Nelson - Across the Borderline
there's dozens more; play some raucous blues at night, something majestic like the Copland when your driving through the mountains or a pastoral symphony in the morning; grab a classic country or tex-mex record.

Heh, yeah, I think comic art can become a very insular world. To meet deadlines artists learn visual shortcuts, and after a time they start building up to this surreal, dated representation of the world that's increasingly removed from reality. It can be kind of quaintly cool, but it can also come off really hokey.

I'd listen to my same list but I lived in Arizona for 20 years, drove through Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, New Mex, Tex, several times. And, as an artist-- had a lot of all-nighters.
Since alertness and speed is of the essence-- do like others have suggested and keep a lot your music lively.
It's a shame you have to drive it that way, especially if it's your first time. It's more monotonous when your trapped in your car.
Distances are vast, gas up, have water & snacks. Sun's bright out there, bring shades. Nights are cold.
Stopping, walking, and stretching will actually increase your alertness and reduce fatigue.

I usually listen to fairly mellow music (like Explosions in the Sky, Blonde Redhead, and Portishead), but I'm looking for more upbeat tunes.
Stuff that'll make me want to bang my head...or at least keep me awake. :D
Dave Matthews Band is good, particularly the live stuff they do.
Find yourself a copy of the 3-disc Central Park Concert. Mellow, jam-y, and definitely good travel music.

Having made a similar drive, I can safely say that Tom Wait's Bone Machine + Montana at night with the windows down = Perfection.
What brings you to Seattle?

Seattle's pretty awesome (went to Emerald Con a few years back, but my wife and I spent a lot of time downtown).
Met some great people too.

No.
It's just that two-thirds of that drive's across the West and all these suggestions are so urban-- out of touch with the experience.
Ditzy.
Flogging Molly is Urban?
R.L. Burnside doesn't connect with the experience of travelling cross-country?
Really?
Your list is good, but she asked for upbeat music that'd keep her awake. Most anyone is going to provide a list of loud sing-along type of music. Not appropriate mood music.
If we're going for appropriate music, I'd figure out which states I was travelling through, and find songs to match.

I was generalizing about the majority of the suggestions. I like your R.L. Burnside pick!
I think the blues sound great out on the road.

Of that CD for Kimberly, I gotta say that the only oddball song was the Outkast single. It was weird.
