A poster on the Comic Book Resources Spider-Man forum posted some figures about X-Men/Spider-Man #3 (the Ben Reilly issue)

"Here's some good news, everybody!

The sales and marketshare numbers have been updated for January, and while there aren't any specific numbers available yet, the X-men/Spiderman #3 sold more than both #1 and #2 (not combined though).

Going by their index numbers, issue #1 got a 29.83, which ended up as 30,774 according to TheBeat. Issue #2 got a 27.36, which ended up as 25,573 according to TheBeat. Issue #3 got a 31.76!

I'm not sure how the numbers will end up, but if issue #2 lost over 5k readers after losing 2.47 points, and they just gained 1.93 readers compared to the initial issue... perhaps a total of around 35,000 is about right? This seems like pretty good news to me, even if it's not entirely internet-shattering as many of us were hoping."

All the different numbers made my eyes bleed but it looks like sales went up for the 3rd issue, right? It may not be a huge bump but I think it's pretty impressive that it possibly bucked the trend of sales decreasing with subsequent issues.

I'm not sure if it did in fact sell more, unfortunately. Lots of books seemed further up the charts this month, and I doubt the index (Batman) was as high with Dini as it was with Morrison. We'll see, I guess. Just don't want to get my hopes up.

Very good point.

it's pretty much impossible to tell whether a book's sales go a little bit up or down from these charts. it's only really useful for seeing which are the "big hits" and which aren't being noticed at all. anything in between is just a minefield.

You sure they're not counting the issues sold as X-Men: Manifest Destiny?:-P

Ben Reilly is never coming back.

Well that certainly doesn't sound like someone who so desperately wants Ben Reilly back, WHICH I KNOW YOU DO.

Well, I want to see Kaine as a Thunderbolt. The Spider-Reject request line starts here. Back of the line!

That would be awesome.

Why do you want Ben Reilly back? He was just Peter Parker with no wife and a lamer costume. Now you have a single Peter in the actual Spidey outfit. Ben Reilly would be even more redundant and unnecessary now than he was then.

Fuck that and fuck that a second time. Not that it's a bad idea, but Ben Reilly goes to the back of the line for no one.

I originally thought that the "Spider-Man" on Dark Avengers might be Kaine until I realized that Kaine hates Norman Osborn. That unfortunately rules out T-bolts membership too. Maybe Songbird will recruit him for her anti-Thunderbolts squad that I'm almost convinced Andy Diggle will get around to forming.

Is this a good news/bad news kinda deal where the bad news is that Ben Reilly is still dead? :)

That was just another failed clone that Osborn put in Reilly's place, Petey. Reilly isn't dead.

yeah, that was annoying the first time Ben Reilly showed up. okay, he's Peter's clone, but he was out there on his own for years, with a life very different than Peter's. that should've shone through more.

I believe he was totally necessary back then. We had a Spider-Man cast that was becoming totally unlikeable. Every other MJ arc had her smoking, flirting with another guy or getting stalked by some psycho. Peter was turning darker and going so far as to give up the Parker identity completely. The reintroduction of a clone who was Peter Parker at his best was very compelling and a reason I think many people took to the character even if they have mixed (or worse) feelings about the Clone Saga itself.

Having Reilly back now, while no longer serving the purpose of giving Peter a reason to 'chill out' and see the best of what he could be still offers up some interesting story ideas. Having someone like Marc DeMatteis tell the story of what it's like for a man who is living life as a copy of another man. His exploration of those themes would be enough to get me interested. You have enough of a background to Reilly's world through the Clone Saga and Lost Years where he could function on his own away from the Spider-Man books and still be interesting. Then there are the options of making him a bit of a darker character (he had a taste of what it was like to be the real guy and now is more jaded for knowing the truth) you could do the opposite of what was done in the 90s where now Reilly is the one who is settled down with a wife and kid.

In the hands of the right writer(s) I think there are still plenty of interesting story possibilities for the character
