Gonna be a bunch of trades for people this year, and thought I'd check and see if there were any out of the box ideas here. I'm already gonna get some Captain America and Action Comics: Legion of Superheroes (of all things--way to go Johns) for people, but suggestions both Marvel/DC and indie are welcome! Basically, a good trade or HC, especially something new to this year.

I'm unfamiliar with all of those except Ex Machina. Which is your favorite? Might buy one of 'em for myself to check out.

Oh man. My favorite?

Well, they're all great. But if I had to pick one favorite I'd pick Berlin.

I'm giving the Gotham Central HC.

Now that's a mighty fine gift. Does it have the Joker story in it? That and the Bullock story were my faves.

It's about an alcoholic. The story follows the protagonist Jonathan A. through his trials and tribulations of drinking. It presents the messed up situations he finds himself in, the compulsion he has to keep continuing his pattern of behaviour, and his interpersonal relationships, especially with his great aunt.

It is funny, tender, and heartbreaking all at the same time. I appreciate the work, as someone who has been affected by the disease of alcoholism throughout my life, as it reflects a nuanced approach to the individual and to the disease.

Make no mistake, it's not an easy read- at least it wasn't for me- but it's worthwhile.

Isn't it rather...well...autobiographical as well?

I requested the Marvel Boy HC and the Joker OGN, but I guess I can't really recommend since I've yet to read them.

That is a logical conclusion, yes.

I'm telling you guys:

Bottomless Belly-Button. It's 720 pages long.

It's like the new Blankets or whatever the current cool "indie" comic is. (not mocking indie comics  but the overwhelming one-time exhuberance over Blankets)

I need to head to the comic store this weekend to see what I can pick up for my friends and my dad. Probably something Batman for one friend, something Superman for another, and maybe something Vertigo for another.

Yeah, DC fucked up ROYALLY on the Gotham Central trades...#11, 16-18, 26-27, and 31 were NEVER reprinted, yet they bothered to reprint random No Man's Land stories from BATMAN CHRONICLES #16 and DETECTIVE COMICS #747 instead.

Fucking awful.

Lucky me, I have all 40 in monthlies.

Great to know. I got it for my sister, sight unseen because she loves Tori. I saw the cover and it looks fantastic. I am hoping that she loves it.

I am gifting Y The Last Man Deluxe Edition Book 1 for a couple of friends who are currently on the fence about comics. I bought the first Runaways digest for my girlfriend a couple years ago and now she's more open to reading comics. I swear, BKV is comic book marijuana.

I think the driving force behind that that was Rucka, who I believe I recall saying a few years ago that not every story needs to be collected. I think part of it was about focusing on the stories Lark drew, but that fell apart towards the end of the series.

But at the same time, you lose out on a bunch of great stories, including the Greg Rucka one-off about Poison Ivy.

I don't know why they'd do something like that to their own book...

Oh, not exactly a comic book but this is the best Christmas present I received. There are several moments where I flip through the book and say "The hell? _______ drew this?"
