So as many of you know I'm a waiter in a popular steakhouse here in Boston. When I went in to work I expected it to be the regular assortment of rich housewives and business men flinging corporate cards entertaining clients. Oh how I was wrong.

So the doors to the joint open and the first table comes in, foreign tourists. I beg the restaurant gods not to put them in my section (only reason is because culturally tipping is about 10% everywhere else and here in the US it's 20%). They went to another station. Whew. 3 minutes later 2 elderly ladies covered in jewels stroll through the thresh hold. They go to another station. BUT, the 3rd pair that come in for lunch made me rub my eyes and do a double take. Is that who I think it is? Sonovabitch it is... Jeph Loeb!

First thing I think is, that can't be him. Why would he be in Boston? then I remember that Marvel selected Stamford Connecticut to open Civil War because it was his hometown. That has to be him! I figured there can only be one way to find out... go up and ask him.

I let a little time go by so he could settle in. He was sitting with a stoic older gentleman with silver hair. They began to speak friendly with one another so I figure it's not business related but rather a casual encounter.

I stroll up to the table and politely apologize for interrupting. I ask the Loeb-esque man if the name John Suintress means anything to him (I figure this would be an obvious tell sign because Loeb does his Loeb report podcast via Word Balloon). he was caught off guard for a milla second but immediately smiled, extended his hand and said, "Yes. How do you know John?". I said that I do not know John personally but I am an avid podcast listener.

The older gentleman was baffled. With a puzzled look the elder statesman asked, "How would you recognize Jeph? Comic creators don't get the public recognition." I winked at him and proudly replied, "Sir, I am a geek. We know our own kind."

Mr. Loeb and I exchanged pleasantries for about 5 minutes (including the fact that we do get a bunch of celebrities in the restaurant and yet after years of this he was the first one I went out of my way to introduce myself :) ). He was very kind and cordial and I honestly think he truly appreciated the recognition. After that I told him to enjoy his afternoon and walked away.

I love being a comic geek. Today was a good day. ;)

PS. In case you were wondering... His waiter told me, Loeb is a good tipper.
