Yup!!!
This is supposed to be a big one, too. Not sure if the "rumors" are correct about the order being switched from this week's ep and next week's ep (as I find it hard to do with a show like this), but it has me even more curious about tonight's show!

It was confirmed on the official podcast from last Thursday. This is actually 5.7. They said they wrote 5.6 and 5.7 at around the same time and that they could be shown in either order. They also said they've done it once before during season one.

At first I didn't "get" the title, but the girl I work with (all we do is talk "LOST" from Tuesday until Friday) said she's pretty sure it's in reference to the bible...as in "JOHN 3:16"
Makes sense to me.

That was my immediate thought also. Especially since last week when Christian said "I guess that is why they call it sacrifice". It must also refer to some sort of calculation used to get back to the island.

Well...a quick online search reveals that John 3:16 says "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
Makes even MORE sense....hmmm.
Also, I always thought John 3:16 had something to do with sacking the QB.

Yes it does, notice it is the book of John.
Also, it has way more to do with wearing a rainbow colored clown wig then sacking QB's:wink:

I thought that was the one Bible verse everyone knew by heart.
But then I remember that not everyone went to Baptist Sunday School for 14 years.

I'm a half jewish-half catholic kid who never stepped foot in a church/synagogue unless someone died or got married. The only biblical verses I knew were the bastardized versions from Motley Crue lyrics and movies.

I'm looking forward to tonight's episode as well but I can't help but wonder what is going to happen after they get back to the island?
It's pretty obvious (unless I'm totally wrong) that Jack and the others are 'constants' for Sawyer and the others. And if Ben can't go back (again, I could be wrong), then who's going to be the bad guy? The smoke monster? Sleestaks?
That reminds me, has anyone noticed that Locke was the only one who wasn't being affected like the others with the nosebleeds? Makes one go "Hmmmm..."

I like Lost a lot, but the "let's recreate the plane crash" storyline is full of holes. What about the hundred people who died the first time around?
Jack's grandpa doesn't look bad for a guy's who's gotta be pushing at least 90!
Also, he's played by the guy who played Dewey Cox's father in Walk Hard.
"Wrong kid died!"
I like Lost a lot, but the "let's recreate the plane crash" storyline is full of holes. What about the hundred people who died the first time around?
I'm not a fan of this, either. Isn't it kind of a dick move to not try and stop a flight you know is going to crash and kill hundreds of people?
Also, they had it built up that everyone needed to be there at the ordained time in order to get back to the Island...nope, not really, you've got a few days to catch a flight! Kind of weak.

Here's the thing; we're assuming that Ben is telling the truth about them having to be on the island to stop the skips. We're assuming this is all good and proper.
When, in the history of this show, is that ever the case? What if the skips stopped because of something else and this is the Island three years later? Or what if it's the island in the past, but the skips have stopped?

Ana Lucia was pretty disliked. Libby had just barely gotten together with Hurley at the point of her death.
By contrast, they've spent lots of time over the last few seasons building the Desmond/Penny relationship as the emotional core of the series. They even showed Penny giving birth to Desmond's child a mere three weeks ago. I'm extremely skeptical that they're going to off Penny and undercut all of that.

Did the flight to Guam get caught in one of the time flashes?
Did the Island just pluck them from the plane?
The others, Jin, Sawyer, Juliet, Miles, Faraday, were they at a particular time period when Locke "fixed" the wheel? Is it possible they were stuck at a time when Dharma first came to the island? We saw Faraday with the Dharma crew that was first building the tunnel to open the ancient chamber where the wheel was hidden. Is this at a time when Ben is a toddler?
Did Jack, Ben, Hurley, et al get caught up in the last flash just as Locke slid down that rope and fell to the bottom of the "well"? Are they all now back at the beginning of the colonization by the Dharma Initiative?
A very hurley-burley episode, pun somewhat intended. Like last week, somewhat lacking in subtlety, pace seemed somewhat forced and rushed. Lacked (just a bit) that brilliant mixture of patience, mystery, and action that has characterized the show for the first 4 seasons. Some scenes seemed stitched together for effect, like the writers know we know, and they're glossing over the details. For example, *Jack, read the f**king letter!* Went on too long. After all that's happened, given all that Jack went through to view the body, given all that Locke's "death" meant to him in season 3 and 4, why wouldn't he read the letter after it was given back to him the first time? On the other hand, the actual content of the letter was pure LOST goodness.
Kate's motivations are strange. Actress E.L. seemed to be going through the motions, to me, but maybe I'm being unkind. If something tragic happened to Aaron, why would she jump into bed with Jack immediately after? If she gave Aaron up, again, why not tell Jack? Mystery getting heavy-handed, but not too much so.
Now I want to know how everyone got back together.
My biggest fear is that Penny is dead. And what happens to little Charley? What about the theories that Desmond and Penny are the "Adam and Eve" of the island, and all? Is Ben beaten up because Desmond defended Penny and did D. and P. and baby escape? Ben says, he ran into a little "snag" or something like that. I don't think his assassination attempt against Penny went as planned. At least I hope so!
I need to read your further discussion about this episde.. I'm distracted by tonight's show; it didn't leave me in a philosophical frame of mind. Someone said, "spoon-fed" to describe some of the pop-ups in the repeat show at 8 pm. Maybe that's the vibe I'm getting -- too much is either spoon-fed, or deliberately held back in a more obvious and clumsy attempt to create more mystery. But not to a great extent -- still most of the show was classic LOST storytelling. And it still is the best current TV show.

Well that was fun.
"What about the other people on the plane?"
"Who cares?"
I find it incredibly interesting that the island itself has always been moving around, not just since Ben and Locke turned the wheel. That explains why the islands weather used to be so wonky.
I hope Ben killed Penny.
I legitimately have no idea why Sayid would be in custody on a plane to Guam.
I think Charlie came to visit Hurley, which is why Hurley brought a guitar case onto the plane.

My guess is that as some people said already that when the plane went through the window, everyone who was returning to the Island time traveled to Dharma Days to sync up with everyone who was left behind. So there's no plane wreckage around Jack, Hurley and Kate because the plane and the other passengers went ahead and crashed on the Island in 2009. And those survivors were the ones who used up everything at the camp and were chasing/shooting at Sawyer and everyone in the canoes when they flashed to the future.

Another great episode! I know a lot of people are upset that we are getting some answers up front, but I welcome it. There is only a season and a half left and they have to answer some stuff along the way, at this point. Plus, with that said...there is still a season and a half left! Where do we go from here? That's a pretty big mystery into itself.
Yay for 'Y: the last man' plug!
Yay for Hurley buying up extra plane tickets to try and save lives!
Yay for Frank showing up again!
Pretty worried about what Ben did before he called Jack from the dock...at first I just assumed it was finally time to "take out" Whitmore, but now I am fearful it has to do with Penny.
And for those of you doubting how "dark" this show can get, I have seen people get buried alive, arms ripped off, women shot point blank in the gut and a son gas his father alive while he watched him die. Yeah...for better or worse, this show has, can and will get "that dark".
As for Aaron...well, honestly couldn't care less. Babies, kids always get written out of shows or sent to an alternate dimension and come back as a teenager or something, because well let's face it, 90% of writers write themselves into a corner with characters that young. No one knows what to do with them. And with Claire being seemingly written out the same way, it comes as no surprise.
*edit* also, forgot about the best line of the episode: "Because my mother taught me" Classic!

Hurley got out of jail because Ben's lawyer buddy told him he had a way to get him the charges against him dropped. How he decided to get on the flight is still on that plane...it sure as hell wasn't because of Jack, he was to busy getting a piece of ass. Guess I can't blame him for that one. ;)

I was thinking that once the 6 (plus maybe Frank and Ben) were in the island's radius and a flash happened and they jumped through time (since they should've been on the island in the first place) while the plane and the rest of it's passengers ended up crashing in the present.
Remember a few weeks ago when Sawyer and Faraday's crew make it to the beach and see the wreckage of the same airline the 6 were on? And then someone starts shooting at them on the raft? Probably the new survivors shooting at them and not the 6 after all.
Oh, and I loved the episode but am disappointed that they didn't try and bring Walt. He's the right age now, and it would've made sense if they were trying to recreate the crash (I feel like maybe Ben doesn't want him around). But other than that, great episode.

I really enjoyed the episode. For me it's a good model of what Lost is known for (generating mysteries to be explained later) but done as well as possible. I remember in season 3 when Jack was being held in that whatever room, there was a moment when Juliet created a few completely arbitrary mysteries in a row that were solved by the end of that scene or that episode. There can be a superficial pleasure to that kind of story-telling, but Lost really shines when it builds mystery like it did in 316. Not knowing what got Hurley, Kate, and Sayid aboard the flight, what happened with Ben, and what was in John's note really gave the episode a creepy atmosphere. It was integral to the plot for Jack to be out of so many loops.
Also, it's just fun when Ben busts out in some weird state and has to explain something really quickly.
Do any other Y fans think there was any significance to the volume chosen, returning astronauts and all?
My guess is Penny's dead. It just makes the most sense to the story if Desmond is to remain in it. Since it looks like everyone is going to wind up living in the past for a while, it will give future-changing Desmond some future-changing to do.
I could be wrong about this but is there really any reason to believe that Christian is not alive and well on the island? I haven't watched the early episodes in a while but wasn't his casket empty when Jack found it? I know he said he couldn't give Locke a hand when he had to turn the pirate wheel. I have a feeling Locke will be resurrected in full-flesh-form.
FRANK RULES!!!
Also, I like that it looks like were finally going to get some proper flashbacks.
I'm currently reading the same book Ben was reading. And I don't just mean the same work of literature, I mean the same edition.
The suicide note was awesome.
When Sayid was on his killing spree for ben, do we know if he ever offed anyone in Guam? Could be why he was being transported, even if we don't yet know how he was caught.
I think Locke will be resurrected, but not totally resurrected and walking around with everyone, he's going to have the same sort of status that Christian Shepard currently has. Although we don't really know what that status is.
Who stayed with the plane when it crashed? It's possible everyone not shown time jumped, or none of them.
Will flight attendant, Marshall Lady, and other first class guy remember seeing Jack, Hurley, Kate, and who knows who else disappear? And if so what repurcusions will that have if the meet up later?
What will hapen when/if they found out that Jack, et al, knew shit was going to go down.
Will Christian Shepard be pissed off that Locke is wearing his shoes?
"Who Cares?" The Island sure as shit doesn't care about a bunch of plebs.

Crazy thought:
Ben fulfills Walt's role of the "unwanted" child. IIRC at the time of the original crash, Michael was still unsure about having to take Walt. Time on the island solidified their relationship.

The island let Walt and Michael leave. That's why they didn't need to go back. They weren't trying to recreate the crash, they were just told to be on that flight if they wanted to get back to the island. They all figured it would probably crash.
If they did time jump out of it, and the plane crashed somewhere on the island, does that mean the first plane crash was caused the same way? Was someone on the original flight that had been on the island and was trying to get back?

...is he going to kidnap Walt?
I mean, if they're going to recreate the flight, then shouldn't he be on there?
I assumed he was going to kill Penny, since with Desomond's appearance, Ben now knows where she is.

I thought it was pretty clearly explained that the first crash was caused when Desmond refused to put the numbers in, and the electromagnetic field in the hatch almost literally "yanked" the plane toward the island.

It irritated me that Jack wore a suit, instead of clothes that would be reasonable for living on the island.

Remember he was told that they'd have to replicate as much stuff as possible from the first time. Jack was wearing a suit the first crash.

Bah! And Kate was wearing handcuffs on the original plane. Doesn't seem like the suit was necessary.

the suit gave us that very misleading (and awesome) opening scene. i thought for sure that we were getting some sort of flash back to the the first scene of the show there for a minute.

I can't see them letting Kate on the plane wearing handcuffs without some explanation.
In any case Eloise said they'd need to get as close as possible. I think she knew that they couldn't mirror everything picture perfect.

It made me wonder if we'll see some sort of closed loop with the survivors as we did with the compass.

Plus, as somebody already pointed out, Sayid was in handcuffs and thus was a proxy for Kate's original role. Kate's probably a proxy for Claire's original role: the mother abandoning her child. Claire did intend to abandon her child, after all.

I wonder if something happened when the plane crashed that sent Sawyer, Jin, Juliet, Daniel, Miles, etc into various, separate times. I mean, Jin seems to have acclimated himself to a certain time as if he's been stuck there a while. As did Daniel in the season premiere. I dunno if the plane crash did that but I can't imagine what would cause it.

Because three years would have now passed for Jin and all of the others on the island. They are in the 70's...but three years would still have to have passed for them to be meeting the Oceanic 6.

Ah so then they're all in the same time but they're stuck in the 70's. I guess I didn't think Jin looked like he was from the same time as Faraday did in the premiere.

You have to dress to impress and remind the island what it's been missing. :)

not necessarily, crazy shit going on with time could mean time was passing differently, or that because they were together on the Island they got pulled into the same time as the others because of some sort of link.

Walt will almost certainly be on next week. We'll surely see when Jeremy Bentham/Ben went to visit Walt (as we found out last season) while he's recruiting folks to go back to the island.
I thought this was a stellar episode!
Sorry, remind me--when/how did we learn this? Thanks!

Makes sense. The van still ran. Faraday being with Dharma earlier, warning Charlotte about dying if she comes back. Faraday is probably trying to figure out how to get them back to the present.

In the season finale last year, it's mentioned (by Michael's mother I think) that no one came to see Walt when they came back except "Jeremy".
And of course we now know that Jeremy was Locke.

Bingo. And Locke's relationship with Walt was something that always made me believe he'd talk to him. I'm thinking Walt COULD have been on that plane and no one would have known. He may have already been at the back of the plane when everyone else got on...that Locke would have told him not to contact the others when he saw them at the airport?

Ah, right. I remember now. Thanks FM!
All the good stuff's been covered already, but good catch on Jin-in-the-70s stuff..
As far as what happened with Ben -- I'd say he went to kill Penny, but Whidmore's goons roughed him up and it didn't go how Ben wanted. Whidmore knew where Penny/Desmond were going and was keeping tabs on them. Ben was too unnerved for everything to have gone the way he planned.
As far as parallels to the first crash --
Hurley reading the Spanish comic is a nice nod to Walt. Not intended as such, but still. What's interesting is that volume was about waiting for a crash to happen as well.

I don't think he pulled it off. Didn't he say something went wrong?
I was kind of hoping Ben stole Desmond and Penny's baby Charlie to lure them to the island.

I think he kidnapped Penny, and that forces Desmond to take the boat to the Pacific to find the island and fetch Ben.

Jin's face not being "dry-rotted" anymore pretty much means some time has passed. The Oceanic six were not pulled into the same time as we last saw Jin, Sawyer and the others. The Oceanic six WERE pulled into Jin, Sawyer and the other's CURRENT TIME.
Makes sense. The van still ran. Faraday being with Dharma earlier, warning Charlotte about dying if she comes back. Faraday is probably trying to figure out how to get them back to the present.
Exactly! Once Locke fixed the wheel, Jin and the others would have been stuck in whatever time period they were in.
What I think would be funny is if Daniel, Jin and the others had to wait around for a few months for Dharma to show up to start building The Orchid, which would be their only way to get back to their correct time. They start helping because they have nothing better to do and to get it done faster.
Ah so then they're all in the same time but they're stuck in the 70's. I guess I didn't think Jin looked like he was from the same time as Faraday did in the premiere. So this is just another way for ABC to promote Life on Mars?

An all-new Life on Mars? Coming up after an all-new Lost? On ABC?
I think Kate gave Aaron to Claire's mom.

actually...the Green Lantern Comic that was in Spanish that Walt was reading at the beginning of Season 1 was brought on the plane by Hurley.
Also...I loved Sayid's reaction when he saw Jack get on the plane. It was a very obvious:
"Wait...what the hell!? Aw...fuck you guys."

Great, great episode. I have no idea where they go from here.
There hasn't been a season that's gone as I expected yet.
After two seasons, I thought the series would end with them finally getting off the island.
They did that in season 3 and I thought the show would deal with life off the island from then on in.
They did deal with life off the island, then found they had to go back to the island again.
Then I thought this season would be about what happened between the day the Oceanic 6 left to the day Locke ended up dead, which would be the season finale. In the final season everyone returns to the island and wraps things up.
Now, with over a season and a half left they're already back on the island again!
Fuck if I know what's coming next. I love it!

I'm guessing that Kate gave the baby back to Claire. Think about it. She was clearly spooked and who else would Kate give the baby to and then not want to talk about it...ever. What would make her suddenly change her mind except for something so unexpected...something SO strange it would make her give Aaron back to someone. I'm guessing it'll be some creepy moment with Claire coming to Kate once more, except this time it won't be a dream.

Proxies on the plane:
Sun = herself
Kate = Claire (she's pregnant with Jack's baby)
Jack = himself
Locke's body = Jack's dad's body
Hugo = Himself + Charlie
Sayid = Kate
Sayid's "guest" = Kate's Federal Marshall
"I'm sorry about your friend" guy = Sayid
Stewardess = Stewardess from the Tailies
Ben = ???
Lapidus = Greg Grunberg pilot

See, that guy, I got a weird feeling from him. I don't think he's Sayids proxy. Sayid is still Sayid. I have a feeling his is just an unknown player in all of this so far.
