Thought I'd start a thread showing you some of the work I've been doing...

A page from Thor, Man of War (so many of this book's pages reveal an important element to the story that this one'll have to do-- after the book's out, I'll post a couple more Man of War pages)

Sure, a lot of the Thor sequentials are spread across two pages but here are pages 17 and 18 from Terror Inc. 1. When not working on fantasy, I'm a big fan or noir and horror stories:

Hey Patch, this may sound like a foolish question, but have you been going for a Kirby-vibe with your Thor work? I have seen it a few times in passing, but I really saw it in the panel you posted.

Not a foolish question. Yeah, I'm thinking of Kirby a bit. He idealized a lot of these characters. Kirby's Odin and Thor, in the way their stanced, the broadness of their features and limbs, are a delight. That said, I'm still trying to approach the Thor work in a way that's mine and that's modern.

if you don't mind my asking, what are you using to get the different tones on the pages?
I did about half the greys with a paper smudge in Terror Inc. 1 but found I could do more in photoshop. So now I've got a file of gradiated shapes, tones, and objects that I use as bases. I've used pics of eggs to help shade helmets. Sometimes I take pics of myself to use as a base. But, I'm up in the air about continuing the greys-- they're very time consuming.

Yeah, I do. It actually aids the colorist. My colorist, June Chung, a terrific talent, says, with capital letters, that she LOVES coloring the work.

Yeah, I was asking because Boatwright did the same in the Edgar Allan Poo book and it helped the colorist he got onboard halfway into the book keep the same style because the guy didn't have to think about tones and shadows. Apparently speeds up the process for the colorist a lot, too. Hope you can continue doing it.

How cool would it be to get a b/w collection of these books sometime down the line?

Doing some Trek research, I saw some older stuff of yours. It's obvious your style has not only changed, but you've really tapped into what makes your work strong. So I'm curious, was it a slow evolution, or do you feel there were any significant points were you had a realization or a "clicking" that made you leap ahead?

Arranged a sheet across pillows to get some idea for the cape folds. I like the small stress lines in cloth that move contrary to the flow (above and left of the large shadow on the cape) that aren't generally noticed when capes are drawn.
The sword is just scratches and squiggles to simulate high detail.
Everything's drawn except the 'flaming energy stairway' which I didn't want to do as cartoonish 'licky' flames. For that I photographed a stairway then futzed with distortions, inverses, and filters till I had something I liked.
Futzing is becoming a skill unto itself.

Doing some Trek research, I saw some older stuff of yours. It's obvious your style has not only changed, but you've really tapped into what makes your work strong. So I'm curious, was it a slow evolution, or do you feel there were any significant points were you had a realization or a "clicking" that made you leap ahead?

Both. It's like that Faces song, "I wish that I knew what I know now, when I was younger". As I've matured (hah) in general, so has the art-- but it also comes in leaps.
Inking my own work was a leap. I've never been comfortable noodling with a pencil extensively. It seemed that when I did do that, some of the pencil was always lost-- and when I didn't, no one picked up the slack.
I can see things more concretely as my own inker-- and make changes to the pencils that finesse and build on them.

Thet thar's some purdy Thor, mister.
Thanks, NW.

While I love how this looks, I'm wondering how it's possible for so many fighters to group around this tightly and have this amount of weapons in the shot. Greek phalanxes were highly packed with spears already and there was much less density even though they were three rows deep. :)

The sheer number of weapons contrasted with his peaceful pose is the key to the composition.

Not really. I was drawing about 13 or 14 issues a year but, instead of putting a few in the bag, some of the issues shipped 3 weeks apart.

I can't come anywhere near that speed with the current work.

Yeah, I agree, just bullshitting around.

I think the way this shot could work is if the camera was on the ground, these guys were pointing their weapons toward the sky, and IF was levitating above them, facing the ground.

Frank Miller and Walt Simonson come to mind when you describe your composition. That may have worked very well.

I wanted the passive 'lotus' position and having IF levitate would appear as a 'superpower' from that position. A composition like that is also problematic because of how 'high' or near to the logo the main figure is placed if he's above the weapons. He has to remain below the logo.

Oh no, I came up with a possible explanation how the cover you drew could be "realistically" interpreted, not suggesting what it should look like.

June Chung is awesome. She also colored Jae Lee's art on a six-issue Transformers/G.I. Joe series (2003/2004) written by John Ney Rieber. It's interesting to compare the original issues (in color) to the Pocket Book edition (http://www.amazon.de/Transformers-G-I-Joe-Pocket-Book/dp/1897105037/) (in pre-color form) to see what June Chung adds to the artwork.

Jog wrote about it (http://joglikescomics.blogspot.com/2006/01/in-living-color-or-its-absence.html) back when the collection was published. Unfortunately the art links no longer work.

Reminds me of some of the more serious fantasy stuff I've read, like the old Claremont/Bolton Black Dragon, or Charles Vess and John Ridgeway's awesome Prince Valiant mini. Both Marvel projects, but lesser known for sure.

I re-read the Prince Valiant mini just a few weeks back and it's fantastic. Very surprisingly dark, beginning as it did with the death of Arthur and the fall of Camelot, then following the ensuing chaos.

Anyway, great looking stuff you've got. I'm excited to hear more.

GOD-DAMN.

The art is wonderful, but... I doubt Ares could sustain his own monthly title. Unless Marvel has made recent major changes to the character, he's never been much more than a power-mad thug -- not exactly prime material for a protagonist... not even much of an anti-hero...

An unlikable protagonist can be interesting in small doses, but monthly...

Anyway, I look forward to tracking down some of Patrick's newer work at Wizard Chicago (no comics shops around here).

He's been reduced to little more than a thug recently but did you read Oemings Ares mini?

Ares as a loving Father, trying to escape his past so that his son could have a quality of life Ares didn't have. Working construction jobs and living in obscurity. That Ares could hold a monthly title I think. There is alot more that can be done with the character than what Benids is currently doing.
