Andy Richter to Rejoin Conan O’Brien as ‘Tonight Show’ Announcer

By Josef Adalian

Andy Richter is reuniting with Conan O’Brien, signing on to serve as announcer for Mr. O’Brien’s new incarnation of “The Tonight Show.”

NBC is expected to announce the decision later today.

Mr. Richter and Mr. O’Brien entered the pop culture landscape together in 1993, with Mr. Richter serving as sidekick to Mr. O’Brien when Mr. O’Brien took over from David Letterman as host of NBC’s “Late Night.” Mr. Richter left “Late Night” in 2000 to focus on acting.

On “Tonight,” Mr. Richter will not be a nightly desk-side presence as he was on “Late Night.” He will, however, participate in both live and pre-taped comedy bits.

“Andy is one of the funniest people I know, and we’ve maintained a close friendship since he left ‘Late Night,’” Mr. O’Brien said. “We have a proven chemistry that will be an incredible asset to ‘The Tonight Show.’”

What’s more, there’s a practical reason for Mr. Richter to join the “Tonight Show” team. “He owes me $300,” Mr. O’Brien said.

Mr. Richter was the last non-musical guest on the final edition of “Late Night With Conan O’Brien” last week.

Since leaving “Late Night,” Mr. Richter has been the lead in two half-hour network comedies, the critically acclaimed “Andy Richter Controls the Universe” and “Andy Barker, P.I.” He also has appeared in feature films “Talladega Nights,” “Blades of Glory,” “Semi-Pro” and “Elf.” He’ll next be seen this summer in the Fox feature “They Came From Upstairs.”

Mr. Richter is represented by CAA and manager Tim Sarkes.

Mr. O’Brien and Mr. Richter will make their “Tonight” debuts on June 1. Jeff Ross is the show’s executive producer.

He's gotta move across the country, get a new staff in place, etc. I'm not even sure 3 months is enough, tbh.

Probably to prepare for the new show just like Jimmy Fallon has been doing.

Several

1) To give him time to move out to the West Coast and put the new show together
2) To give Jimmy Fallon a little bit of the spotlight
3) To create hype for the new TONIGHT SHOW by having it be more than just Conan moving up an hour

Not just him, most of his crew and staff have to move across the country, as well. A friend of mine is making the move (and will not be working on the same studio lot as me!), and he said they will start doing rehearsals and practice shows a month or so out.

And I hadn't heard Max was coming along as well-- excellent.

On a total side tangent, I actually know where Andy lives and end up driving past his house pretty often...It's a surreal feeling when you're driving down the street at 8am and you see Andy Richter taking the trash cans to to curb.

I think when you get to be Joel's age, uprooting your life and moving to the opposite coast is out of the question. I'm sure Conan and Late Night gave him enough green to sit pretty for the rest of his life.

Also, Leno is a proven lead-in, which NBC surely wants Jimmy Fallon for his first few months. Conan, as much as I love in, has never led into anything but Last Call. So...

Awesome news. I'm glad Andy's not going back to the sidekick role, as I think Conan's gotten way better since then and it'd only hurt the show. BUT, having him around for bits is awesome, and should lead to a lot of great Conan-Andy interplay.

I figured something was up with Joel when Conan thanked him on air but they didn't show him during the last show. I assume he didn't want a big send off other then the clips package they showed earlier in the week.
