With the Dark Reign story arc, it's a new year and fans are seeing a new direction for the Avengers titles and the entire Marvel Universe. On this edition of the Word Balloon podcast , we sit down with Dark Reign's creator Brian Michael Bendis for another edition of the Bendis Tapes, as he takes fan questions posted at Brian's Jinxworld.com message board.

Also with a special cameo appearance, David Mack joins us to discuss his work on a Philip K Dick comic adaptation, the next steps for Kabuki, and behind the scenes details of his co-writing project with Bendis, Daredevil:End Of Days.

I just wanted to thank you guys. I downloaded it this morning and been hearing it on the train ride to work into the heart of the Big Apple. Hoping to meet you at NYCC this year John. Keep it up.

I lose a little respect for anyone who's aware of but never bothered to watch the greatest show ever to air on the small screen.

Bendis mentioned it this time, but you have hinted at it before as well. What is it that you look for in comics journalism. Is there a missing element? Is it just the flood of opinions, speculation and shallow reviews that you don't like? Describe the site that you would read.

don't forget print...

i haven't read wizard magazine in a long time. the two morrows mags have great q&a interviews. I read The comics journal when there are features i'm interested in, but that $9.99 price is way too high for a magazine IMO.

i read newsarama and CBR daily. I used to read jen contino at the pulse daily too, but i think she's running an almost one woman show over there, and it seemed to lag behind the other 2 as far as news goes.

there are a lot of shallow reviewers out there , but i mostly ignore them.

to me, there are very few actual comic book journalists out there, and I don't consider what I do journalisim either.

like blogging, it seems almost anyone can do it, and i think most of what passes as news stories are just a pack of fans, re-writting press releases, sprinkled with a little of their opinions, or a slanted q&a e-mail conversation.

BTW, spoilers are the dumbest thing to put in any real journalistic piece.
How many legit film critics actually spoil the key plot twists of the movies they cover?

Vaneta Rogers is a good reporter, who has my respect and geuine admiration as a talented writer. I've seen her in action for a couple of years now and I always feel like I'm watching Lois Lane.

Heidi McDonald, and Tom Spurgeon are good too. I read Rich Johnson's stuff every week, but it is what he calls it, a gossip column.

Augie De Blieck's Pipeline is solid, and I love Steven Grant's Permanent Damage. Ethan Van Sciver and Keith Giffen make me laugh, when they write articles.

I'm sure there are a couple of others , but not many more.

Couldn't agree more. People who do that expose their lack of understanding of what journalism is all about. I've spent 10 years working in various newsrooms and when it come so reviews or features, not blowing key points of the show/movie/book in question is pretty much 101. People who don't get that, well, they just don't get it!

Whoo hoo! First question: Tape Two!

JOHN: Wait a minute, I can do this!

Well, I did a six page story based on Bendis' worst pitch, as mentioned on the podcast:

PAGE 1 (http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b301/kyle_latino/bendispitch-1.jpg)

PAGE 2 (http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b301/kyle_latino/bendispitch-2.jpg)

PAGE 3 (http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b301/kyle_latino/bendispitch-3.jpg)

PAGE 4 (http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b301/kyle_latino/bendispitch-4.jpg)

PAGE 5 (http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b301/kyle_latino/bendispitch-5.jpg)

PAGE 6 (http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b301/kyle_latino/bendispitch-6.jpg)

Now I'll just wait for Mr. Bendis to write the dialogue, like he said he'd do... Haha. He didn't think I'd do it.

It can never be said enough: I love The Bendis Tapes. I only wish that other creative people I am fans of would open themselves up to questioning to these type of interviews. The tone is fun without pandering. It's good fun all around. On a technical note, they sound much better than they used to.

I just downloaded this and I'm listening right now ("in one mile, turn left"). I was furious that Bendis said that there's nothing to play on PS3. I hope that I can get in on a future Bendis tapes to address this- if I remember to do so.

Basically, I would like to scream at him through text, and put it in the form of a question.

You secretly work for Sony, don't you?

But I have enjoyed playing games on the PS3, though I'm not sure any of what I played was exclusive.

hey, if you haven't recorded part 4 yet, you should throw a few questions on the end of it about the nycc announcements.

also, this might be my favorite of the bendis tapes.

i know ... i was referring to bendis' comment.... i know that it was just friendly ribbing though :] I'm pretty sure Deadpool/Agent X was her first mainstream superhero foray(?)
