On this episode of the Word Balloon podcast, we speak to writer Ed Brubaker, about his new series from Marvel’s ICON imprint, Incognito. We discuss the differences from Ed's other ICON series, Criminal.

"Incognito is a noir pulp story about a super villain hiding who he really is in a witness protection program, but he tires of trying to live a suppressed ‘ordinary life’... It's like when the film Goodfellas ended. I wanted to see what happens next, when the bad guy can't take his forced normal life anymore".

We talk about Ed's pulp influences for the story, and about the first issue's essay about the 1930's pulp hero The Shadow from Pulp Historian Jess Nevins. "Jess will be doing all the essays for this first story."

We also get a behind the scenes look at Ed's upcoming film Angel of Death staring Zoe Bell, Doug Jones, Ted Raimi, and Lucy Lawless. Before going to DVD, the film will be presented in webisodes for Crackle.com, Sony Pictures Entertainment's online video network, beginning in February.

Warning! This audio interview gets into some subject matters which may not be suitible for younger and more sensitive listeners.

Fun interview! The American Splendor appearance is hilarious.

And an unexpected place to find a RED reference.

For those more interested in this way cool digital film camera, check out the official website (http://www.red.com).

Although as Ed implies the camera is changing cinema and image-capture workflows and technology, one of its true innovations is that it's fairly accessible to the indie filmmaker.

Some friends of mine used it last summer on a short.

Here are some pics of the camera on their set if you're interested (http://www.testdayfilm.com/behindthescenes.html).

ciao,

great 'cast. i loved the first issue of incognito, i'd wanted to pick up something by the criminal creative team, having heard such great things about that project, but i didn't want to try and jump onto what seemed to be an expansive series - a self contained mini (with masks) by such acclaimed creators was irresistable and it delivered! guess i was the target audience :)

i'm dying to see the steranko pic that siuntres brought up...sounds really cool.

i think if you search around you'll find it, and tons of other steranko pulp images. here in chicago steranko shows up at the windy city pulp show every few years unannounced, buying a lot of crusty old magazines for inspiration (so does gerry conway)

nice! i love that style of art so much for these noir type of stories, i'm reading the new penguin editions of chandler at the moment and they tried to do a saul bass type thing with the overs, but it just feels like a pale imitation...

Loving this ep so far. It's funny to me though how he seemed surprised that they were able to get Ted Raimi (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001646/) for Angel of Death and that he thinks it was Zoe Bell who attracted him to the project. This is a guy who's credits include Bikini Squad (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106413/) and Tales From the Crapper (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0338479/). I know he's got some pretty hefty geek cred but I think if you offered him a sandwich he'd agree to appear in your film.

If I'm not mistaken, Soderbergh's Che project was the first major mainstream use of the Red One.

PS, excellent episode as always. Too bad that the majority of the mystery reader market hasn't latched on to Criminal yet. I hope it's only a matter of time.

i have been spending the last half hour looking online for the tarzan alive book that is illustrated by richard corbin and can't find a single reference to it...does anyone know which edition it is or have any links to any info on it?

i guess the idea of all the cock and ball ripping has me intrigued...

Finally listened to this. Great stuff, though Brubaker sounds like he's on a drug. Lots of laughing. ;)

BTW Bill and Ted's Sexellent Adventure is real. It's a gay porn. Won't link it due to rules (and good taste)
