View Full Version : Why is Ultimate Spider-Man Vol. 10 OHC so expensive?

It's solicited at $39.99.

I understood the price increase for Vol. 9, as it contained 15 issues (two of which had 10 extra pages of story), but, according to the solicit, Vol. 10 only contains 10 issues.

And it doesn't appear to be general inflation for Oversized Hardcovers, as the Mighty Avengers OHC being released the same month (containing 11 issues) is only $34.99. That's still five bucks more than usual for that size OHC, but it's five bucks less than the Ultimate Spider-Man OHC (and with 32 pages more content).

Thinking about it, I've never really understood the economics of the OHCs in general, to be honest. It always seemed strange (though I certainly appreciated it) that the nicest format tended to have a lower price-per-issue than any other format. That said, it'll be disappointing if that's no longer going to be the case.

That can't be right. The TPBs are about 200 pages long. What's on the other 300 pages?

Jeez, is that stuff really appropriate for an OHC? Couldn't they have stuck New Avengers #21-25, CIVIL WAR: THE INITIATIVE and CIVIL WAR: THE CONFESSION in there instead?

Course. I totally agree. But it's a smart way for Marvel to charge more and not be entirely unreasonable in doing so.

Marvel knows they can get it. Personally I'm suprised they didn't raise the price sooner.

USM is probably one of the highest selling OHC series. People who already own the previous 9 volumes won't pass on volume 10 just because they are getting fucked over.

I think Marvel wants to get as much as they can for books they have every reason to believe will sell before people won't pay the high prices anymore. As Taxman says, the crunch is coming.

Yea, Marvel seems to have abandoned the 'fan loyalty' angle.

If publishers (and creators) want fans to be loyal and sacrifice, to keep buying titles monthly even though they may not want the floppies anymore, Marvel has to meet their customers half way. If Marvel isn't willing to lower it's prices and cut down on it's profit margin why would fans be willing to buy titles soley to support Marvel and it's creators?

Every man for himself I guess. If Marvel continues to struggle because fans drop more and more titles every month they have noone to blame but themselves.

It's an annoying increase, but with online discounts it's still cheaper than the combined price of the issues it contains, so I imagine I'll pay out.

I was a little disturbed at the price especially considering the number of issues included in it. But with the discounts it still does end up being cheaper than the floppies.

Those are going in the NEW AVENGERS VOL. 3 oversized HC. I rather like the CIVIL WAR HC with all the extras and scripts relating directly to the main series.

really? huh. I thought they'd do a big Civil War OHC then a Leinil Yu Avengers OHC and then two Secret Invasion OHCs (one with the main series, the other with the NA and MA tie-in issues)

I haven't read any of the issues from Vol. 10. I used to buy monthly, dropped it just afterthe clone saga. So this would be my first HC volume bought blind. Havent even seen any spoilers. Now I'm not sure if I want to continue based on price. Canadian dollar sucks again and it screwed up my discount.

Scale of 1-10, how does story stack up to the previous 9 HC?

If anything, USM is consistent. Just as good as what came before.

This material is terrific. Start of the stuff with the very gorgeous work of Stuart Immonen. Now I'm concerned about readers giving up on it now they've got Bagley's run wrapped up.

That would be a damn shame because the book is just as awesome as ever.

What issues does this baby cover?

I assume it's something like 112 - 122, which is the material covered by the first two Immonen trades. However, the solicit only says 112-121, but I suspect it's a typo.

NOT IF YOU GET THE FLOPPIES AT THE SAME DISCOUNTED PRICE !!!!!!!!! dcbs (40%) for example. i dont get the reasoning for backing this up.

I live in England, there aren't many people willing to sell me floppies at those kind of discounts. (And if there are and I just don't know about them, feel free to correct me.)

But Amazon do let me have a very nice percentage off trades.

for those us ing dcbs or american based sites- it makes no sense to say discounted HC vol.10 is still cheaper than floppies when dcbs sells floppies at same discount !

Now if Breevort comes here and tell us there is 15 pages of bonuses/extras ! Im good to go with a smile. But last year he told me on his blog:
