saw cadillac records tonight. it was the best r/b-rock history film i've seen in decades .

the music felt genuine, and all the acting was great top 2 bottom. i am now convinced jeffery wright can play any role. adrian brody was his usual great self as leonard chess, and beyonce continues to grow as an actress. just an amazing film

I was amazed by Jeffery Wright when I saw him in... it was either Casino Royale or Syriana... but I was blown away, because the only other thing I'd seen him in before that was Shaft.

Not... at ALL... what I'd expected. The man's got skills.

Synecdoche, NY is one of the best filmgoing experiences I've had in a long time.

Seems really interesting from what I've heard, I gotta go see it.

It's incredibly complex and I want to see it again, having finally figured out things near the end of the film that would've helped at the beginning.

It's main problem is it is too intelligent for its own good and can quickly alienate its audience.

it's on my list too.

Being a blues fan I've been looking forward to Cadillac Records for some time but unfortunately it hasn't been playing at our local theater.

You're all right though, Jeffry Wright is a freak of nature chameleon of an actor. I'm guessing you've seen more of his movies than you realize.

Wright was spectacular as the flamboyant Belize in the Angels of America mini-series.

Been on a movie rampage lately (the wife and daughter have been out of town and I've had days off of work).

Slumdog Millionaire - What a great movie. I always underestimate Danny Boyle because he has no real consistent style but the guy delivers every time. The structure of the story is really clever and I *LOVE* what he does with the subtitles when they appear in the movie (although I was a bit confused as to why he used subtitles for some parts of the movies and english for others). I'd highly reccomend this to anyone I know.

Milk - Another great one. I think Penn's performance was pretty damn good and I liked that they made him out to be kind of a prick even though he was a hero to his community. Gonna try to watch the doc on line this weekend.

Benjamin Button - A great movie I never need to see again. 3 hours of people dying. Also notable for being the first (I think) film to star both Cate Blanchet and Tilda Swinton (the poor man's Cate Blanchet).

The Spirit - I love Frank Miller but his is as bad as everyone says it is. Macht is good but not good enough to save any part of this movie.

Valkyrie - Another good one.

Seven Pounds - A little confusing but there's payoff at the end. Uplifitng and depressing at the same time.

Tilda Swinton (the poor man's Cate Blanchet).

:furious:

I am going to have to assume you've never seen Orlando. Tilda Swinton is five times the actor Blanchet is.

yeah, i see the resemblance, but tilda has proven herself...
that said, i wouldn't shit on cate, who is also a fine actress

It's possible. I don't actually care much for either one but Tilda Swinton is the actress people hire when they can't afford Blanchet.

Yeah, I was exaggerating...

I ought to have said that they are equally excellent talent and when it comes down to it rather different, as well, but that Swinton has rarely received the measure of acclaim that ought to be afforded to her. Then again, much of her early Hollywood carreer was mired by being involved with some rather bad films whereas Blanchett has had better luck in that regard.

See, that's only been true of her Hollywood career and she's been around a lot longer than Blanchett. I guess I'm trying to challenge that type of pigeon-hole because Swinton deserve to once again be considered as an incredibly singular actress.

Benjamin Button was fantastic. The way it dealt with life and death and the passage of time were really fascinating to watch.

I also really enjoyed Valkyrie. I was surprised by how suspenseful it was for already knowing how it all ended. Tom Cruise was really just a supporting actor, good ensemble cast.

I saw Frost/Nixon a week ago. Great movie. At first I thought why the hell would anyone write a play about something that you actually can pick up a tape and watch but while watching the movie I understood what he was doing. It's a great movie and phenomenal acting by Langella.

If you ever liked wrestling, or just love good movies, you must go see The Wrestler. It was so heartbreaking and personal. I'm not sure how widely released this is yet, but it is more than worth the wait!

Finally saw it Monday, and yes it was outstanding. Very authentic.

Yes, it's a quiet little film but very nicely done. And frankly all the more so because it was helmed by Ron Howard (who hasn't done anything I've liked since Apollo 13).

Has anyone here seen The Reader? If so, what'd you think?
I was unimpressed by the trailer, but after all the Oscar nominations, I was thinking of checking it out.

brendan gleason is kicking ass as churchill in hbo's "into the storm" as good as albert finney's turn in the previous hbo pic "the gathering storm" .

i'm guessing there will be a 3rd film, focusing on the post war years.
