CHICAGO – Gov. Rod Blagojevich has defied U.S. Senate leaders and his own state's lawmakers by appointing former Illinois Attorney General Roland Burris to replace President-elect Barack Obama in the U.S. Senate. Blagojevich announced his decision in Chicago on Tuesday with the 71-year-old Burris at his side.
The governor praised Burris' integrity and said he hopes that the allegations against him don't "taint this good and honest man."
Burris says he's eager to get to work in Washington. He says he's proud of his accomplishments and vowed to uphold the integrity of the office.
Burris says he has no connection to the charges against Blagojevich, who was arrested on Dec. 9 and accused of trying to profit from appointing Obama's replacement.
Burris was the first African-American elected to major statewide office. He's served as Illinois' comptroller and ran for governor three times — the last time losing to Blagojevich.
Guy's got brass balls I'll give him that.

Well, he's already said "fuck you!" to everyone with that goofy "I Will Fight" press conference from last week. And nobody currently in politics was going to touch this/him with a ten-mile pole. So I'd have to say that appointing Burris is a pretty shrewd move. It's part of the "fight" and Burris has been so far removed that he can only hope to turn this in his favor.

Agreed. When the story first broke and I was told this guy was caught straight-up selling the appointment, my first thought was "How did he possibly expect to get away with that? He must be stupid/crazy." And then everything from/about him I've heard since then has just kind of confirmed this notion.

the illinois state senate and illinois secretary of state have to certify and approve whoever he nominated (according to an article on yahoo) and both have come out and said "fucking kidding me?"
He doesn't think he'll get away with anything, because more than likely he believes that he is truly innocent and seems himself as the victim of unfair persecution. It's always most satisfying to see criminals take a fall when they sincerely don't think they have done anything wrong.
I'll bet you that he has absolutely no moral qualms about selling a Senate seat whatsoever. He probably even sees it as his right as the elected governor of Illinois.

While I agree that he probably sees himself as the victim of unfair persecution, I have a hard time believing that he actually thinks he's innocent of the charges.

Agreed. George W. Bush was fairly harmless as Texas Governor.
Now, New Jersey's last few were pretty trainwrecky, but I think even Jim McGreevey isn't as bad as Blago.

I don't know if anything ever stuck, but Bush was certainly rumored to have been dealing in some land scams with his old Texas Ranger partners. And I read somewhere where the bulk of his initial fortune was the result of a tax subsidy on the new stadium deal. There certainly isn't anything illegal about owners holding teams hostage for new stadiums and tax breaks, but there definitely should be.

You might want to look at Kay Bailey for those scams.
and its more than the owners that hold the cities hostage. It's the NFL, MLB, etc who help to do this.

really? George was very good to citizens here. He protected us against these criminal insurance companies, held companies like Enron in check, etc.
Rick Perry came and just had friends in his staff and cabinet. That has led us to have bad consumer protection laws, less teacher benefits, etc.

I find it hilarious how Burris is so super-duper-enthusiastic in the interviews I've seen. He's acting like there's no problems or any controversy at all hanging over this. He's acting like; "Controversy? What Controversy? It's all good!"

I think he thought he get away with it because he believes that such behavior is common-place. That being the idea that Governor's, and other Government officials regularly accept bribes in exchange for high level Government appointments.
Whether or not he is correct in that believe, I cannot say but I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if its true.
But he got caught, and he now has to pay the price. When a cop pulls you over 'cause you're going 75 mph in a 65 mph zone the cop isn't going to give a shit when you say "Look at that dude that just went by, he's goin' damn near 90!"

Doubtful.
The delicious irony is that in his first or second year in office he implemented mandatory annual ethics training for state employees.

When McGreevy left office, the Star-Ledger had a great timeline of all the scandals and corruption in his short administration. Two fullsize newspaper pages. Started with parking tickets and ended with gay sex. Gotta love it.

Something I just found out, Bobby Rush who played the 'race card' in regards to Burris, didn't even endorse Barack Obama in the 2004 Senate race. He endorsed the white millionaire Blair Hull.
Rush needs to sit down and shut the fuck up.
