Apparently, someone took it seriously. Post from a friend:

As he was telling me what went wrong he started telling me what he did to fix it which was to disassemble the harddrive. Standing there looking in absolute horror as he told me he went on the internet and printed out a tutorial on how to clean a harddrive which included totally disassembling the drive, brushing all the parts with a toothbrush, flossing the platters with floss and then putting all the parts in the dishwasher. I kept looking at him fully expecting him to say "Nah, I'm just joking you." He wasn't, he also went on to say he REALLY needed that data off the drive.

My dad once inserted and jammed an install CD into a printer because it said to "insert disc now".

I once told someone on the original xbox forums that his disc wouldnt play in the console because his laser reader was misaligned. I told him to turn the console upside down, fire it up and play it that way. I was banned shortly thereafter, so I guess he fell for it.

Dude my PS1 only worked like that for its final few months of life..

Nope. I think I read in a gaming magazine that playing a PS1 upside down was a solution if there problems with the disc being read.
