WARNING: SECRET INVASION 8 spoilers ahead...
As you know by now, the "Reunion" in the title refers to Mockingbird & Clint Barton! Now, before you start with the cries of "How in the world is Mockingbird back from the dead, I ask that you just trust me on this one. I have read every appearance, and know the exact moment when the switch took place. In fact, in getting this character to return, I had to present how this could be possible and what would this return give us. And, yes, I can explain how Hawkeye saw "Mockingbird" in hell. No one loves these characters & this couple as much as I do!
ALL will be revealed over the course of this story. The first part hits in 2 short weeks in DARK REIGN: NEW NATION. You'll be seeing interviews with me very soon on this (I believe it is discussed in the iFanboy podcast going live today, where the artist announcement is made.
The mini itself starts in March and is 4 issues. I have been working with Brian to co-ordinate their appearances in New Avengers, so that should flow nicely. The cover will be revealed on Monday and trust me when I say it is AMAZING!
I want to thank Brian SO much for being a huge support in this. He's really helped me with getting this project off the ground and let me talk endlessly as I plotted this out. This honestly wouldn't have happened without him. (he brought her back from the "dead" after all. Also, my editor, Jeanine Schaefer, is incredible and shares the same vision I do for this couple and their future. And the rest of the creative team, who are KILLING on this!
So, feel free to discuss this return, your thoughts on the pair, what you're hoping to see, and come back often as I will be posting links to interviews, previews, and other info as we gear up to this!
UPDATE: I can now tell you all that the artist is none other than David Lopez. His Mockingbird is the most beautiful I have ever seen. Preview art to come in the next few days. David, it is an honor to be working with you!

I have trouble believing there's a way for Mockingbird to be back and reconciling all the times we've seen her dead. But if it also involves Hawkeye being back -- and not being a moron ninja -- I'll buy it.
Remember that scene when she explained to Mr. I how Hawkeye wasn't as good a hand-to-hand fighter? Apparently offing yourself gives you lots of new fighting skills...

Ah, but did you see BOBBI MORSE die? That is the question. Also, re-read WCA 100 VERY closely. And a few other issues prior to that. As for post WCA 100, can you always believe what you see in hell, really? I promise, it will all make sense by the end of the second issue. I am a continuity nerd and MASSIVE West Coast Avengers fan, so I'm addressing it all. I also don't know that there is a bigger Bobbi Morse fan than me (I freaking have Marvel Super Action #1 with her only appearance as Huntress. AND read her appearances in Astonishing Tales with Ka-Zar. LOL)! All I ask is that you have a little faith and wait until you've read it before judging the validity and possibility of her return. We wouldn't have brought her back if I couldn't address and reconcile all of this.
Clint is Clint, regardless of costume. You'll see Clint & Bobbi in this as Clint & Bobbi. And in lots of outfits and fighting styles. AT the end of the day, they are both highly skilled marksmen...women..markspeople. And acrobatics (Clint trained in the carny ciruit and Bobbi at SHIELD). Those can be applied to many different disciplines.
Oh, and welcome to the board, Mott!

Ah, ah, ah, no I was the slick marketer on that one. I didn't say that was my ONLY involvement in sending out that issue. ;) I answered as Jim @ Marvel, the Publicity guy, not Jim McCann the writer of MY FREAKING DREAM GIG! (sorry, giddy today. I disagree it's really Clint when he's running around killing people and being a ninja. Clint's a Robin Hood archetype. But I'm willing to wait and see. Who knows? Maybe this will be the first book with "New Avengers" in the title that I'll buy.
Thanks. (Boy, I'd forgotten when it's like to have a board that sends you an e-mail update when people reply to a thread you've subscribed to.)

As far as I remember, Clint has only killed Skrulls, AFTER they messed with his mind. And trust me, I'm calling him out on that.
Robin Hood was a ninja in the forrest of Nottingham, really. He hid in trees, moved in silence, and had a code of honor. A Ronin does the same (except maybe the tree part). And a bow & arrow are weapons of a Ronin.
Wait and see. :) And thanks for being open to the possibility of me not sucking! ;)

He also in HoM went after Wanda and -- since he apparently didn't know Wolverine had a healing factor (and no adamantium on his spine) fired a killing shot at Wolverine.
But I'm glad to hear you're calling him out on it. This is after all (as you obviously know) a character who left his wife in part because she didn't save her rapist. Didn't kill him, just didn't do anything to save him. Definitely makes me more likely to consider this book.

For the record, I am pro Clint/Ronin. Just throwing that out there. I also got to say that if she felt that their get-together was anything but a one-time deal, then I feel sorry for Echo. I hope she lands on her feet somewhere in the Marvel U. I like her.
I don't know item one about Bobbi Morse, as I didn't read Avengers during her stint, but I may get this anyway.
Oh, and I get the feeling that the artist is someone who has worked on ASM because this isn't the first time you've dropped an "AMAZING" on us, Jim.

1) I'd like to deal with Echo, but don't know if I will get to in these issues. They are more about Clint/Bobbi.
2) The thing that I have been challenged to do is help make sure people like you (and that's a LOT of today's readership) who have never read anything with Mockingbird in it, gets her and their relationship without having to read 100+ back issues she appeared from 1971-1993
3 - No, I just really like the word amazing. I have to use the thesaurus a LOT when writing... While those guys on ASM are indeed AMAZING, I'd claw your eyes out if you found anything bad about the artist on this project!

I thought I would hate that show, but it's rather good. My favorite quote in quite a while:
"I'm sorry but I'm not going to watch 'The Clone Wars' TV series until I've seen 'The Clone Wars' movie. I'd prefer George Lucas disappoint me in the order he intended."
Anyway, There's no way I would of put 2 and 2 together until that teaser came out. If I saw the teaser in conjunction with the twitter page, maybe I would of had it figured out.

If Mockingbird and Hawkeye aren't spending "R&R" in the pages of NA or Reunion and instead are just out smelling the roses, I'll be kind of surprised.
Seriously, after everything Clint has been through and now he finally gets a piece of a happier part of his life back, I can only imagine he's going to be spending the next few months turning her pelvis into a crater.

Looking forward to seeing how Mockingbird will be overhauled, some interesting aspects in her traditional outfits but much room for improvement.
(put down the pitchforks and embrace change. It looks AWESOME and fits the story and her new status quo)
No pitchfork here, Jim. :)

To post the image, right click on the image, go to properties, highlight the address (categorized as "location"), copy and paste address to the "insert image" button to post it.
That should do it.
ALSO, that cover is quite beautiful.
Yeah, for some reason, that is not working for me. Is it because I am on a Mac? Grumble.

Beautiful cover by Chen there. Can't wait to see the rest of the covers.
And this book is definitely on my reading list. I've always been a big fan of Hawkeye and Mockingbird, which is weird, because I never read that many comics with her in it. Guess that shows how much of an impression she made then

I'm actually really interested to see how she's coming back after that, since it was quite clearly revealed to have been Bobbi both there and in the volume 3 issue of Avengers by Busiek and Perez where the dead teammates came back thanks to Grim Reaper.

What was it Jim said?
"How can you really trust everything you see in Hell?"
I'm inclined to agree with him.
It's a place conceived with a large purpose invested in punishing and torturing people.

All three of us (myself, David, and super-editor Jeanine Shaefer) felt she needed an updated look. She is not the same as she was before she was taken. She has a new attitude, and a new mission. This costume reflects that.
And in an AWESOME way!!!!!!

There's a flavor of the mask, but that mask made no sense in what she has to do now that she is back. It's a story point. You'll see.

So glad you guys like the preview pages! And a No Prize to the first person who correctly ID's the homage in the last panel of page 2.
As for the price. I can't set it, it's not my call to make it $3.99 (which most of Marvel's minis, including this one have been). But what I CAN promise you is that I am aware of the increased price tage and am making DAMN sure that you guys get your extra $1/month's worth, jam packing as much action, emotion, and reading into a comic as possible. You won't be able to read these in 2-3 minutes. I will not do that to you if you are being asked to pay $3.99.

No worries, Jim. I know the hands of the creative talent (hey, you're the creative talent now!) are tied when it comes to pricing. I asked because, as a DCBS customer, I like to plan ahead.
I can tell you this right now, Jim - I've really liked what I've read and what I've seen about this project so far and as long as I have room in my monthly comics budget (I'll know for sure when the March solicits hit, but all signs point to "yes") I will definitely be adding this book to my order. Even though I hardly know anything about Mockingbird, you've already sold me on this.

Just wanted to say that I am really excited for this, and really glad that Jim is obviously as huge a fan of Bobbi and Clint as I am! I remember reading the Lost in Space Time saga when I was about 10...my eyes were probably the size of dinner plates when Bobbi said "Drop dead." Awesome!
One question though...is there a reason that she is being referred to as Bobbi Morse and not Bobbi Barton? Did she drop Clint's last name during their separation...I didn't think they ever officially got divorced though?
Oh, and...
"And a No Prize to the first person who correctly ID's the homage in the last panel of page 2."
The only thing I can come up with is at the end of WCA #5 or #6, when Mockingbird pins the Balkatar in the Cat Dimension. But that seems way too obscure...

Interesting bit about the SUSPICION episode, especially the 'fight' in the beginning. Apparently either Clint wasn't trying or his newly focused upon martial arts skills are going to be dampened a bit in Bobbi's presence. In the old days their tandem act was definitely Hawkeye from long range and Mockingbird close up.
Mockingbird once claimed to be able to 'sling a boot with Captain America', which would make her a world class martial artist. Clint as Ronin was applauded by none other than the Iron Fist, making him nothing to joke about.
What now? Doesn't one of them have to give?

The fight was just them sparring, practicing like they used to (remember the good old days of Avengers sparring to stay sharp?), not an actual fight. You WILL see them together in fine form in the mini, fighting. Lots of fighting.

I guess the question is: will they be fighting each other? Heh heh.
On a side note, are we ever going to find out when she was captured by Skrulls.
My guess for a good retcon would be during the 'Visionquest' mini back in Avengers West Coast. (awesome John Byrne run on that, still a great comic today) She had disappeared for a while and then boom, shows up again helping to capture Vision and have him taken apart? Seemed fishy...even then.
Weird thing is, her flashbacks to West Coast Avengers showed Iron Man in his old scarlet centurion armor with the silver and red. If that was the last team she remembers, she was taken a long time ago.

Have they ever NOT fought each other? It's part of what makes them THEM.
And yes, we will learn when they took her.

Hey Jim, just wanted to say that I really enjoyed the prologue...I was an easy sell but I'm hooked anyway!
I'd love it if Bobbi was taken before Visionquest, because I really thought that the entire story line was a real character assassination. Mockingbird was a secret agent, and she gets fooled that easily into giving away the Avengers passcodes? Come on. But I don't think that she was taken that early, Jim said that it was in the final issues of the West Coast run, and I think that he said it was between issues. Maybe after Ultron copies her brain patterns for Alkhema and leaves her in his lab they pulled the switch?

I agree, it never made sense. But you have to admit, the art was right on. That scene where she comes sauntering back in through the door and Hawkeye goes berserk is one of my favorite panels ever. I'm looking forward to some more Clint and Bobbi moments to come...

The covers are gorgeous but I'm not quite sure where I stand on the first impression of the new costume (of what we're seeing).
Seems like somethings missing, maybe it's that element Jim is talking about or I may just be used to seeing her with a bigger mask.
I don't know about the mask either...looks too much like a pair of shades. Maybe I'm just too used to her old look, but I just think that portion of her costume needs a little more "umph." And if nothing is done, I feel like some new element needs to be introduced to her head to give it more visual interest. I hope that's where the unseen element will be added. Maybe a hood kinda like Rogue's? I think that would look nice. Everything else looks good though.

Hey Jim-
I'm really looking forward to this mini and I think it's awesome that you have such enthusiasm for Mockingbird and her and Clint's relationship, though I don't understand why she needed a new costume.
One of the reasons that I wanted her back in comics is due to the fact that I used to think her costume fits perfectly with today's fashions since it's so era-definitive( ie: late 70's & 80's inspired ). She actually looks like a really fashionable, hot chick today, which can't be said about most female heroes in comics. Often they are portrayed either wearing low-rise flared jeans or some frumpy sweater or boring tank-top, rather than anything that reflects an eye for fashion.
Plus her costume was classic. Especially the billowy sleeves, plunging neck-line and mask. This new costume looks like it was designed by the same person who did Hank Pym...err Wasp's new look.
If this costume is the new status quo for Mockingbird, I'll likely skip her future appearances as I have with several other "revamped" characters. This almost seems like she's being sold as a new character.

Well ,I really hope you reconsider, Dylan. The new costume is inspired by all aspects of the character, from SHIELD, to The Huntress, to the original (long-pant) costume she had (there is still a plunging neckline, btw, as well as the black & white color scheme). This reflects that I'm rolling all aspects of her history as well as the things she's gone thru since we saw her last into the person she is now. The one-piece bathing suit with long sleeves is impractical for her new mission. I don't think this is "revamped" as much as it is a growth of the character that is keeping within her history as well as moving her forward, like we have to with all characters. If she came off the ship and was the exact same person we saw 15 years ago, that would be honestly rather boring and unbelievable. She has to have changed. She is, indeed, a "new" character in a sense, much like Bucky becoming Winter Soldier is a "new" character. Also, to many people they don't know her at all, so I have a very fine line to walk by introducing her to today's audience while making her fresh and exciting for existing fans of the series.
Trust me when I say that David Lopez, Jeanine Schaefer, and myself when through all of her looks and came up with a hybrid of her pervious looks as well as making her a hero for today. And it's quite fashionable for today's look, rather than for the 70s look. There are still more parts of the costume to be shown (including something involving sleeves), so all I ask is that you not judge a character by their costume (much like book/cover and all), and rather by the person in the costume. And, if a costume is the most important thing, keep in mind that you haven't seen it all yet.
Hope that helps sooth any fears you may have until the actual issue comes out & you see Bobbi (new costume & all) in action.
Dylan

Thanks for the response Jim, I appreciate it!
It's good to know that this character (and the greatest Marvel couple) is being handled by someone who's really invested in them.
While I understand the need to revamp her costume for a specific mission, I felt her outfit was pretty amazing. Some of that era's costume fashions look great in the current Marvel landscape, Taskmaster and Spider-Woman are prefect examples.
Kind of an off question (I asked in the "Ask Slott" thread), but will Mockingbird tangle with the Night Shift at any point? Were/Are there any plans to if not? They were such an interesting group and since Mock started a rift between the Avengers and them, I figured you'd be the guy to ask!
Dr. Hackenbush

I haven't even seen the whole costume but it's starting to grow on me. Although I like the classic look purely on a visual level, my first thought on the original costume was about its impracticality. I realize that a lot of superhero garb enters the realm of impracticality but, considering Bobbi's field of expertise, it seems particularly excessive in her case. Of course, my affinity to the new look may be tied, in part, to the excellent 50/50 cover by Jo Chen.
On the topic of the new look, Jim, I wanted to ask if there's anything special about those shades that Bobbi is wearing. For whatever reason, when I first saw the new cover I had the feeling that there had to be some additional use for those glasses besides just being part of her new get-up. I just assumed that a switch from a mask to glasses is not so much form as it is function.

Of course, Dylan! Thanks for asking!! And, yes, I fully feel this is the greatest couple the Marvel U has, so I am very invested in them.
As for Night Shift, I would love to use a LOT of characters from their past (there's still unfinished Julia Carpenter issues, Tigra/Moon Knight leaving WCA with Bobbi, Crossfire, just to name a few), but in these 4 issues, they are dealimg with an external enemy on the surface and their internal issues individually and as a couple, so it leaves little room for others. If I get more issues (on-going, please, comic book gods?), I would love to revisit some past adversaries!

Great cover! I definitely love the new costume. I'll be honest, I'm not the biggest fan of the unitard/ panties look for female superheroes 99% of the time. It just looks moronic more often than not. So I definitely approve of the new look.

Is that a good thing or a bad thing?
It's certainly a good thing. Anyone on the fence about the series will have one more reason to give your book a try if the first issue will only cost them a buck AND, since there's a 2 book limit, people who are enamored with both Jo Chen covers don't have to choose. They can afford to get both.:)
I read the prologue to this series in New Nation last night. I thought, along with Agents of Atlas, that it was easily the most compelling of the stories in that book. What I was a bit surprised at was the emotionally intense tone of the story. I guess after reading the first two pages when they were offered as a preview I expected more playful verbal jousting throughout the story. Instead, what I got was the beginning to a compelling mystery and a lot of gut-twisting emotion. I liked it, I just wasn't expecting so much of it in an eight-page prologue.
Nice job, Jim. This really makes me look forward to the main story.

And thanks, Doc! This is definitely an emotionally intense story. Just outlined issue 2 and even though *I* knew what was coming in the isssue, it was difficult to write because we get to see both sides of what they went through and what they are going through. I consider myself a pretty solid Avengers fan, BUT I will admit here and now that I don't know a whole lot about Mockingbird. I have the first Hawkeye mini, the WCA issue with Phantom Rider, I have other random issues of WCA, and I have read issue #100 (which never sat right with me even then). What are some key issues that will help me know how she works? Where did she get married to Hawkeye? Anything in Avengers Spotlight?
Any chance of Mockingbird meeting up with the Phantom Rider's descendant on the Secret Warriors team? That would make for an uncomfortable team up on Mockingbird's part.

The first mini is where she met & married Hawkeye. To get a feel of the character, I'd look at Marvel Team-Up 95 (check out Gruney's note in the letters page for that issue) and the Hawkeye mini (those appearances along with MTU 95 are almost The Bible for this character), some early Solo Avengers issues, the first 37 or so issues of WCA (not that you need ALL of them, but check out the whole Phantom Rider saga), and some of the last 15 issues of WCA she was in. I'm trying to make this mini a good entry for ANYONE, though, while still being true to the character's roots.
She already met Phantom Rider's descendent. WCA 37 (completely guessing on the number)? Of course, it was a different descendent than the one in Secret Warriors...
Yeah, this one is different. And if I get more than 4 issues, I would LOVE to get to show her meeting up with the Secret Warriors...and many other Marvel U characters.
Side note, just got the last pages of issue 1 in today. Ah-Maze-Ing! Old school & new fans alike will REJOICE on the last page. David Lopez is blowing me away. Now to issue 2...

That was just the comic book equivalent of special effects, right? It's just being shown to "reflect upon" (pun intended) the time she spent as a captive of the skrulls, yes?

Yes, visual metaphor. If you notice on the first page, panel 2, it is a reflection of Bobbi in her SHIELD uniform with an older car. Pg 1 panel 3 has her reflection in her old Mockingbird costume. They echo what she's thinking about. Same with the Skrull reflection- as she thinks about the Skrull that replaced her, that is what's going thru her head. David & I used reflective surfaces in the opening sequence to visually tell backstory while also using narration.
Feel free to spread the word as I have seen some debate on this. Bobbi Morse is not, I categorically repeat, is NOT a Skrull. She is back among the living here on Earth. Explinations to be given throughout the 4 issues about the years that have happened since and just before she was taken.
And thanks! Hope you like the rest!

I figured as much. I didn't notice the first reflective flashback but I see it now.
I will make sure to tell anyone under the impression that she's still a Skrull that she is most definitely not. Apparently, even with the glut of post-SI interviews clearly stating that she's back and not a Skrull, there are still those that are uninformed.
You even put it right there in the solicit for #1:
"In the wake of SECRET INVASION, Mockingbird is alive and has returned to Earth after being held captive by the Skrulls."
Go figure.
Hey, by the way, nice nod to the Hitchcock movie in the issue title.:thumb: That's one dead movie genre that I always enjoyed - the train murder mystery.
The Lady Vanishes, The Narrow Margin, Terror By Night, and (much later) Silver Streak are all great train movies.

Yeah, I tried to be pretty clear, and the last thing we want is to go "A-ha! Fooled you YET AGAIN! She IS a Skrull!" *I* would throw a tomato at myself for that.
As for the Hitchcock ref, there are a number of them (and other film noir references) in the whole mini. Each issue title is a Film Noir or espionage film title.
And I LOVE train mystery flicks. I'll have to check out some of those you mentioned! While not entirely on a train at all, STRANGERS ON A TRAIN is amazing as well!

Cool. That will have to hold me over until the end of March comes around. My DCBS shipments show up at the end of the month so I'll be reading this series almost a month behind everyone else. (if the book continues to be scheduled for the beginning of the month)

Aw, Doc, that stinks that you'll be behind. You'll probably want to stay off the spoiler part of the board then, which sucks because I like seeing you on the board! The book will continue to come out the first week. But I understand DCBS shipping and am very grateful that you added the book to your order.

Will Mockingbird be keeping her classic uniform in New Avengers until the conclusion of your miniseries or will the change occur earlier?

The mini takes place over a matter of about 48 hours, so the new costume- and their new status quo- will take effect after the mini has wrapped when Brian can start reflecting it in New Avengers.

Sounds good.
Lets just hope it happens before it turns into some weird recurring gag like New Avengers' artists refusal to draw Iron Fist's new updated costume.
Looking forward to the issue, I've been very picky about trying new things out but the IGN preview has got me interested (your writing and artist makes me feel pretty confident about giving it a shot), I want to know more about Mockingbird, a character I don't know all that much about to begin with aswell.

Just skimmed the reviews, and things are definitely looking good Jim. Congrats.
I have to say though, some reviewers make me laugh.
And McCann really stumbles with a "Grey's Anatomy" reference. Not only isn't it funny at all, it doesn't make any sense for Clint Barton to refer to a show like that since he, too, was far from its target audience as well. He was dead and out of the country for years, remember, so he should be out of the pop culture loop almost as much as Bobbi Morse is.
Clint was "dead" a total of 2 years real time. In Marvel time, it's closer to 7 since it was 6 months between Avengers and New, and the start of New and HoM. And when he got back, he was out of the country a month or so. PLENTY of time for him to have watched a show that's been around for years.
How hard is it for reviewers to remember that comic time doesn't equal real time?

Yeah that nit pick kills me because they miss the point of that reference. It's not that Clint is a FAN of the show, I was commenting that you couldn't get away from that show when it first came out, whether you watched it or not. It was part of the social consciousness, yet Bobbi has no idea what it is...because she was GONE. Another way to show she's out of sync with everyone.
Plus it was in a very appropriate setting for that comment I thought. LOL.. But if it is minor things like that, I'm ok with those! That review had some very flattering things to say, so yay.

This issue was awesome and totally covers some ground that there wasn't time to get to in Secret Invasion itself. I guess Mockingbird spent the most time in Skrull hands out of any of the heroes. Pretty exciting stuff.
I wonder if Mockingbird will someday "get the band back together" with Moon Knight, Tigra, Wonder Man, Dr. Pym, and the others from the West Coast days? Hope so!
