Essentaly, Geoff Johns is an unofficial editor at DC. His new job (in addition to all his normal writing) is to make sure that all the Infinite Crisis books make sense together. The story flows naturaly from book to book, the characters act the same, ect.
I've got two thoughts.
A) Good for Geoff. He's getting paid extra money to be a geek.
B) How fucking big and inpentrable is Infinite Crisis going to be if DC NEEDS TO PAY SOMEONE TO MAKE SURE THEY ALL WORK TOGETHER?!?!?!? :x

B) You'd be surprised how easy it is for comics to NOT make sense together. How much sense to just the Spidey books make together? Oh, letmesee... NONE.

Exactly. So it doesn't matter that I read ASM and not MK Spidey. Now, becasue I read The Flash, I gotta read Manhunter? This is why I hate crossovers.

It keeps everyone on the same page so that each book isnt connected per say but continuity fits.

Meanwhile, I think you're blowing it out of proportion.
This has nothing to do with a net of necessary reading. This is just a tool of consistency to make sure that anyone checking out what's going on elsewhere, won't have anything contradicted.
And you know how those fanboys bitch about characterizations.
Now there's one watching writer who can just make sure no one's having illogical mood swings.
Now, let's talk about House of M...

Also: if it's unofficial, I very much doubt he's getting a pay raise.

really, there is no one better for that job... Johns has wrangled the continuity for some of the longest running characters in the DCU very well, after all...

yeah this doesnt mean that more titles will be essential to read- just that all titles will be operating 100% in the same universe with the same rules, events, etc. and its very welcome news. part of the appeal to infinite crisis is how everything is tied together and makes sense throughout the universe.
