I had a baby last year, so my movie going options were at a minimum. Just got around to watching X-Files now that it's out on dvd.
My expectations were a bit low based on the dodgy reviews i'd read, but overall I thought it was really good! Obviously it wasn't the big roaring comeback that some people were hoping for, but I thought it was a nice, quiet re-introduction to Mulder, Scully & the X-Files.
Kind of a palate cleansing from the 9 years of loose ends so that they can move on to the big stuff again with (hopefully) the next movie.
Was there anyone that genuinely hated it? Because at worst it was just one of their better stand alone horror episodes...

I pretty much agree with what you said about it. I saw it opening weekend and was not let down at all. I thought it made for a great 2 hour episode, despite not being the end all be all movie I wanted.

I dug it.
All the folks who hated this one for being to small are the same people who hated the 1st one for being too big.

X-Files: Gay Psychic Frankenstein was one of the worst movies I saw last year. It was that fucking bad.
How bad? OK, so Scully has left the FBI and is back to the being a doctor again. She's working at a Catholic Pediatric Hospital, trying to cure a terminally ill boy. The head preist doctor is arguing that the boy be moved to a hospice because he has a terminal brain illness that Scully is attempting to cure. She's at a board meeting, and the priest is making his case, and says that unless Scully has a cure, he's moving the boy. Scully exclaims, "BUT I HAVE A CURE- STEM CELLS!"
Cut to a scene of her USING GOOGLE. She types in STEM CELL RESEARCH and just prints up every article she finds.
She doesn't even use quotes! She has no idea how to fucking use Google correctly!
And she's a doctor!
God, what a terrible fucking doctor.

Google's usually my first resort for things over my head. For example, I'm no mechanic, but I replaced my own alternator in my car once without having to resort to a professional mechanic. Granted, my car caught on fire after thirty minutes of driving (the wire to the alternator was touching the hot engine), but hey, for thirty minutes, I felt like an internet McGuyver. I also use google to ferret out obscure points of law in gray-area immigration matters, save myself the trip to a real law library.
Google's magic.

It's not awful.
That said, it's not what I would have wanted or expected from a second X-Files feature film. Some of it worked (the emphasis on the pedophile priest and his gift, would God talk through a pedophile?), some of it didn't (the whole Frankenstein twist was pretty blah).
I suppose I have to confess that my biggest problem was not in this film, but what came before. The series moved these two characters to this place, and I frankly would have preferred to see Mulder and Scully, believer and skeptic, profiler and scientist, FBI agents at their prime. As opposed to what we got..."Hermit Mulder and Doctor Scully Have an Adventure (Now with Added Sex!)"

I'm only halfway finished with the movie, so I guess I've read some spoilers here...like the Pedophile Frankenstein. Should I expect the following: "FIRE BAAAAD. BOY GOOOOOOD."

I dug the movie- it worked on many levels:
*Man vs Man
*Man vs Science
*Science vs Faith
*Faith vs Man
*Scully vs Moulder
*With a heavy dose of "struggling for forgiveness" mirrored among several characters.

Yeah, the writers from the last few seasons botched things up pretty bad. The last couple of seasons especially where all Scully did was cry about her baby, then leave the baby with unarmed friends/relatives for protection. Then she'd be surprised when the baby was kidnapped.
Overall though, I think the new movie positioned X-Files for the future in a way that will allow Mulder/Scully to have more of the old dynamic again - I think the conflicts that come from them dating will be just as interesting as the conflicts from them being FBI Partners

I liked this movie and I hope it does well on dvd, because if it does do well on dvd, frank spotnitz, co-writer of the movie and basically co-runner of the franchise, has stated that they'll be able to do a third movie focusing on the show's mythology and the importance of the year 2012, which gets me excited.

Opening X-Files the weekend after Dark Knight was the biggest boneheaded move of last summer, so here's hoping that putting out the DVD before Christmas will help out some.
I'm think the 2012 movie is the grand finale sendoff that X-Files deserves.

I was disappointed. I wasn't expecting a great film or anything of the sort, but it wasn't even a decent X-Files episode. At times it DID have that old vibe, but then at others (towards the end especially) it was too stretched out, and amazingly dull. I just really didn't care what happened. I think if I saw an episode of this on tv (for free, mind you), my reaction would be, "well, that was blah, not horrible, but not even close to good". So my reaction on paying money to see a lackluster X-Files episode...BLAH!

I haven't watched it yet, but as far as I am concerned, after the first big movie... every line of dialog in the TV series and this film should be:
"Holy fucking shit! Do you remember that giant fucking UFO we were in in Antarctica? That was fucking amazing! I don't know how we will ever be able to talk about any-fucking-thing else for the rest of our lives! We were in a fucking giant UFO with fucking ALIENS in the fucking middle of fucking Antarctica!"
But nooo.... they go back to being oblivious dipshits who never really ponder or reflect upon anything. When did the FBI start recruiting Forrest Gumps? That is what Mulder and Scully are... to functionally retarded Forest Gump characters.

I wish he'd done a little more. I loved how his disgusted "What have you done?" seemed more like a scolding one would give to a young child who's been suspended for cheating on a test rather than what one would say after seeing the horrors he'd just stumbled upon.

I remember as a 12 year old kid even thinking that it was odd that both characters had not gone completely insane by the 3rd season with all the shit and situations they were put in.

Yeah, but they're straight from a type of television where everything was resetted each week (except for the mythology episodes) yeah, itd make sense that Mulder would go "what about the time so and so?" but itd make for awful tv as well, look at any recent episode of Heroes where a character mentions or recaps what's been happening with him, it always sounds like the dumbest thing.

In fairness, Scully was conveniently unconscious for most of those revelations. "Look, Scully...an alien in stasis! Oh, she's passed out." "Look, Scully, a gigantic UFO...oh, she's passed out again."
I'm a huge fan of The X-Files, but that whole mythology fell apart after the film (some would argue it was already spinning off the rails before the film), and the quick and tidy way they transitioned from the film back to Season 6 left a bad taste in my mouth. Still love it, though.

My girlfriend and I watched it a little earlier. It was decent but I was expecting more. My girlfriend didn't like the fact that Mulder and Scully are together (she stopped watching the show after the 7th season so she never even saw the series finale)

It is. It even has key words that are highlighted in the synopsis of the episodes that you can click on and it will list all the episodes that have a similar theme.
Some of the best scenes are in there too (Mulder dancing in front of the mirror in Dreamland, the guy describing Mulder and Scully in Jose Chung's from Outer Space) Unfortunately the clip for Bad Blood isn't of Mulder singing the theme from Shaft. I can't wait to mess with it more. It will take a very long time to go through it.

It did feel like the tv show--at times. But then at others it seems like. as Gordon says below, a "shippers" fanfic wet-dream (i.e. Mulder and Scully in bed together nonchalantly) But it is a hard argument to make, since you want to show that time has passed since the show, but still feel like the good ol' times. A difficult balance to make, no doubt.
As for the end-credits, I enjoyed them, until the hidden row-boat scene. It was great! And then...ruined.

I enjoyed it for what it was. It was a mythology free Creature of the week themed version of X-files. It was like an extended episode and the one glaring strike against it was the fact that so many of the episodes were far superior to this film. It was decent even though I have a natural abhorrence to Billy Connelly. As for the ending shot, my main gripe against it was the fact that they did not zoom in at all. What a waste of Gillian in a bikini!!!! Damn you for that.
