View Full Version : Midwest Snow-a-thon

I finished blowing out the driveway about 15 minutes ago so the wife could leave for work, and the only thing keeping a stretch of it clean right now is the wind. The sidewalk to the front door, which I did last before coming in, is almost completely recovered, too.

Anyone got a fun story?

Did you have precipitation yesterday?

Yes, in the form of light freezing rain. But the new stretch of interstate opened and no problems for us!

Actually I want a good snow, I just haven't seen a hardcore snow here since 1983.

there is about a quarter inch of ice on the car that I really dont want to mess with.

Brewtown Andy

Inexplicably, there's still a clear patch on the driveway. Right out in the middle.

Did they finally open all of 40-61? That's good to know. It was getting annoying taking 70 to 170 all the time.

All the snow's gone here. Makes me feel like an idiot for scraping my walk way yesterday. :-?

we got 11 inches last weekend combined with wind gusting up to 40-50 mph that created 3-4 foot high drifts that were 3-15 feet long.

and i had to shovel the 9 front walks for our townhouse complex.

oh, and it was 45 below with windchill.

the whole city was shut down all day sunday and the interstates were closed from canada to iowa and montana to minnesota.

I woke up at 5 and was back inside by 5:50 after clearing my 2 car width, 3 car length driveway. That also includes shoveling the first 3 feet by the garage to give me space to move the blower and shoveling the sidewalk to the front door. And I was only going down the driveway, as I decided walking into the wind was for suckers.

do you like it?It's way better than all the fucking shoveling I did last year. :D Actual conversation the wife and I had last year, after the first snow of the year was a nasty one like today:

"Andy, do we want to get a snowblower?"
"Eh, maybe we'll get another one like that this winter. It's not a big deal."

After it became one of the 10 snowiest winters ever recorded, I actually felt less stupid. When it became the snowiest winter in 120 years, I felt even better. Sore, but better. :D

Yeah, I like it. I don't use the electric starter, but that has more to do with the fact that the outlets in my garage are poorly placed to get it plugged in with both cars in there. But the ripcord starter works nice and smooth, so it's not a big deal. I had to take the speed down to the lowest setting to stop the auger from chugging today, but usually I only have on 2 anyway.

The clear patch is finally filled in.

I'm going to take another pass at the driveway after 2pm, as the wife gets off from work at 3.

right now I have an ariens that is about 25 years old, the transmission is out of it so I have to push it around in neutral and it only throws the snow about 2 feet. its a real piece of shit. to start it i have to squirt starter fluid into the sparkplug hole to get it to ignite properly. also I cant move the choke or set the speed too low or it dies/backfires...all of that. I'm going to push it out into the middle of the street and leave it there after i get a new one.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ARIENS-TROY-BILT-MTD-YARD-MAN-SNOWTHROWER-HEADLIGHT_W0QQitemZ290186960027QQcmdZViewItemOk, I went and looked at the area where the headlight is on the 26" model, which is just flat plastic on mine. Behind the flat plastic is what appears to be a mount for adding a headlight. The flat plastic doesn't appear to be removable in any way, and I didn't immediately see how you'd wire it into the engine.

everything is canceled here too schoolwiseMarquette doesn't like closing, because at worst, 85% of the students are within 7 blocks of their classes, so it's just a matter of the profs for the 8, 9, 10 am classes getting there, and that's not even all of them every day.

not the midwest, but we've actually had a heavy amount of snow for this area over the past week. (6 inches in some spots, where we usually get, at most a couple of inches over the course of a year.)

wouldn't be a problem except the cities around here aren't prepared (limited salt and plows for roads), the people don't know how to drive in the shit, and the cities are hilly as fuck.

has made for a fun commute the last few days!

greg donovan
