1. Holy fucking hell, Total Sell Out by our own Bendis is freaking hilarious and awesome and so needs to be read by everybody....and I'm barely half through it. I'm tempted to start a thread if I knew it wouldn't be derailed soon after. Bendis needs to do more of this. Even if it means replacing himself as the central character with a pudgy, balding Wolverine.

2. I finally finally found my copy of Pavement's Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain. Damn I miss how amazing that album is, listening through it from start to finish. Really, this should be considered their greatest contribution to the tapestry of music.

Well, even if you have to get it through the library, read it. So great.
Out of his self-contained independent stuff I've read, I'd go:
Torso
Total Sell Out
Goldfish
Jinx
Fortune and Glory

Though it's tough to put Goldfish at 3. Kind of like 2A and 2B.

I think that's more in regards to Fortune & Glory. The movie biz is central to that. Total Sell Out is short episodic comics he's collected and pieces about a younger aspiring-to-break-in Bendis. Another Fortune & Glory would be perfect. I just don't know if he could replicate Total Sell Out without feeling like he's gone back to the well one too many times.

I'm not saying it's not an apt comparison, it's just a weak crutch to fall back on. Every band and their fucking mother claims to be influenced by Pet Sounds. Comparing them to The Beach Boys is fine, (e.g. layered harmonies ala the Four Freshmen, lots of different instruments.)

Grateful Dead. Not really in sound so much, but in spirit, since Animal Collective did Salvia in the desert before recording Strawberry Jam.

The Beach Boys thing can work, I just find it hackneyed and trite when so many reviews compare a record to Pet Sounds.

EDIT: The Flaming Lips and The Residents.

The study of geography isn't really capitals and African countries and shit. There are two major fields. Natural Geography and Human Geography. Natural geography is the distribution of natural...stuff: landforms, volcanoes, climates, atmospheric fronts, caves, ecology. It's asks how was this volcano made, what features caused it to form here, and how is it related to other volcanoes. Human geography is the study of the migration of people, the dispersal of ideas, culture, religion, political structures, urbanization, globalization, and resource management. Ya dig?

It is specificly dealing with the spatial distribution of features and factors. You are right in stating that it very much an inter-disciplinary major. What usually happens is that you get a base degree in Geography and then go to Grad school and have a narrow focus. A geologist may be interested in how a land form was made. A geomorphology geographer would wonder how the land form was made and how that compares to other landforms in the region, continent, and world. One particular key term is Geographic Information Systems (GIS). GIS is essentially a multi-layered map. These multi-layered maps illustrate the connectivity between factors that you are studying.

Here's an example:
http://tcla.gseis.ucla.edu/rights/features/3/maps/images/cred_map.jpg

This map shows the potential relationship between income distribution and uncredentialed teachers.

Spatial distribution and the reasons for it are the fundamentals of geography.

Maps?

Kinda but we also look at things like this

http://www.uni.edu/gai/India/India_Lesson_Plans/India_Population_Pyramids_files/image002.gif

This lets us look at the distribution of age groups in populations in different countries and what ramifications it will have. For example consider labor. In Kenya, rapid population growth means that a large population will enter the job market creating more competitions for job which could help spur the economy by making more specialized jobs. At the same time it could mean that there will be large amount of disagreement over resources and possibly widespread unemployment. Slowed growth in the Unite States illustrates that the baby boomers had less kids then their parents, perhaps because more and more women entered the work force. Negative population growth can suggest a few things: war losses in Germany prevented a large baby boom unlike in the USA, women have entered the workforce, and in years to come there may be too few workers to support the needed health and social care for retired individuals some have theorized the case will be for social security and the USA

By uncredentialed teachers you mean people who don't have a degree or what?

Yes and no. Here is a good quote from a piece about California:

Five years ago, the state reduced elementary class sizes, creating an instant teacher shortage. Policy-makers took the easy way out, eliminating the requirement that one hold a credential before beginning to teach. The new system allows you to pass a skills test, promise to begin a training program and begin teaching without an iota of preparation.

So teacher's used to have had certain training benchmarks before they could teach but due to a shortage many lawmakers circumvented these restriction allowing uncredentialed teachers to be hired often times at a cheaper price. Study after study has illustrate that this is a terrible idea. I think something like 85% of all uncredentialed teacher teach in urban areas- the very areas that need good, strong, skilled teachers the most.

My birthday is on Saturday. The last time I saw my brother when he was still healthy and normal was the night before my birthday last year. Just having a really hard time thinking on it.

I find almost all holidays, birthdays and anniversary dates of special past times depressing as they cause me to remember too much of what I've lost. It takes a lot of effort to enjoy them. I know that doesn't help but at least you maybe know you're not alone feeling this way.

Oh wow. I don't know if you all remember this but a few weeks ago I applied for an internship at White House with the Council of Environmental Quality. The head of the council is the top adviser to President Obama on the environment. Anyway I was sure that the positions had all been filled but today I go this email:
Thank you for your interest. We have been absolutely swamped with
emails during the first few weeks of the administration. Are you still
interested in the internship and/or would you be available for the
summer. What hours would you be able to work? Thanks.

So Sean Hannity really knows how to spin something.

He played Obama saying the US doesn't torture and then goes on to say there's a report disagreeing with Obama saying that Gitmo people are being handled worse because it's getting closed down. He then disputes that report saying he's interviewed a lot of people and he doesn't believe that happened.

So to recap:

Saw Cadillac records at the Union. Pretty entertaining. Only thing I disliked was the screwed up timeline. They had Muddy Waters meeting The Rolling Stones before Chuck Berry got out of prison marvelling at Elvis, who was a contemporary of his. Not to mention Surfin' U.S.A. being played on the radio before he got arrested at the end of the 50s. The Beach Boys weren't around until the early 60s. Oy.

I bought a new laptop last night! Here's a picture of me trying to figure out how to use the webcam, from earlier today.

This Italian restaurant that's owned by a friend of my folks. Was delicious but I either ate too much or too fast.

Played a bit of FEAR 2 tonight. Was one of my B-day presents along with Star Ocean 4. Holy crap that game is freaky. It's got almost a Silent Hill vibe to it, though not quite as scary as that.
