Hello,
I think a lot of you guys have these. How do you like them. I finally got the go ahead from my other half to take over half the office. I was thinking of doing a wall of these since funds and tight and they seem reasonable.

Are they Sturdy?
Will they hold two or three FS per shelf? Regular FS not Juggernaut or Apocalypse
How Dusty do they get?
Does the glass door seal tight or close to it?

Any help would be great.
Thanks Chris

i have 3 & am pleased. since you assemble them yrself, their sturdiness depends a bit on you. yes, they'll hold 2-3 fs statues per shelf. their max weight is ~13lb/shelf. some really hard-core collectors will double up the glass to hold more weight. there are very strong magnets at the top & btm of the doorway. i took out the btm ones b/c the "kickback" would shimmy the whole thing each time i opened it. they keep the dust out pretty successfully.

No, they are not sturdy IMO. I realized I had several hundred dollars of Bowen stuff in a $60 case, and got rid of my 2. The 3 glass sides are the only support for the whole cabinet. Its literally designed so the top and bottom are pulled together to hold the glass sides in. I ended up getting a few BILLY bookcases, with the optional glass doors, and lights. Much better IMO, and I don't freak out like I did when the Detolfs wobbled.

They're a little smaller inside, but 150% sturdier.

I wouldnt use the Deltofs. I think it was a user named Rafter at Statueforum that had Deltofs that fell apart on him. The pictures were scary!

Try this place. I have Detlofs and they are ok, but sooner or later I am going to switch to these. Look for the cubes.

that was because he put one of them together incorrectly, if it is the same person...should be, as I only know of 1 person ever having a problem with them.

I have 6 of them, and they are great!! :)

I have eight of them, and I have no inclination to buy anything but detolfs. They are completely sturdy, and I am 100 percent happy with them. Plus, they're a huge bargain.

I've had lots of detolfs for a long time and i've never had a problem. If built inccorectly though, I could see how someone could have problems

Hey Guys,
Thanks for all the information. I think I'll head to Ikea and check them out in person. Once I get everything set up. I'll post pictures.
Thanks again
Chris

Here's one of mine:

I've looked at the Billy cases a number of times. The only limitation I see is that when matching the door frame to the cabinet (i.e. wood frame), when closed, the door frame obstructs part of the viewing area.

The other option would be to get Billy glass door with metal frame (frame is only ~1/4") - the downside of that is still (for me) since I would be getting 30" wide bookcases, and the doors being only 1/2 that width, I will still have a line that cuts my display in half, thereby limiting how I may choose to configure the pieces so that they can be seen in all of their glory with doors closed.

I have one Detolf integrated into my overall display and have had no problems with it, though I'll admit that I would be willing to pay more for something that is: 1) sturdier; 2) more airtight; 3) wider, and; 4) adjustable shelf height.

Oh yeah, Deltofs look better and have more display room, but when those things used to wobble, my heart would stop. If I could find a affordable wooden display case with a glass door and more display room, I'd be all over it, but for now I don't have to worry about shattering thousands of dollars worth of Bowen statues.

And I think they look pretty good with the doors closed

Nope, Rafter's collapse was a custom-built cabinet. There was another user who posted about an IKEA Detolf collapse on SF, but after taking a look at his photos, it was determined that they had built them incorrectly.

I've yet to read a story about a Detolf collapse that wasn't due to either incorrect construction or grossly overloading a shelf.

I have 2 Detolfs, but I keep searching for the perfect display,
I dont like the bottom shelves of the detolfs theyre like a wasted display for the statues.

I agree with this. If built right Detolfs are really secure. The only way I could see them breaking is if someone put WAY too much weight on the shelves (I mean way too much because the shelves hold a lot of weight, so you'd REALLY have to load it up to break it) or if someone built them with the rods facing out instead of in (this will cause the glass to not have a steady foundation and will pretty much guarantee destruction...but you'd have to be REALLY STUPID to build it like that....REALLY STUPID!)

I have one of those cubes and their okay if you don't mind dusting off your stuff every once and awhile. The tabs that connect the glass panels form a space between each panel allowing for dust and dirt to get in.

Detolfs let a bit of dust in too. Still looking for the perfect case.

I didn't know that. That sucks! Sounds like a custom cabinet job is needed.

i would consider it a negligible amount; it's no chore to dust off the insides every few weeks.

yeah--right after i first put them up, the occasional <klonk> as one of glass shelves vibrated against one of the walls would give me a heart attack.

they are pretty stable, though. and each shelf does hold ~13 lb, so it's good for easily 3 FS/shelf, unless they're really huge or heavy.

i haven't seen--short of gonzo custom rooms--a cheaper & more effective way to display these easily & safely.

the cubes get really pricey if you elect for bigger than 12x12 & they don't have a front to keep out dust; more "furniture-y" cases obstruct too much, imo, or don't give the statues room enough for interesting displays (shelves are too shallow, too close together, etc).

there're a few diff't collections that have been posted here & other places. i think a collector called "TigerTank" has a GREAT set-up using detolfs as well as other cases, that includes comics covers in a great, effective way, too.
