December 9, 2008 - RPG fans, you might want to sit down for this one.

Square Enix held a surprise press conference in Tokyo on Wednesday and with Nintendo president Satoru Iwata in attendance revealed that the hotly anticipated Dragon Quest 9 will be coming to DS on March 28 in Japan for 5980 yen ($64 USD).

By far the bigger news, however, is that that Square Enix and Nintendo announced that Dragon Quest 10 is being developed for Wii. No details on the project were given.

According to a live blog by the site Gemaga, DQ creator Yuji Horii took the stage and made the announcement. Afterward, Iwata was quoted as saying, "Thank you very much for announcing Dragon Quest X for Wii." A Reuters story later confirmed the news.

The Dragon Quest series is extremely popular in Japan, each update selling millions of copies. This latest announcement is sure to generate continued appeal for Nintendo's already popular console in the homeland.

Wow. While the series has never been big here, this is gigantic for Nintendo. Seriously, I'm shocked.

Next year is going to be huge for the Wii. This probably won't make '09, but considering the massive amount of big exclusives, it's okay to start stocking up for 2010. :)

I'd be very surprised if DQ10 shows up next year. The Japanese government might shutdown Square Enix for releasing 2 games in one year. It would be complete anarchy :) Unless its further along then they are saying, I'd say mid 2010, early 2011 at the earliest.

Ha, very true.

Bold move on Square-Enix's part, I must say.

Hmmm that's pretty crazy. It'll probably sell about 122222233335555550000cat44222000045666996069999999 99695595949393 copies in Japan.

Edit - Give or take.

I don't know how huge this will be. DQ VIII sold under 5 million worldwide. And that was on a system with an installed base 4 times what the Wii has right now.

Dragon Quest feels so old-fashioned after playing Final Fantasy.

That's because it is. As heavily as Final Fantasy can adhere to convention, the series still looks like an endless well of innovation next to Dragon Quest. Dragon Quest encapsulates JRPG insularity more completely than any other franchise.

I'm sure this will move millions of Wiis in Japan, but I have absolutely no interest. That said, this is still incredibly bad news for JRPG fans who own 360s and/or PS3s, since it's going to drive nearly all JRPG development for this generation onto Nintendo hardware. The best thing you can do now is embrace BioWare (sorry, PS3 owners) and Bethesda.

Don't feel bad for us ;)

The company that owns BioWare, Elevation Partners, is an investment group. They purchase, invest to increase value and then resell their acquisitions. The rumors that BioWare is working on a PS3 title are true. BioWare's bosses, Doctors Ray Muzkya and Greg Zeschuk told 1UP that they were working on all next-gen platforms, in addition to the previously announced Nintendo DS team. Until now, BioWare has shipped games primarily on the PC and Microsoft platforms, is their work on a PlayStation 3 game part of a plan to press Microsoft into opening their wallet and acquiring the studio from Elevation?

The options seem clear.

1) Buy a wii
1. b) Buy Dragon Quest

2) Do not buy a wii
2. b) Do not play Dragon Quest
2. c) Get your mind wiped to forget you ever liked the series. Forget your family and your home, pick up and move to Guam. Work in a hotel and go by the name of Pedro.

The PSP uses a 333 MHz MIPS R4000 (32-bit) CPU, a GPU with 2 MB onboard VRAM running at 166 MHz, and includes 32 MB main RAM and 4 MB embedded DRAM.[92][5] The CPU was originally locked to run slower than the hardware was capable of and most games ran at 222 MHz.[93] However, with firmware update 3.50 on May 31, 2007, Sony removed this limit and allowed new games to run at a full 333 MHz.[94]

Processors:

* CPU: PowerPC-based "Broadway" processor, made with a 90 nm SOI CMOS process, reportedly†clocked at 729 MHz[82]
* GPU: ATI "Hollywood" GPU made with a 90 nm CMOS process,[83] reportedly†clocked at 243 MHz[82]

Memory:

* 88 MB main memory (24 MB "internal" 1T-SRAM integrated into graphics package, 64 MB "external" GDDR3 SDRAM)[84]
* 3 MB embedded GPU texture memory and framebuffer.
Storage:

* 512 MB built-in NAND flash memory
* Expanded storage via SD card memory (up to 2 GB)
* Nintendo GameCube Memory Card (required for GameCube game saves)

IBM's Wii "Broadway" CPU
ATI's Wii "Hollywood" GPU

* Slot-loading disc drive compatible with 8 cm Nintendo GameCube Game Disc and 12 cm Wii Optical Disc
* Mask ROM by Macronix[87]

True.

Still, about the pics you posted, that's because of lazy developers mostly. I think the Wii is actually quite a bit more powerful than the GC (didn't the High Voltage guys say this? Or the Factor 5 guys? Can't remember), it's just that most developers want to take the easy route since it's so similar to the GC.

It's possible, but like I said it's the same game by the same developers on the two systems. And this is all about if Tenchu for the PSP will likely be close to Tenchu on the Wii. Which is a distinct possibility.

Dude, Alien Syndrome is an awful example. It's a crap game. If you really want to make a strong case, take the Wii's best looking game and compare it to the PSP's.

Besides, I've seen Tenchu 4 on Wii, and it looks good.

A- They made it look pretty good on PSP, so crap game or not, it can look halfway decent,

B-That won't the same game, so art style, artistic vision etc will be totally different. Making a comparison difficult. But whatever, I'll bite. What would you say are the 3 games with the best graphics on Wii. This is a totally fruitless comparison, but whatever, if it'll make you happy.

Oh yeah I definitely agree there. Every time there's a PSP to Wii port, or a Wii to PSP port, they tend to look the same (the developers of Death Jr. had a blog, and they talked about how they had to design the Wii game thinking of the PSP one at the same time).

The only thing I'm saying is that the PSP is not really as powerful as the Wii :)

Possibly, but the PSP has been spec'ed as about the same as a PS2, and the Wii has been spec'ed to a slight advantage over the GC. I'll concede that in raw number crunching they aren't exactly the same. But the potential graphical output of the systems are so close, that render differences negligible. There's no reason to believe that the PSP version will be significantly inferior to the Wii version a la the DS version of Web Of Shadows vs any other console version.

I'm not exactly good at image posting. The graphics are good, but Super Mario Galaxy good? Prime 3 good? Twilight Princess? I beg to differ.

Lazy programmers don't get the most they can out of the system, but with the Wii's userbase constantly increasing, I think that's starting to change.

Oh, and I forgot The Conduit on my list of big Wii games of '09.
